For Adoption: Merry! Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. Meet Merry, an adorable 4 year old Shih Tzu ready to find her forever home. If this is a breed of dog that has been on the top of your wish list then have a read, ‘cuz this here is a wonderful little dog. Weighing in at 11lbs this spunky sweetheart is a perfect sized, comical little companion. She came to us from a puppy mill operation as a breeding mom. As such, she has potentially spent her life in a kennel environment so we are teaching her all about the world around her. Merry is equal parts playful, sweet, and shy. New things are exciting but she prefers to explore them with a human right next to her. Once she realizes that these things are actually fun, or not dangerous, she is all in and ready to go. Gradual, consistent exposure to the world around her with a trusting hand is what she needs to thrive. Merry is not one who spoils humans with kisses at this point but she likes to sneak little licks of appreciation in here and there. Belly rubs, ear and neck scratches are the best and she will lean in and flop over into a state of bliss when you hit the right spot. Merry has discovered the joy of playing excitedly with toys. She loves to cart around just about anything but a soft, squishy toy is a fan favourite. Due to her petite legs she can’t make the jump up onto the couch or bed, but she’d love a boost to join you. She is still figuring out how to play with one of her foster brothers but adores playing chase in the backyard and loves the snow! Merry has mastered coming in and out the back door and is working on confidence with stairs. Cheers of encouragement really get her up them :) She is crate trained and is quiet in the crate. She is crated whenever we aren’t home and at night. She sleeps the whole night through with a blanket in her crate, just be sure to take an extra bio-break before bed time. Merry has been great with housetraining. She has occasionally alerted with a small bark & whine to ask to be taken out so you need to be proactive and let her out regularly. We have had no accidents in the house as we follow this diligently. A house with a fenced backyard would be amazing for Merry as she loves to run freely in the yard and play…this is where she really comes alive! And snow? Best thing ever! But she doesn’t enjoy being outside by herself; she loves people or a puppy pal out with her. Merry is learning to walk on leash, this will take time and practice. She is nervous of this big world so we ensure we visit less busy areas right now. She is a sensitive girly and still learning about the world outside of a kennel, and we don’t want to overwhelm or harm her budding confidence. She will require a gentle and gradual introduction to her new neighbourhood, but come spring, I have no doubt she’ll love exploring green spaces and trails with her family. Merry is a quiet dog in general but is an alert barker, so she wouldn’t be suited to an attached dwelling situation. She is being fostered with other dogs that are calm, relatively quiet, and well-mannered dogs who gave her the space she needed and by day 3 she was comfortable with them all. She would do fine in a home with a dog just like her foster dog siblings who is a passive dog around the same size or slightly larger, who is confident and also easy going. She has shown some sassiness around a sibling coming too close while eating in her crate but she is easily corrected and is learning she doesn’t need to be greedy over anything. She would do just as well being the only dog in the home and getting all of her people’s attention. Cats have not been introduced. She could go to a home with a totally dog savvy cat that will give her space and ignore her, but any cat that will pester or swat at her will be too much for her at this time. Merry is a spunky, energetic, and good natured dog and could potentially share her home with gentle natured children over the age of 10 years old. A chaotic, busy or loud home would be too overwhelming, but quieter kids who know how to calmly interact with a dog and would enjoy puppy kisses, having her snuggle up beside them and playing with her gently would be nice for Merry. Car rides aren’t mastered quite yet but this is a work in progress. She is well mannered, quiet, but still a little nervous. Again, a short while ago she was living in a kennel, so all things are new to her. For car rides we crate for her safety and security. She hasn’t experienced any car sickness and on longer rides, tends to lay down and take a nap. She enjoys meeting new people in a quiet area. Give this dog another 6 months and she is going to be a social butterfly, she just needs to build more confidence in the big world around her. She enjoys treats and food and so training her via positive reinforcement with praise and treat rewards works really well. She is incredibly smart, is proving to be quite the problem solver with an excellent memory and will take to training well. True to the breed nature, she loves to play, is cheerful, eager to please, and loves learning new things. Merry is a moderately active dog and is nicely sated with a couple good walks a day and some yard play. But, she does need these walks and play time daily as she has shown herself to be quite the athletic little dog. We want Merry to live her best life so her forever family needs to be invested in her training and socialization as well as having her physical needs met. This girl has so much potential and we want to see her have the chance to achieve it. In fact, we have no doubt she is going to become an awesome little adventure buddy! She has been to the vet and gotten all of her medical needs taken care of - she is a healthy dog. She is at a perfect age to join a family and continue on her journey of learning about the world around her. Merry’s people need to be kind, caring, and ready for fun! Shih Tzus are a fabulous dog for the right person/family and we are looking for that perfect fit. We know that they are adorable, especially with their little legs, and little fluffy faces, but we also need to take into account that they are an intelligent people pleaser and very outgoing. If you know that Shih Tzus are the breed for you and your lifestyle tell us why in the adoption application! We want to hear from you! Story
Meet Pepsi 🐶✨ Pepsi is a 5-year-old Shih Tzu mix weighing approximately 25 lbs and currently working hard on her weight-loss journey! Currently being fostered in Brantford ON Through no fault of her own, Pepsi found herself in foster care—and she settled in immediately. She’s a wonderfully adaptable girl who has even spent the holidays travelling with her foster family. While she does experience some mild car anxiety, she does beautifully when she can sit with a trusted human by her side. Pepsi has been exposed to children as young as 3, dogs of all sizes (from tiny 2 kg pups to extra-large 60 kg friends), and even cats—and she’s done fantastic with everyone! She is a loving, social sweetheart with excellent people skills. Pepsi is very respectful and clear about her boundaries and communicates beautifully with other dogs when she’s had enough—always in the kindest way. She has never shown any aggressive or mean behaviour toward people or animals. She’ll happily run around with other dogs but is still learning how to play. Toys aren’t really her thing yet, but belly rubs? Those are her absolute favourite! Pepsi is both house-trained and pee-pad trained when needed. She’s flexible with sleeping arrangements—free-range in the living room at home, or happily curled up on her own bed while travelling. Best of all, she’s not destructive. Medically, Pepsi has been diagnosed with luxating patellas and mild dry, flaky skin. When she was spayed, she also had her umbilical hernia repaired. She is fully healed and up to date on all vaccinations. Overall, Pepsi is an incredible cuddle-bug with nothing but positive vibes to offer. She would thrive in almost any loving home and is ready to find her forever family. 💕 Approved adopters please send your hold requests to the email you were given.
