Story
ABOUT BEAR Bear is a 6-year-old Yorkie boy hoping for a fresh start. He came to HAP when his owners were no longer able to care for him, and sadly, he arrived in rough shape. Bear was suffering from severe dermatitis, eye and ear infections, and significant obesity. While he is now on a weight-management plan and his skin is slowly but surely clearing up, his eyes were damaged beyond repair, and he required the enucleation of both eyes. Now, Bear is a sweet, resilient boy who’s navigating the world with fresh eyes, just not in the way he once did. Bear is learning to explore life through his other senses. Each day brings progress, as he’s steadily figuring out his surroundings, bumping into fewer things as his confidence grows. Since everything in the world is still so new, Bear will thrive in a patient, understanding home that’s committed to keeping his environment safe and predictable. While he was in constant pain before surgery, his discomfort sometimes caused him to act out. Now that he’s healing, the only grumpy moment he’s shown is when he had to wear the dreaded cone. Thankfully, Bear has healed beautifully and now he is thriving without a cone. Despite all he’s been through, Bear’s gentle spirit shines. He loves treats, and will happily sniff them out from across the room, and he’s been enjoying enrichment activities like snuffle mats that let him use his sharp nose. He also adores being talked to; he’ll tilt his head sweetly as he listens, taking in every word. While belly rubs aren’t really his style, he’ll gladly relax beside you and soak in some soft, reassuring pets. Bear is brave, loving, and doing his best to adjust. With patience, kindness, and a calm environment, he’ll continue to blossom into the wonderful companion he’s meant to be. Story
Meet Fenris Fenris is our almost four year old chihuahua mix that recently came to HAP when his previous owner could no longer care for him. Since he's spent his entire life in a loving home, he's struggled adjusting to the stress of shelter life. In typical chihuahua fashion, he's nervous when meeting new people but with some time, patience, and treats, he does warm up and turns into a little bundle of love. Fenris was under socialized growing up so he would do best as the only animal in the home. We've seen glimpses of Fenris's loving and playful personality but he's looking for an adopter that will give him the time and space to understand him and earn his trust. We'll continue to update Fenris as he settles in and we get to know him more! ***Fenris needs to be the only animal in the home and needs to be an adult only home.*** If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Story
Meet Pluto 🐾 Please read the bio in full for answers to common questions. If you have a question not covered here, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/. Because all of our dogs live in foster homes, meet-and-greets are scheduled only after a completed application is received. Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance of Wilmington, DE so our volunteers can conduct an in-person home visit. Pluto is a tiny but mighty super senior Chihuahua, estimated to be 14–16 years young and weighing in at just 10 pounds. This quiet little gentleman is the definition of low maintenance. He enjoys his independence, loves a cozy nap spot, and keeps life simple and calm. Pluto came to us as an owner surrender after his beloved human passed away. He spent nearly a year being shuffled among relatives before a caring family member reached out to give him the comfortable life he deserves. Since joining us, Pluto has received the medical care he needed, including a dental, neuter, and removal of his right eye due to a corneal rupture. He has been an independent little guy from the very beginning. Medically, Pluto has a high-grade heart murmur and arthritis, both of which are well-managed with monthly medications (Vetmedin approximately $75/month and gabapentin approximately $12/month). Because of his heart condition and advanced age, Pluto is considered a super senior whose remaining time may be shorter rather than longer — but he is currently stable and enjoying life at his own pace. Pluto is still polishing his housebreaking skills and does very well with pee pads and regular potty breaks every 4–6 hours. He does not do stairs and is not a leash walker (likely due to having had a less mobile owner in the past), and he absolutely despises car rides. The good news? He barely barks, is fine being handled, and is perfectly content lounging in his dog bed or quietly cruising around the house. He gets along with dogs, cats, and other animals, though he prefers to dine alone due to mild food guarding (he may growl if another dog approaches his bowl). Pluto would do best in a calm home, ideally with a senior or quiet household with older children or teens. He does not need a fenced yard and is perfectly fine being left in a room or large area when home alone. Pluto’s ideal person is someone who appreciates an independent, quirky little companion — a buddy who enjoys being near his people but still likes to do things on his own terms. If you are looking for a gentle, low-key friend to share quiet days and cozy nights, Pluto may just be your perfect match. 💙
