Story
Emmie Emmie is a Female Shih Tzu mix DOB: April of 2023 Adoption fee: $200.00 I am new to the shelter. I am a little anxious in my new environment but have been making friends with the staff quickly. I can be selective with people, so I am not fit for a first-time pet owner, and I would be much more comfortable with children over the age of 12 years. I am energetic and not fit for someone wanting a lap dog. I love to run and play with my friend Sophie. I have met other dogs, but I have shown I’d like to be the top dog. A meet and greet is required prior to adoption, there are no guarantees. I may require a physically fenced yard, pending previous experience, location, and other plans for containment. I love attention. I can be very demanding about it. I will need a person, couple or family dedicated to helping me understand what behaviors are appropriate and which ones are not.

Story
Sophie Sophie is a Female Shih Tzu mix DOB: April of 2024 Adoption fee: $200.00 I am a sweet little girl that loves attention. I have not had much training and will need help with leash work. Although you can’t really tell, I have beautiful brown eyes. I seem even tempered but I do have lots of fun and playful energy. If you are looking for a lap dog, yes, I will sit on your lap, but it doesn’t last long. I am young and I love to play. I should match with another dog. Emmie is my pal, and we do well together but do not have to be adopted together. We compete for attention. I will require someone with breed experience. I have not been around children and would do best with older children. I may require a physically fenced yard pending your previous experience, location and other plans for containment

Story
Name: Maggie Gender: Spayed Female Breed Guess: Shih Tzu mix Age: 14 years old Weight Guess: 13 pounds Adoption fee: $300 Am I good with: Kids: Unknown Cats: Will test upon request Dogs: Yes, Meet and Greet Required About me: Hi there, I'm Maggie, a wise 14-year-old Shih Tzu with a silver muzzle and a heart full of love. I move at my own gentle pace, enjoying short leisurely strolls, and plenty of cozy naps. My favorite things are soft belly rubs, warm laps, and snoozing beside my humans. I may be a senior, but I still have plenty of love and quiet snuggles to give. Ready for a gentle, devoted companion?? That's me in a nutshell! I've been at the ARP since 4/27/25 and am currently at the ARP. The Animal Rescue Project (www.animalrescueproject.org) is committed to the best possible veterinary care for the pets it rescues and it is looking for adopters who will be similarly committed. Adoptions are NOT first come, first served! We seek to choose the best fit for the approved adopter and pet. Please understand that these animals are still new to us and their needs and requirements can change at any time as we learn more about them. We will try our best to get them updated online as soon as possible. All dogs and puppies are given a general check-up when they enter our program. They receive medication to remove any intestinal parasites (worms), fleas, and ticks they may have. Dogs greater than six months of age are checked for heartworm. If heartworm positive, the Animal Rescue Project treats the disease. Dogs and pups receive all age-appropriate vaccinations for distemper, and dogs greater than four months of age are also vaccinated for rabies, in compliance with State of Michigan laws. All dogs are also microchipped. Most dogs and older puppies are spayed or neutered before adoption. In the case of puppies not old enough to be safely sterilized, a $50 deposit is required at the time of adoption and is refunded to the adopter with proof of sterilization. The Animal Rescue Project requires every adopter to establish an active relationship with a veterinarian no later than 10 days after adoption. Adopters will receive a plan for routine veterinary care at the time of adoption and are expected to work with their vet to complete the plan.
