Harley joined Animal House Shelter after his beloved owner sadly passed away. This senior dog has a gentle soul and a loving nature. He would need to be in a home as the only animal. Harley is house-trained and enjoys car rides, making him a wonderful companion for adventures. Over the years, he’s learned several commands, including "lay," "down," "sit," and "come." Harley is ready to "motor" into your life and share his endless love and loyalty. All dogs are microchipped, neutered, current on all vaccines, heartworm tested (if age appropriate), and up-to-date on preventatives at the time of adoption. An application is required to view our adoptable pets. All household members and any dogs from the household need to be present to be able to adopt. Sasha how are you holding up? You are lonely and worried aren't you girl...the people you trusted to keep you safe all seem to drop you. Time and time again she is handed off like a baton only never making it to the finish line. Sasha is a big girl, she is strong, she is also timid even shy and needs to build her confidence. Sasha was living with a family that really didn't care for teaching her, training her, they just brought her up like a weed and when she was no longer convenient, they dropped her at a kill shelter. She struggled in the overcrowded environment, and the shelter let the previous owner know they will be putting her down, through some miracle she was given to another owner. This person got lost on their path and during her stay with this individual she was nervous, mishandled and sometimes mistreated. Sasha is like all of us, trying to phone home. Where exactly is that place. Sasha walks nicely on a leash and despite her confusing start to life-she loves taking direction from people. Sasha has a protective streak and will bond to her main person or people. She will honor you and will enjoy the guidance for many years to come. Sasha seems interested in people even kids but still needs to build her social skills. She was polite around a child and didn't try to get over to the child in any of setting manner. Sasha is like many dogs that end up in the rescue system undertrained, under loved, misguided and in need of structure and care. This girl needs some real TLC and a real shot at a true family. We are still learning how Sasha gets along with animals but will know real soon after we assess. Hi, my name is Waffle! If you're looking for a lovable, goofy pup with soft fur and a heart full of love, I might just be your perfect match! I’m about 2 to 3 years old, weigh around 55 pounds, and am likely a Black Mouth Cur possibly mixed with Shar Pei—and about 55 other breeds! I'm your classic Heinz 57. I’m neutered, housebroken, and sleep soundly in my crate at night. I also crate well when left alone during the day. While I’m not currently living with children, based on my gentle demeanor, my foster family believes I’d do great in a home with respectful kids. I get along wonderfully with dogs of all ages and sizes and would thrive with a confident canine buddy by my side. I’m not shy at all—I'm happy to greet new people and dogs with a wag and a smile. I’ve just started discovering the joy of toys and playtime, and I’m having a blast learning how to be a carefree dog. I’m also not bothered by loud noises or sudden sounds—I'm a pretty steady guy. However, I do have a high prey drive, so watch out squirrels, chipmunks, birds, and especially cats—here I come! Because of that, I’d do best in a home without small animals or feline friends. I’m learning to walk nicely on a leash and improving every day. With a little guidance, love, and a consistent routine, I’ll make the perfect, loyal addition to your family. Meet Whimsey! Female 1 year old 30 pounds Good with cats & dogs Whimsey is a pocket-sized bundle of joy with a big personality and an even bigger heart. This sweet girl is ready to find her true forever home. She was previously adopted from Safe Haven and returned through no fault of her own—sometimes the right match just takes a little time! Whimsey is incredibly smart and loves to learn. She already knows 15+ commands, has started in agility and scentwork classes, and is working hard in obedience training—pretty impressive for such a young pup! She’s still polishing her leash manners and crate skills, but she’s working hard every day to become the goodest girl. She is fully potty trained and does a great job alerting when she needs to go outside. She loves fetch—though she’s still perfecting the “bring it back” part. This energetic little lady would thrive in an active home, especially one interested in dog sports, running, biking, or any activity that keeps her brain and body busy. Mental stimulation is key for Whimsey—she’s clever, curious, and always ready for her next challenge! Personal space? Never heard of it. Whimsey is a certified lap dog who loves being close to her people. She adores playing with other dogs and is always up for wrestling, tug, or zoomies. She plays submissively in groups and does wonderfully with canine friends. Her favorite game with friends is chase and this speed demon can out run most everyone. She’s also curious about the cats in her foster home and enjoys following them around, but she’s respectful and backs off when they let her know they need space. Hi, I’m Happy — and I really live up to my name. I’m an almost 3-year-young mixed breed, possibly a Black Mouth Cur / German Shepherd mix, weighing about 60 lbs. I’m tall, lean, athletic… and truly the full package. Everyone who meets me says the same thing — I’m an amazing dog, and honestly, it’s a mystery why I haven’t been scooped up yet. My story started in rural Tennessee, where I was found as an underweight stray puppy. I spent 18 long months at a shelter with no one coming for me. The staff knew I deserved more, so I made my way to Chicago, where Safe Haven is helping me finally find the forever family I’ve been waiting for. I’m a young guy with great energy and an even better personality. I love long walks, runs, and playtime — I’d make an incredible running partner. At my foster home, I live for zooming around the fenced yard, so a 5-foot fence would be ideal for me. I’m playful and love my toys — squeaky balls, nylabones, and leather toys are some of my favorites. But I’m not just about action — I’ve got a calm, easygoing side too. I’m quiet and well-mannered in the house, happy to relax in my dog bed while you work or snooze nearby while you watch TV. I like being close to my people, and I’m especially in tune with your emotions — if you’re having a tough day, I’ll be right there to comfort you. Those soulful light brown eyes? They’re always looking out for you. I’m smart and eager to learn. I already know sit, stay, come, leave it, and down/off, and since I’m food motivated, training with me is fun and rewarding. I currently live with two other dogs and do just fine, though I’d really love a playmate closer to my size and energy level — or I’d be just as happy being your one and only. I do have a strong prey drive (squirrels and bunnies are very exciting!), so a cat-free home would be best. Because I’m strong and enthusiastic, I can sometimes forget my size when I’m excited. I’m fully housebroken and prefer a fenced yard for doing my business. I walk nicely on leash, and a harness helps keep me at my best. After spending so much time in a shelter, I don’t love crates or being confined, and I don’t love being alone for long stretches. I’d thrive in a home where someone is around most of the time — especially if you work from home. What I don’t understand is why I’m still waiting. I’m the kind of dog people say they’re looking for — loyal, smart, affectionate, active but able to relax, and deeply connected to my humans. I’m not just a good dog… I’m a really special one.
