Meet Beach Ball!
Beach Ball is a 1-year-old, 11-pound sweetheart who was found as a stray and brought to CACC with a badly injured back left leg. Understandably, she was frightened, uncomfortable, and unsure of everything around her.
But after just a few days in a foster home, Beach Ball is already a completely different dog.
Once she realized she was safe, her personality blossomed. She is incredibly cuddly and affectionate and absolutely loves being close to her people. Her favorite place is curled up in a lap, soaking up attention and enjoying the comfort of finally having a safe place to relax.
Beach Ball is scheduled to have her injured back left leg amputated on September 30, but she is available for adoption before her surgery. And while “amputation” can sound scary, becoming a tripod dog is really not expected to slow Beach down much at all.
She already gets around almost entirely on three legs because she doesn’t use her injured leg now. She walks around the house, gets where she wants to go, and can even handle stairs just fine. In many ways, she is already living like a tripod—the surgery will simply remove the painful, unusable leg that she’s currently carrying around.
Dogs generally adapt incredibly well to life on three legs, especially young, small dogs like Beach. Her day-to-day mobility is expected to be minimally impacted, and after her initial recovery, she should still be able to walk, play, use stairs, explore, and enjoy life just like other dogs. The amputation is a routine procedure, and recovery is typically quick, with about two weeks of healing time.
For now, her foster family is keeping her activity limited while she waits for surgery. She is doing wonderfully using pee pads and has also shown that she can share her space with both dogs and cats.
Beach has also made huge progress with visitors. After just a couple of introductions—and a little cheese bribery—she warms up quickly and is happy to make new friends. Her confidence is growing by the day, and it’s been amazing to watch her realize that people can be safe, kind, and worth cuddling.
Beach Ball has already shown just how quickly she can blossom with a little love and security. She may be losing a leg, but she certainly isn’t losing her independence, her sweetness, or her ability to enjoy life.
