They realize that Gizmo isn’t just a dog who likes to play; he’s a dog who needs to play to be his happiest self. Gizmo hasn't had a lot of practice making new friends due to his owner's health, but he just needs a little warming up and patience. Gizmo isn't looking for a house he's looking for a home.
