Story
Abby’s story began during one of the hardest times Spokane has seen. She was found as a stray during the Spokane fires in August, with her paws badly burned and no family in sight. We brought her into our care, treated those painful paws, and gave her the time and TLC she needed to heal. Thankfully, her paws are feeling so much better now — but Abby’s story didn’t end there.
After her stray hold ended without anyone coming forward to claim her, we started looking for her forever family. And we’re still looking.
Abby has now been with us far too long. We’ve tried finding her an adopter. We’ve tried foster care — twice. And both times, Abby ultimately found her way back to us. Through all of this, one thing has remained true: Abby is a genuinely sweet, loving, caring girl who just needs someone who understands her. 🤎
Lately, Abby has been having a particularly hard time in her kennel. She can become overwhelmed and uncomfortable, and when people walk past without stopping, she often barks at them. We know what she’s trying to say.
“Hey! Please! Just give me a chance!” 🥺
Unfortunately, that kennel bark can easily be mistaken for Abby telling someone to go away — when really, she desperately wants the opposite. She wants attention. She wants to be noticed. She wants someone to see the sweet dog underneath all that frustration.
And Abby can be a little unsure when meeting new people, too. She may bark at someone she doesn’t know at first, so she needs a person who is willing to slow down, give her some time, and let her warm up at her own pace. We’ve noticed she tends to feel most comfortable with women, but she has absolutely warmed up to men, too! Patience is key with Abby. Once she trusts you and lets you in, you get to see just how incredibly special she is. 🤎
Once Abby is comfortable, she is the absolute best companion. She loves attention, loves getting pets, and is happiest when she can spend time with her people. She’s also great with other dogs and enjoys having canine friends around. 🐶🤎
And meeting Abby doesn’t have to happen through her kennel door! We have wonderful fenced yards right outside the shelter where you can spend some time with her, get her out of the kennel, and actually get to know the sweet girl underneath all that kennel frustration. 🥹🐾
Abby would do best in an adult-only home where she can have a little more peace and predictability. She can become overwhelmed by the energy and activity that comes with small children, so a home without young kids would allow her to feel much more comfortable and set her up for success.
She may not be the dog who grabs everyone’s attention from behind a kennel door. She may not be the dog who looks perfect when you walk past her kennel. But Abby is so much more than that moment.
She is the dog who survived having her paws burned during the Spokane fires.
She is the dog who healed.
She is the dog who kept loving people even after no one came looking for her.
She is the dog who has tried foster life twice and still hasn’t given up on finding her person.
And she is the dog who is still standing at her kennel door, barking at people as they walk by, hoping that maybe this time someone will stop. 🥺🤎
Abby has been waiting since August. She’s waited through healing, adoption attempts, foster homes, and countless people walking past her kennel.
We really, really want her next chapter to be different.
Abby doesn’t need everyone to choose her. She just needs one person to be patient enough to give her a chance.
