Story
Meet Maple. This adorable girl was found running as a stray in Chester, SC. Sadly, stray Beagles are not uncommon in the region. They are still used for small game hunting and are often kept outside, living isolated in hutches or pens. If they won’t hunt, they are regularly set free by their owners with no care for their welfare. It’s not uncommon to see Beagles roaming in the area, often in pairs.  Thankfully, Maple was taken in by a local resident who saw her roaming on his property. There was no room at the local shelter, so he kept her until he could find a rescue to take her. We were happy to help this sweet girl, and she’s had an easy transition to home life. Maple was fostered in an active home with a mom, dad, two young dog playmates, and three kids, 5, 8, and 10 years old. She was timid when she first arrived and needed a few days to acclimate to a new home environment.   FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 3/19/24  Maple has been in her foster home for two weeks now, so we checked in with her foster mom, Ashley, for an update:  “Maple is doing well. She is best buddies with our dog, Shadow. They chase each other all over the backyard, and she loves to run and chase the kids around the yard as well. Her little personality is coming out more each day. I would describe her as moderately active. She has her moments of zoomies and wants to run and play, but she also is good to hang out on the couch while we work at home.  She is housetrained but needs to be let out first thing in the morning. We make sure she has regular potty breaks throughout the day as she’s still a young pup. She is also crate-trained and goes in her crate when we leave the house. We’ve been practicing leash walks and she’s gaining confidence on leash. She does best with a harness as she tends to pull and choke herself with a regular collar. She does not like to go potty while on a leash so it would be helpful for her to have a fenced-in yard. She loves the freedom of the fenced yard and really enjoys exploring. She’s learned her name and has started coming when called from the backyard!  She is shy at first but warms up pretty quickly, and has done with visitors who come to our house. She’s a nice combination of connected with some independence mixed in. She likes to snuggle and wants to be with people, but also wants to have her own space. She loves our kids and is a great family dog. I think she would be best with kids at least 5 and older. She gets scared by the loud noises of the younger toddler we have had her around.  I think she will do best in a home with another dog. She needs a playmate to run zoomies with and get her energy out. She’s very adolescent-like and loves to chew, so toys are a must. Maple is spunky and fun and we really enjoy fostering her.”  *******  Maple is a fun, sweet girl who will make a great companion and playmate for your pups and kids. She would love a pup playmate in her home and kids are welcome too.   Apply today!  BREED ESTIMATE: Beagle  GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT:  ~20 lbs  APPROXIMATE AGE: ~  2 years old COAT TYPE: Short/medium coat ADOPTION FEE: $425 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/spayed/microchipped LOCATION:  Alexandria, VA    FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Story
Meet Puppi! This adorable little nugget originally belonged to a hunter who got her as a puppy and kept her in a concrete enclosure. She was never let out except to hunt and lived a pretty isolated existence. Sadly, this is the way of life for many Beagles in the south. When her owner realized she would not hunt with his pack, he decided that he was going to sell or breed her. Thankfully, one of our foster moms knew of Puppi’s situation and convinced him to release Puppi to her care. Puppi is only about a year old and is so fortunate to get this second chance. Puppi has been in her foster home for over a month now, living with a mom, dad, teen daughter, 4 other dogs, and 2 cats. It’s an active home and Puppi has acclimated well to home life. It was an easy integration and she’s a social dog by nature. She meets new dogs well and enjoys running and playing with her pack. She tries to play with the cats too, but in a gentle, curious way, and not at all aggressive. This adorable girl is still an adolescent, and a typical curious, mischievous Beagle. She has a moderate energy level but loves to play. Everything is a toy to her, so you have to watch her inside. She likes to drag blankets off the bed and clothes out of hampers, but she is not destructive and doesn't chew things up. She is crate-trained and housetrained, but still learning the rules of home life. Puppi’s leash skills are still a work in progress but have greatly improved since we met her. Initially, she would freeze on leash, not knowing what to make of it, and was fearful around crowded, noisy areas. She needed time to get exposure to the world outside of a concrete pen. But her foster mom has been practicing on leash with her, and she gets better every day. She's still easier to walk in less crowded spaces but has been to a few festivals, breweries, and stores. Once she’s comfortable, she does great meeting new people (even kids) and other dogs. She likes to sniff while she's walking, but she's not led by her nose and has never once tried to leave the yard We think Puppi would do well as part of a pack or could be an only dog too. She really likes attention from her humans and would enjoy being someone's one and only. We think she’ll make a great family dog and would do well with kids. She likes to be held, is very easy to handle, and is not a mouthy dog. She’s confident and relaxed inside the home, and not startled by sudden movements. We can tell she’s happy to be in a home and part of a family. This cutie will be coming to town in early May. Apply today!
