Story
Meet Rags – small in size, but big in personality! This spirited little guy was rescued from a high-kill shelter and is now on the lookout for an active family that can keep up with his energy and give him plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Rags is a loving and playful companion with his favorite people, and he absolutely thrives on affection and attention – he’ll even jump up for some extra love! Rags is an incredibly smart and eager learner, but he does require an experienced owner who can continue his training and help manage his resource guarding tendencies. Due to this, Rags would do best in an adult-only home where his family can work closely with our trainers to ensure a smooth transition into his forever home. While Rags generally gets along with dogs, his guarding behavior can make him unpredictable around other animals, so he would be happiest as the only pet in the household. This little guy is a big fan of long walks on sunny days and running around in the yard. He’s treat-motivated and loves learning new tricks with a clicker. If you’re an experienced dog owner who can offer Rags the structure and care he needs, you’ll be rewarded with an incredibly loyal and loving companion!

Story
Phantom first came into the shelter years ago as a stray. He was eventually adopted, but somewhere along the way, he ended up discarded again. Animal control received a call about a dog left sitting outside in a kennel. That dog was Phantom. He weighed only 12 pounds. Every rib, every hip bone, every vertebra visible beneath his skin. Starved. Weak. Forgotten. Yet somehow, despite everything humans had done to him, Phantom still loved people. Even on the brink of death, his tail still wiggled. Today, Phantom is thriving and ready to find the family he always deserved. He is a snack-sized little guy who fits perfectly in your lap and quickly makes himself at home wherever he goes. He LOVES food, loves cuddles, and gets the wiggliest butt when he's getting attention or kisses. His favorite thing in the world is simply being near his people. Phantom does well in a home environment, enjoys lounging nearby, and is happiest soaking up love and snacks like he's making up for lost time Spayed/neutered: yes Good with adults: yes Good with kids: yes Good with other dogs: yes Good with cats: TBD House trained: yes Crate trained: yes, but will bark when hungry/go out to potty Energy level: medium Can be handled/touched: yes Barker: occasionally Flight risk: no; however, all dogs should be considered flight risks in new environments Food aggressive: no Walks on leash: yes Leash reactive to people or dogs: no Rides well in car: yes Destructive: no Needs a home with a yard: no, but does enjoy one! Story
Meet Charlotte   • Name: Charlotte • Age: 7–8 years • Sex: Spayed Female • Breed: Terrier Mix • Color: Brown • Weight: 9.5 kg • Height (shoulder): 37 cm   Rescue Story Charlotte was rescued from a municipal shelter in January 2021. After her rescue, she spent about four years in a private shelter. During her time at the shelter, Charlotte was bitten by another dog. Following that experience, she became very sensitive to handling and touch, which made finding an adoptive home more challenging.   In November, Charlotte joined the AKR center, where she began desensitization and touch training. At first, even putting on a collar or harness caused her to scream, but with consistent training and patience, she has made meaningful progress. Now, she may occasionally whine slightly, but her reaction has improved significantly.   She is sensitive to her fur being pulled, so she is currently kept with a short coat for her comfort.   ‍‍‍ Socialization with People Charlotte can be a little shy at first, but she is very food-motivated. With treats and gentle, positive reinforcement, she warms up quickly and becomes comfortable with touch.   She has not been tested with children under 13. While she can be picked up once she trusts you, this may be difficult for strangers at first. As she bonds, she becomes affectionate—even offering her belly for rubs.   Socialization with Dogs Charlotte is friendly and social with other dogs. She approaches both familiar and unfamiliar dogs to greet and invite play.   She can be a bit vocal when playing, which may overwhelm more timid dogs. However, she does very well with dogs that match her energy level, regardless of size.   She would thrive either with a compatible canine companion or as the only dog in the home.   Cats Not yet tested, but can be assessed upon request.   Energy Level Moderate energy. She enjoys outdoor activities but settles down calmly afterward.   Walks Charlotte may look around curiously during walks, but she follows her handler well and does not pull on the leash.   