Meet Scout. This sweet little boy has been through so much and is looking for a home that understands that he will take a bit of patience and time to learn to trust. This boy has such a big heart, and is a total love bug once he learns that he is safe! Scout is a 1 year old, 13 lb Shih Tzu / Poodle mix. Farfel's can't swear to the accuracy of his breed mix as no DNA test was done. It was the opinion of New Mexico veterinarians and we're going to stay with their educated guess. Scout was picked up as a stray in New Mexico and he was extremely matted. When they shaved his matted hair off, they saw that his left eye was bulging out of its socket, and unfortunately it could not be saved. Understandably, he was confused getting picked up off the streets, going into a scary shelter, and loosing an eye. But he has been adjusting very well since getting to Colorado, and into foster care. Scout can be a little shy when meeting new people, but he is never rude or aggressive at all. He is such a lover boy at heart. Just a bit shy at first. We learned that having a friendly dog buddy in the home makes a huge difference for this sweet boy! We’ve seen firsthand just how much Scout blossoms in a home with another dog. In a foster home with a dog friend, Scout warmed up to his foster mom and her preteen daughter in just a few days. He loves playing with and snuggling up to his foster's dog, and quickly became a much happier, more confident little guy. Having another dog around helps Scout feel safe and gives him a friend to show him the ropes while he learns to trust his new people. Because we’ve seen how much having a doggy friend helps him feel comfortable and secure, Scout will need a home with another friendly, welcoming dog. We are not willing to put Scout's comfortability aside and adopt him to a home without another dog. From Scout's foster: * * * * "Scout started off super shy, but has warmed up and come so far! He was very scared the day he arrived on transport to Colorado, which is understandable since it's a scary thing. Since settling into my home, he's warmed up and totally come out of his shell. He kept to himself for the first few days. His adopter should prepare to just give him space and time at first, and let him come around on his own terms. His crate is his safe space, and he would spend a lot of time in there for the first few days. But soon (by day 2) he started venturing out and playing with toys and coming to hangout on the couch with us! He sleeps under my desk while I work. He likes small squeaky toys. He LOVES dog beds! Walks are still a bit scary for him still, and something he definitely isn't used to. So he will need some time and patience as he learns how to walk on a leash and that walks aren't so scary! A home with a yard would be ideal for him, so he can have the yard and his adopter won't need to worry about taking him on a walk for the first week or so, until he is more comfortable. He is still warming up and unsure about pets sometimes, but he is learning that we are safe! By night 3 he slept in bed with me, and was comfortable being carried out to the yard in the morning to potty and explored the yard. He is so sweet. Just give him a few days to feel comfortable! He does well with other dogs, and a home with another small, confident dog to show him the ropes would really be good for him! He is food motivated and spray cheese is the way to his heart. He is a sweet boy who just needs a little time to realize you are safe and he is a lover! Scout update! He's now been with me for a week and a half and he's doing so good!!! He is still working on going potty outside every time but overall is doing a pretty good job. Sleeping close to me on the bed and letting me give him pets and eat scratches. Not a single bark, just excitement squeals when I get home. Wants to be with people, but still learning to fully trust. Def loves his chew and squeaky toys. After 7 days with me, I took him and my dog on a walk together, because Scout trusts me now. We went slow, and at his pace, but he really followed my dogs lead." * * * * This sweet guy, with a gorgeous shed-free coat (excellent for those with allergy concerns ) will require a lifelong commitment to periodic grooming and excellent nutrition. Current research is very clear that the best diet we can provide for our pets is a fresh, human grade natural diet. Farfel's recommends Chi Diet (chidog.com) due to our personal experience with our own dogs. It's one of the most important choices we make for our dogs great health and longevity. Since Scout is just a young guy, he's a blank slate just waiting for a kind and patient human to show him the way. He has all the potential in the world to be an awesome and loving best friend. Scout will form firm bonds with his family and learn socialization skills through virtual or in-person positive reinforcement / force-free Obedience Classes. These classes will make a profound difference in a young dog's ultimate behavior and in his relationship / bonding with his people. It does take time and commitment, yet pays off a thousand times over when you have a dog that can accompany you out in the world with excellent behavior. Farfel's Rescue feels very strongly that every dog deserves the opportunity for formal virtual or in-person positive reinforcement / force-free training classes. We therefore aren't willing to adopt Scout out to a home that doesn't choose to offer him this training opportunity. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of approved virtual and in-person positive reinforcement / force-free trainers in your area. Because Scout is a bit unsure and learning to trust, though he is a sweet boy, we know that he would be too overwhelmed in a home with kids. Scout will be up to date on his vetting / vaccinations to be in line with our commitment to only adopting out healthy dogs.
