Story
Adoption Fee: $375 Age: 4 years Weight: 7.5 lbs. Fostered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Email: bryorkiemom@yahoo.com 5/26/25 - Shelby isn’t making much progress coming out of her shell. Her previous life absolutely took a toll on her. The one saving grace is that she is 50% better than she was in the beginning and eats good and goes outside great now without being scared of the threshold of the door going out or in. She co-exists fine with the other dogs, but does not interact with them. She does watch them for cues on things that normal dogs are used to doing. She still has a ways to go, but we are just proud of her for being able to get where she is now. 2/5/24 - Shelby has completed heartworm treatment and has tested negative. She is a new woman ready to look at applications. 1/7/24 -Ok, I’ll just start off by letting you know that I realize that I am not the most adoptable pup in the world. I really have a fear of humans right now. Some have really worked me over in my lifetime and it’s just not that easy letting my guard down. My sister, Molly, and I were locked in cages since we were puppies. We produced litter after litter to make money for greedy people. We had no contact with humans except to be treated badly which has resulted in our total fear. We also were never brought to the vet, or given heartworm prevention, which has resulted in both Molly and I being heartworm positive. We have started our treatment and received our second round on December 28th. We are doing well for now and not having any complications thank goodness. We are used to our foster mom now, but still don’t like to be picked up by her or anyone. And if anyone new comes over, we will run and hide or freeze in one spot. Seems like it should be easy for us to forget our past when people are trying so hard to be nice and talk sweet to us, but it doesn’t work that way. I’m sure after a long-term relationship with VERY understanding and VERY patient parents, I’ll figure out that you aren’t wanting to hurt me and I’ll come around. Now dogs are a different story. They seem to be my safe haven. So, if you want to adopt me, you must have another dog(s). I also would not hate it if you wanted to adopt Molly and I together, but we can go separately. It’s not that I play with the other dogs, but I need them for comfort, guidance and learning. Since Molly and I have been in our foster home, the other dogs have taught us that the threshold of the back door isn’t scary, so we follow the others in now instead of darting from corner to corner in the back yard. However, I sometimes resort back and want to stay outside and foster mom has to act like she is shutting the door on me to convince me to come in. They are also teaching us when it is breakfast and supper time. We all get excited at this time! Pee pads are another thing we’ve learned. We will also go outside, but still make mistakes. I haven’t graduated to sleeping in the human bed. Molly and I usually sleep together in a dog bed/or on a comforter on the floor in the bedroom where everyone else sleeps. I absolutely love toys and play with them alot. We had another foster in our home recently and she taught me to tear all the toys up, so now that is what I do. But I still love them. I am more scared of things than Molly is. I'm not brave enough to want foster mom to pick me up and definitely don't go up for any pets. I will need a very secure back yard since walking on a harness and leash scare the dickens out of me. I am a knee-jerk reactor and if given the opportunity, would bolt away. In a way, both Molly and I have sweet, but feral personalities. We don’t like it and aren’t proud of it. Foster mom tells us that there are people out there that will still be interested in loving us and giving us all the time in the world to trust and love. We sure hope she is right, but for now, she and her other dogs are doing a really good job of helping us learn this outside world that seems so large and scary. I know what you’re thinking, “Why adopt this dog, she’s hopeless”. Well, this is your chance to really “adopt” and “rescue” a poor lost soul that will in time come around and is literally the meaning of “a diamond in the rough”. I might not greet you at the door with tag wags and licks, I won’t cuddle up next to you on the sofa to watch a movie, and my eyes are usually very wide open like a deer in headlights, but I really deserve another chance at a life that was stolen from me at the hands of inhumane people.

Story
Debo is a male yorkie/shih tzu who was born about 7/2017. He is neutered, up to date on shots and heart worm negative. Debo gets along well with other dogs and cats, but would do best in a home without small children. Debo was saved from doggy jail before his number was up. He is a playful little guy who wants a home to call his own.

Story
Adoption Fee: $250 Age: 8 years Weight: 6 lbs. Fostered in Baton Rouge, LA Email: bryorkiemom@yahoo.com 7/30/25 - Lexi's visit with Internal Medicine at CAVS showed that Lexi is in the early stage of renal disease. She will need to stay on the medicine she is currently on, Benazapril, and stay on her diet of K/D soft and hard mixed. Thank goodness, she LOVES it. With aging, comes medical issues. This is true in humans and animals alike. However, that does not discount the life we have left. Lexi is a vibrant, intelligent, sweetheart of a lady that has as many years left as we all do... Unknown. She definitely does not act or feel as if anything is wrong, so we are not about to tell her any different. With that being said, the only upkeep to stay on top of her condition will be bi-yearly bloodwork, checking the protein in her urine, her creatinine and her albumin levels. Show me a human that does not go to the doctor a little more for preventative check-ups as they get older. Lexi loves the other pups in her foster home, but isn't much on playing. She just loves to cuddle with them. She would like a more calm house that focuses on the kids with four furry legs and enjoys the day going outside when it isn't too hot and watching tv with her foster mom and fur-siblings.' Sleeping in human bed is a must and 100% unconditional love and affection from her humans is a must. Look at that face and tell us that she can't be picky on choosing her next home! 7/21/25 - Lexi was surrendered to YHR because her owners were displaced and could not take care of her any longer. On her initial vet visit, she was very anemic (but was covered with fleas, so that could have been the problem) and her blood and urine testing indicated possible kidney issues. She was started on a kidney diet and Benazapril and showed only mild improvement; so she is being referred to an Internal Med Specialist at Capital Area Veterinary Associates. We are still accessing Lexi's personality and will definitely update soon on her likes, dislikes and her medical status, but for now, we do know that she is an angel. She loves attention, loves to sleep in bed with her owners, eats great, might make a mistake here and there, but for the most part, does her business outside and has a very happy disposition. She doesn't play with any of the other pups in her foster home, but none of them seem to bother her.

