Story
MeShell MaBelle is a story of quiet endurance and beautiful transformation. At three years old and 60 pounds, this striking black Standard Poodle embodies everything people love about the breed — intelligence, sensitivity, and a deep emotional awareness of her people. For much of her early life, MeShell tried to be content with limited interaction and long hours alone. While she loved her family, the lack of stimulation and extended crate confinement placed stress on her gentle system, eventually leading to a diagnosis of Addison’s Disease — a condition that is very manageable, especially in a home built on routine, consistency, and love. Everything changed when MeShell entered foster care. Surrounded for the first time by open skies, fresh air, and patient guidance, she began discovering what life could be. On a lively farm filled with dogs of all sizes, curious cats, horses, donkeys, and even pigs, MeShell absorbed new experiences with quiet determination. She learned how to play, how to relax in the presence of others, and how to take joy in simple freedoms — running through tall grass, resting near trusted humans, and curling up beside a canine companion at the end of the day. Today, MeShell is a happy, affectionate, and energetic girl who thrives on companionship and gentle structure. She is deeply people-oriented and does best when she is included, seen, and emotionally connected to her humans. Her care needs are straightforward: a daily pill, a once-monthly injection, and a lifelong promise that she will never again be overlooked. What she gives in return is immeasurable — loyalty, intelligence, and a love that feels steady, intentional, and profoundly sincere. MeShell MaBelle is ready to leave her past behind and step fully into a future where she is cherished as both a companion and a soul. If you feel a pull toward a dog who has known hardship but still offers her whole heart, she may be the one you’ve been waiting for. Story
Some dogs arrive like open books. Others arrive like locked diaries, daring the world to prove it deserves the key.Leo is the second kind.Leo is a 6-year-old Pomeranian-Poodle mix who came to us after losing the only life he knew. He had lived with children, liked car rides, and understood how a house works and how to be a very good boy inside one. Then one day the map changed, and he found himself in a kennel, listening to strange sounds, surrounded by strangers who kept insisting they were friends.Leo disagreed. He ran from gentle hands. He turned down toys. He looked at our best offerings, including chicken, as if we had misunderstood the assignment entirely. So we did the hardest thing - we took a step back.We gave him room, let the silence stretch, let him watch, listen, and conduct his careful little investigations. You could almost see the gears turning. Are they safe? Are they patient? Will they still be here tomorrow?Yes, Leo. Yes, we will.First came the quick snack, grabbed like a secret. Then the pause that lasted a heartbeat longer than yesterday. Then he leaned into an ear rub. Then, as if surprised by his own courage, he climbed into a lap.And just like that, everything was possible again.Today Leo greets us with a wag and a play bow. He says goodbye with soft kisses. He decided that the world didn't end after all; it merely took a detour. The next couch may be different, but it will still be warm. The people may be new, but they will still be his. This is what bravery looks like in a small dog. Not loud. Not flashy. Just the steady decision to try again.Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9 am to noon, including weekends and holidays.Interested?
