Story
This puppy has just arrived! They have come to us on transport from a shelter partner, were found as stray, or surrendered to our care by an owner. Puppies require a significant amount of structure, routine, time, patience, and training to learn how to behave properly in a home. The first few months of having a puppy is a critical time to establish boundaries and help your puppy understand what they can expect from you and what you expect from them. Remember, puppies aren’t born knowing how to live in a human’s world, it is up to you to teach them how to make good decisions in a positive and caring manner. The more positive interactions they have in their first year of life will set them up for better behavior in the future. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.

Story
ABOUT FENRIS Calling all spicy Chihuahua lovers, meet the sassiest little man around! Fenris is a 4-year-old Chihuahua with some very big feelings (and even bigger opinions). He came to HAP when his owner could no longer keep him, and let’s just say… he is not impressed with shelter life. Fenris is clearly accustomed to the finer things, his ideal day includes wearing a cozy sweater and being carried around like the king he knows he is. While he can be nervous when meeting new people, he’s excellent at communicating when he needs space (boundaries? we love to see it). With time, patience, and a steady supply of tasty snacks, he warms up and transforms into a full-on stage ten clinger. We’ve seen glimpses of Fenris’s loving and playful side, and he’s looking for an adopter who will give him the time, respect, and understanding he needs to truly shine! **Fenris thinks other dogs are dirty and weird, so he is looking to be your only pet, non-negotiable. He also thinks children are loud and annoying, so calm adults are preferred for this king! If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. Please read the bio in full for answers to common questions. If you have a question not covered here, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/. Because all of our dogs live in foster homes, meet-and-greets are scheduled only after a completed application is received. Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance of Wilmington, DE so our volunteers can conduct an in-person home visit. Meet Hilo (HE-low) Hilo is a 13-year-old, 27-lb Chihuahua/Beagle mix looking for a calm home to spend his golden years. Don’t let his age fool you — this little guy still loves life, especially walks, toys, treats, and car rides. Hilo is fully housebroken, walks nicely on leash, and is a classic couch-potato companion who enjoys relaxing nearby. He likes to stay close to his person and will happily follow you from room to room like a loyal shadow, but he’s not overly clingy and prefers lounging beside you rather than being a lap dog. One of Hilo’s cutest habits is getting excited for walks — he’ll actually try to grab his jacket out of your hand because he can’t wait to go outside. He does well with other dogs, has minimal barking, and would do best with older kids due to his age. Hilo would thrive in a home with someone who is retired or works from home, where he can enjoy companionship, daily walks, and plenty of cozy nap spots. Hilo came to rescue as an owner surrender and was a bit overweight at intake, but he’s been doing great in foster care. As a precaution, he eats kidney-support food and takes a few routine supplements to keep him feeling his best. (Nexguard Plus | 3 month supply: $123.79, Wellactin supplement | 120 capsules: $24.99) His favorite things include toys, food, treats, walks, and car rides. Loud noises and storms aren’t his favorite, but a warm spot near the fireplace and a comfy bed make everything better. If you’re looking for a sweet, loyal companion who just wants to be near his people, Hilo may be the perfect match.