Adoption Fee: $400 Age: 3.5 years Weight: 15.2 lbs. Fostered in Baton Rouge, LA Email: bryorkiemom@yahoo.com 11/5/25 - BIO COMING SOON! 11/9/25 - Hi, my name is Sarge and I was surrendered by my family when they realized they made a jump decision in getting me and then did not have time for me. It’s really sad when you think about it. Getting something and then just discarding it like its feelings, safety and life do not matter, all because someone did not think seriously about a decision before they made it. Well, I’m thinking seriously about the family that I choose. See, this time, I have a voice in this choice. So, I guess I need to tell you a little about myself. As I said, my name is Sarge and I am a happy, boisterous, loving, smiling, playing, exploring, existence of a four-legged companion. I’m always up for anything. You want to go walking? Let’s go! Down for a snack and nap? Right up my alley. Want to snuggle in with some popcorn and a movie? Now, you’re talking my language. Want to just go sit in the backyard and enjoy the sunshine and watch the leaves fall from trees? I’m your man. Basically, I’m a 100% all around easy snuggle bunny of a pet. I love sleeping in bed with my humans, I eat with no problem, I’m friendly with all people I meet, I walk well on a harness and leash, I’m not barker, normal inside noises don’t rattle me, I take any medicine fine with a pill pocket and I’m not annoyingly clingy like most yorkies are. I’m not a jumper, so I will need assistance getting on and off the chair, sofa and bed. Foster mom says this is a good thing since I won’t tear an ACL jumping. Low key confession, I probably would jump if I wasn’t overweight. There, I said it. I’m husky, fat, vertically challenged, heavy!! I’m working on it though. I’m trying to eat less, although that’s hard, because I am a chow hound. I’m in a foster home with other dogs smaller than I am. I’m fine with other dogs my size, larger than me and cats. But I will say that the longer I’m here, I get more attached to my foster mom and can try to throw my weight around by growling at the others at times. Mainly during feeding time. So, I will need a parent that will not put up with my jealously and another dog friend that will put me in my place wouldn’t hurt. I’m pretty good with my potty habits, but foster mom has pee pads, so my next home will need those. I won’t lie, mistakes do happen, but no one is perfect. I might pick up a toy here and there, but I don’t play with them. Maybe later I’ll learn that they are fun. So, that’s my story. What’s yours??

Story
Adoption Fee: $350 Fostered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Age: 4 years Weight: 10 lbs. Major Tom is a Yorkie/Schnauzer mix. 5/27/25 - Hey! It's me, Major Tom. Foster mom wanted me to give ya'll an update. I wish I had some new and interesting things to tell you about myself, like I'm not so scared of things and obnoxious any longer, but the truth is, I still am. But one thing I have come to realize as I've gotten older here at my foster home, is that "It's just my personality". I'm terrified of bad weather and foster mom has to put a thunder shirt on me and hold me like a baby. I don't really care for meeting new people. When someone new comes to my house, I bark from afar and if they get up quickly, I sometimes do a "drive by". Foster mom will put a bark collar on me "it isn't really turned on", but it seems to do the trick. I will go lay down or stay nearby, but not bark. I'm not really good with going places because I don't want to be left. When foster mom brings me to foster grandma's house, I spend the whole time raising up on foster mom's legs to be held or just pace nervously. I do like to play with other dogs that are playful, but at first, I'm usually obnoxious and growl and bark at them until some time passes and I can get to know them and will then play. Unfortunately, I'm a talker. So, when playing, or just wanting to communicate with foster mom or dad, I have a deep, loud noise/growl that I use. I'm not being mean, it's just my normal, happy voice. Bad thing is other people and some dogs, don't understand it unless they have been around me a while. I love playing with toys, but by play, I mean eat off the legs, arms, nose and ears, and then take the stuffing out. I have a blast. It's a good thing that we have baskets full of toys around here. I do eat very well and know how to sit. I'm also a great bed partner and sleep right by my human sharing the pillow. I'm very smart and will use pee pads or, get ready, actually go to the door and scratch. I know, foster mom said I'm the only foster she has had that has ever done this. I guess with all my personality flaws, this one should win me major points. But, I would assume when moving to a new home, I'd be so scared and nervous, I probably will have mistakes. I absolutely love a bath and to be blow-dried. What can I say, I like to be pretty! I know, I'm not the furry companion that everyone is looking for with all my quirks, but I promise, I am a good boy. It's just hard for me to trust and love. I will be honest, I will need a mom and/or dad that will be ok taking their time with me and not get mad at me for my "Dennis the Menace" ways. I need someone with a stronger personality, but not so strong that I tinkle myself. Oh, by the way, I do this if I get scared too quickly. Guess I better stop now. I'm sure I've scared you enough. For what it's worth, I'm up for adoption if you think I'm what you are