Story
Meet Gordo, an almost 3-year-old male Boxer/Pit Bull Terrier mix.Gordo is such a large handsome boy. He was still growing when he came to us in December of 2022 weighing a mere 66 pounds, but has now filled out and is weighing close to 80 pounds. After being in the shelter for a while Gordo is understandably a little "pent up" but after a good walk or time outside in our off leash area you see that he has quite a bit of potential. Gordo gets very excited when he sees other dogs and not all dogs enjoy the "energy" he gives off so if you have another dog in the home we recommend doing a meet and greet between your dog and Gordo prior to adoption.Gordo was in an home prior to coming to the YHS and did get some training at some point as he already knows the commands for sit and shake, he will eagerly do both for a treat. He was impounded by animal control and there were some abuse allegations so it is important to understand that Gordo has not always had an easy life. Gordo has a friendly personality and likes attention but is still working on some basics such as "off" as some time he doesn't want to wait for you to dish out the love. He doesn't understand his size all the time and can get a bit over enthusiastic when playing tug-of-war or when he gets excited about something so we think that a home without kids would be best for now. That's not to say Gordo wouldn't love to have to kiddos keep him company in his future, we just think he needs some stability and training to polish him off so he doesn't accidentally knock a kid over with his enthusiasm or get mouthy with them while playing. If you are looking for a dog that you can work with and grow with Gordo might be the boy for you. He doesn't need much before he becomes a fantastic member of doggie society. If you are interested in adopting this pet please fill out an adoption questionnaire at www.yakimahumane.org. A Yakima Humane Society staff member will contact you once your questionnaire has been received.A Picture says 1000 words...right? While an animal's picture draws interest, the reality is that as a potential adopter most people would like as much information as possible about a pet. The Yakima Humane Society is an open admission shelter. What does this mean? Over 90% of the pets at the adoption center arrive as strays, no history of behavior or medical care is known. Adding a pet to your family is a big responsibility. Please research carefully and remember that adoption is life saving. Adopt Don't Shop.

Story
Meet Betty, a 1/5-year-old female Boxer mix.Betty is very typical of her breed. She has a lot of energy and gets excited to get outside. Betty does well on her leash and will sit right at your feet. She loves to get out in the play yard and go for walks in the park. While Betty has been very social at the adoption center it is important that she meet all K9's in a home prior to adoption to make sure they can match her personality and energy level. This pet is available for adoption on 7/2/23 at the Yakima Humane Society adoption center. If you recognize this animal please contact the adoption center at 509-457-6854.If you are interested in adopting this pet please fill out an adoption questionnaire at www.yakimahumane.org. A Yakima Humane Society staff member will contact you once your questionnaire has been received. Adopters are welcome to visit the adoption center Monday-Saturday. A Picture says 1000 words...right? Story
Meet Caramelo, a nine month old Boxer/American Staffie mix. At least that is what we think Caramelo's breed mix is, we also suspect there may be some Goblin or other character from Lord of the Rings mixed in there, but that is up to you to decide. Caramelo was brought in as a stray with Cookie Dough and they got along well together but we always recommend a dog meet and greet if you have another canine companion at home. They were actually both found behind the YHS property along with three cats. Caramelo did fine with those three cats but it is important to remember that new cats are still really fun to meet and to acclimate her to a home with cats might take a bit of time and reinforcement, just like with any new dog. Caramelo is still very much a puppy so we don't see any issues with her acclimating to a home with other dogs, especially if they want to play. This friendly, active girl loves to go for walks and get very excited to say HI to everyone. Caramelo loves treats but she did come into our shelter pretty hungry so she is still learning how to take them nicely, a flat hand works best when giving her a goodie right now. Since she is treat motivated training should be a breeze if you out in a little time, she already sits on command! With a couple puppy manners we see her being a top notch dog!
