Hi! My name is Butch. I am a 3 yr old male St Bernard and am settling into rescue. Come back to learn more about me as I get to know my foster family!
Butch has been foster care almost two weeks and this is what we know so far. Butch loves human attention! The shelter noted he is apprehensive with men, but he has been fine with his foster dad. Butch is doing well in the house, he will bark when he hears something unexpected (train, door opening/closing, etc.). The first couple of days, he would bark some at the resident dogs through the closed door, but that has pretty much stopped, unless they are being loud or whining. He is currently housed with his sister, but he has not seen any of the resident dogs yet. Butch appears to have a more dominant personality and can be a bit bossy with his sister. He has also shown some mild resource guarding behaviors (towards his sister, not people); he got snarky with her when food bowls were being prepped on the counter (they are separated for actual feeding, and now also while food bowls are present). Butch got snarky with his sister over foster mom's attention while she was sitting with them. His sister backs off, but he would not do well with another dominant dog who is going to take offense to his snark. His paperwork from the shelter says he likes kids, but it also says he will protect the kids from the adults in the home. This can be problematic. Despite these quirks, Butch is really sweet and loving. He just needs to learn his place.
Butch would do best with an adopter who will be a strong leader and let him know his place in the pack. He needs leash work and is extremely strong, so a fenced yard would definitely be helpful until he learns more leash manners. He can be in a home with other dogs, as long as they are more submissive and give him his space. It's possible this behavior is caused by all the recent changes in his life.