Other Notes • No resource guarding toward people or dogs • No separation anxiety—she stays home alone well • May bark at other dogs, but does not bark excessively at people • Calm and quiet in a kennel • Nervous about getting into the car—may need to be gently carried in (a crate is recommended initially) • Currently uses outdoor potty   Ideal Home Charlotte is looking for a patient and understanding home that will continue her positive reinforcement training and respect her sensitivity to touch. With time, consistency, and kindness, she truly blossoms into a loving and affectionate companion.   If you’re looking for a sweet, resilient dog and are willing to give her the time she needs to fully trust, Charlotte could be your perfect match. Story
Under AKR Custody Review (Adoption temporarily on hold pending resolution of foster situation) Currently in Vancouver!!! Name: Mongmong Age: 4 years old Sex: Neutered Male Breed: JRT (Jack Russell Terrier) Mix Color: Black, tan, and white Weight: 9.5 kg (20.9 lbs) Height (at shoulder): 32 cm (12.6 inches)   Mongmong is a sweet and affectionate pup who loves people — whether you’re a familiar friend or someone he’s just met, he’ll happily come over for pets and attention. He’s especially gentle with young children and is comfortable being picked up with arms under his belly. Once he warms up, he’ll even show you his belly! He’s curious about other dogs and will approach them to say hello, though he doesn’t typically engage in play. Gentle with cats, not much interest in them. Mongmong has a moderate energy level and enjoys outdoor activities like walks, but settles down calmly afterward. He’s well-behaved on leash, doesn’t pull, and follows his human companion nicely. He is not food aggressive and remains calm in a kennel or during car rides. Mongmong was found injured, likely from a car accident, and was at risk of euthanasia at a municipal shelter. After being rescued, Mongmong had one eye removed due to phthisis bulbi, a condition that caused his eye to shrink and lose function and had hernia surgery on 25.05.01-but he’s recovered beautifully and is now ready for a fresh start Mongmong is a brave little survivor with a heart full of love. He’s looking for a forever home where he can feel safe, cherished, and loved — could that be with you? Story
MEET ROSIE 4 years old | Spayed Female | Terrier Mix | 6.3 kg (14 lbs) | 36 cm | Beige   Sweet, affectionate, and happiest around people, Rosie is a gentle little Terrier mix looking for her forever family.   Rescue Story   In December 2025, Rosie was brought to a shelter after a report that she had been hit by a car. Thankfully, she did not sustain any serious injuries from the accident. She is now safe and ready to start a new chapter with a family of her own.   With People   Rosie is a friendly and affectionate girl who loves people. She approaches both familiar faces and strangers easily, often rubbing against them for attention and happily accepting pets.   She can be picked up comfortably with an arm under her belly, and once she gets to know you, she’ll even roll over and show you her belly.   With Other Dogs   Rosie will approach unfamiliar dogs to say hello, but she generally isn’t interested in playing or interacting much with other dogs. She much prefers people!   She can feel nervous or uncomfortable around dogs larger than herself. Even with smaller dogs, she prefers those who respect her space and will avoid dogs that are overly pushy or energetic.   Rosie may be happiest as the only dog in the home or with a calm, respectful canine companion.   With Cats   Rosie’s reaction to cats has not yet been observed. A cat test can be arranged if needed.   Energy Level   Rosie has a moderate energy level. She enjoys spending time outdoors and going for walks, but after getting her exercise, she settles down nicely and is happy to relax.   On Walks   Rosie sometimes has her own ideas about which direction she’d like to go, but overall she follows her handler well and enjoys walking in quieter areas.   Busy roads with lots of traffic, loud noises, or sudden sounds can make her nervous, and she may hesitate or try to avoid going toward them. A quieter walking environment and patient guidance will help her feel more secure.   At Home   Rosie has many lovely everyday manners:   She shows no food guarding toward people or other dogs. She rarely barks. She stays calm in her kennel. She does most of her bathroom business outdoors.   Rosie at a glance: Affectionate • People-loving • Gentle • Moderate energy • Quiet • Calm in her kennel • Prefers respectful dogs • Happiest close to her humans   Rosie may not be looking for a canine best friend—because what she really wants is a human best friend.
