Story
- A real people dog who just wants to love and be loved; spent some time in a foster home and was his family's little shadow- Loves butt scratches, belly rubs, and comfy places to chill; LOVES a good nap and sleeps in all sorts of silly positions - Can be a total goofball when in a playful mood and loves to run around with you or his toys, but when he's done he will plop down for a nice nap or some cuddle time - Especially enjoys playing with stuffies and Kongs - Will sometimes get excited when meeting new people and make a grumbly noise to signal that wants some attention - Loves playing in the yard and loves walks; his foster family said when he was in a curious mood he would pull a bit, but other than that did a great job walking, harness or not - he even went on a short run with a family member while in his foster home- Knows sit, stay, shake, down and come and is VERY treat-motivated; could probably learn anything with treats as rewards- Overall has a good handle on potty training; had a couple accidents in his foster home, but that's not unusual for any dog when adjusting to a new setting or schedule, so please plan to give him time to acclimate- When his foster family left, he would just relax on the couch or his bed and wait for them to come back - Has done great in the car and just lays down or sticks his head out the window - Overall has been very uncomfortable around other dogs in the shelter environment and has struggled with direct interaction and gone out of his way to avoid other dogs; he did meet a shy small dog while in his foster home, and they both sniffed and then ignored each other, but dogs who want to interact make him incredibly uncomfortable; to set him up for success, he needs to be the only dog in his new home, and he is likely not a candidate for places like dog parks or dog-friendly events - Needs a home with no cats or small animals - Young, busy or active kids can be too much for him, so he's looking for a teens-and-up home right now - Has a chronic ear condition that may require medication or monitoring in the future; may also have allergies (more info at ARL) This pet qualifies for our 7-day Foster-to-Adopt program. If you're interested in fostering to adopt, please reach out to meetme@arl-iowa.org.All adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and DA2PPV as appropriate for their age)The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. Primary Color: Black Secondary Color: White Weight: 77.5 Age: 3yrs 6mths 3wks

Story
- Can be shy at first, but opens up with the help of treats and toys and will show you his goofy personality as he gets more comfortable - Loves going on walks and does best with a harness- Knows sit and likes treats, so he'd be a lot of fun to train - Has been very good for baths here in the shelter - Tends to be introverted around other dogs and may prefer one-on-one interactions or smaller groups of dog friends; may not be comfortable in places where there are a lot of dogs and may prefer to be the only dog in his home (dog intro required) - Looking for a teens-and-up home right now- We don't know his history with cats - May have allergies (more info at ARL) This pet qualifies for our 7-day Foster-to-Adopt program. Story
Mackinaw Have you ever watched the TV show, “The Incredible Dr. Pol”? Well, my foster mom has been binge watching the show and trying to figure out a name for me and since the show is based in Michigan, she came up with my name, which is Mackinaw. It means ‘large turtle’ in the Ojibwa language, one of the Indian tribes in the area. I don’t think I look like a large turtle but whatever…. I am probably a Bernese Mountain Dog mix of some sort, and I am very loveable and sweet. I was found in the middle of the road and my foster mom was concerned that I was thrown from a car because I was not using my left rear leg as well as I was using the right one. But after some crate rest for a week and a visit to the vet to get an exam and some x-rays done, I am happy to say that nothing is broken and I am using my legs like I am supposed to now. Very good news! I will probably be a large medium or a small large size, if that makes sense. About 50-60 pounds or so. But since my breed is based on my handsomely good looks, it is hard to tell how big I will be when I grow up. And my breed is just a guess anyhow, only a DNA test will tell for sure, but I am 100% purebred lover boy. I was born about the third of November of 2025 and will be available for my new forever home after I get fixed in January 2026. Adoption fee in Texas is $250. Out of State adoption fee is $550 with transport and fuel surcharge.
