Oh, sweet Beau... this little guy has had one seriously rough last few weeks.
Beau is a 10 year old, 11 pound Yorkie/Maltese mix who was surrendered to our partner shelter in New Mexico after his owner passed away. His doggy brother also didn't make it.
Beau himself was in surprisingly good health, but it was immediately obvious that he had not been properly cared for toward the end of his owner's life. He was severely matted, and both of his eyeballs were bulging painfully from his head. Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done to save his eyes, and both had to be removed. And that wasn't all. Beau also needed to be neutered and had to have the rest of his teeth removed. So, in a very short amount of time, this poor little guy lost his owner, lost his doggy companion, lost both of his eyes, lost all of his teeth, and lost his...well, was neutered. Seriously, Beau has been through enough!
We knew we had to step in and give this little senior the chance he deserves to enjoy his golden years surrounded by love.
Beau was shaved down after arriving and feels SO much better now that he isn't carrying around a painful, tangled coat. He is also learning how to navigate the world as a newly blind dog. He is already getting the hang of it and becoming more confident every day!
We have ordered Beau a special harness with a halo that extends out in front of his face. This is an amazing tool for newly blind dogs because it helps prevent them from bumping their face into things while they learn their surroundings. Of course, his halo harness will be going home with him when he is adopted.
Because Beau no longer has any teeth, he needs to eat wet food or dehydrated, powder-type food that is rehydrated with water. This is an easy accommodation, and we are just thrilled that this little guy is finally comfortable and pain-free.
And despite everything he has been through, Beau is an absolute sweetheart. He is friendly, cuddly, gentle, and loves being around his people. He is also good with other dogs and cats!
Beau has lost so much, but he hasn't lost his ability to love. He is ready for a soft place to land where he can spend his golden years being spoiled exactly as he should have been all along.
Beau is a non- shedding guy (and considered to be one of the most hypoallergenic breed mixes available today). He will therefore require a lifelong commitment to periodic grooming (approximately every 8 - 10 weeks) and excellent nutrition. A daily salmon oil supplement coupled with 5 star food is a great regimen to keep his cottony-soft coat healthy and matte-free.
Current research is very clear that the best diet we can provide for our pets is a fresh, human grade diet. Farfel's recommends Chi Diet (chidog.com) due to our personal experience with our own dogs. It's one of the most important choices we make for our dogs great health and longevity.