looking for, or just feel sorry enough for me that you can't pass me up! I'm funny too!! 10/23/24 – Major is still his quirky, loving, obnoxious, smart, diamond-in-the-ruff self. He is such a smart dog. Currently at his foster home, he is potty trained. And his foster mom doesn’t take this sentence lightly. We never promise a dog won’t make mistakes. He will use a pad if he has to go and his humans aren’t paying attention, but does his business outside. When you talk to him, he turns his head from side to side as if he is truly listening and understanding what you are saying. He is the biggest baby you will ever meet. He is scare of most things, which is where his obnoxious behavior comes out. He isn’t great with new people and if someone comes over, he will bark and act as if he is not scared, but is actually uncomfortable with new people and situations. It will definitely take a little while for his new owners to win him over, but once you do, he is like glue. His people are his life. After you work through the “I’m a killer, but I will tinkle myself if you come near me” exterior. 4/14/24 - Major Tom thought it was about time he updated everyone on what was going on with him since he has been in his foster home. He is a sweet boy, but does have fear issues with new people. When he first meets someone, he will bark at them as if he is scared and trying to protect himself. Sometimes he might even go hide if meeting someone new at his foster home where he is secure. But once introduced and comfortable, he will love unconditionally. He loves men and woman, but definitely is more comfortable with woman. In his foster home, he plays and loves on foster mom and dad, but will submissive tinkle if foster dad picks him up too quickly. He would benefit from a young playful dog in the home as he loves to play and can be aggravating to dogs that don't want to play or have his energy level. He loves to play with toys and run and play chase with other dogs. He is not very comfortable walking on a harness and leash, so a secure fenced yard is a must for him. He is a very good sleeping companion and adores laying right next to his humans either on top or under the covers. Major does well at the groomer and is great for his weekly bath and blow dry for his foster parents. He doesn't like a chaotic, busy or loud home, so he would probably do best in a home without children. He is a smart baby. His foster mom taught him to sit for a treat in just 1 day. So he has potential to learn more basic commands. Major is a happy little guy that did not learn a lot of socialization as a young pup and that has resulted in him being a little socially uncomfortable and timid, but he loves his people 100% and is a great pup. He has enjoyed living at his foster home, but wouldn't object to starting his life with his forever family. Since he is scared around new people and will need time to adjust, visits will probably be beneficial in his transition when getting adopted. So, he will need to be adopted in Louisiana to make sure that all goes well. If you feel that you are the one for Major Tom, we are accepting applications now! 11/22/21 - Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! The name is Major Tom, but you can call me Major. Or, you can call me Tommy Boy. Or you can call me Baby. Just call me in a sweet voice, because I love that. I was surrendered by my previous owner because I was too much to handle. My last home did not have enough energy outlets for me and I really need exercise and also needed more socialization. Not getting this resulted in me playing too rough snapping and biting at my mom. She did what was best and surrendered me to YHR. I explained to my foster mom that I didn’t mean it and she said that it’s just puppy antics that needed to be redirected. I do have a very submissive and fearful personality. I’m afraid when meeting new people and will sometimes submissive tinkle. Other times I will try to overcompensate for my fear by barking and growling. Foster mom tells everyone to just sit down and let me get to know them and come to them on my terms. She told me that she understands my issues and we are going to slowly work on them. She’s cool. I’m timid around other dogs too. I’m just learning to play with them a little because there is a Shih-tzu in my foster home that is trying to show me the ropes. So having another dog in the home would be a plus so I can pickup ques from them and it helps me trust humans too. I just don’t need to be around any that are too rough because it scares me. Once I trust you, I’m definitely my human’s dog and I will follow you everywhere and can even get protective of you. I f foster mom and I are in the bed and foster dad walks in, I will bark and growl at him until he comes over and talks sweet to me and pets me. Foster mom said that I cannot go to a home with children of any age or one that is too chaotic because I get overly stimulated easily. Exercise, i.e., walking, playing fetch or chase with my humans, etc. will help with this and help me to gain confidence. I know I’m not doing the best at making myself sound like a gem to be adopted, but I am actually a great boy. I come when called, sleep right next to my human all night perfectly, and loves to give and receive love and affection. I’m learning to play with toys and it is the bomb! I’m pretty good in the potty department as long as you let me out enough and stay out with me If you think you will sneak off and go inside, forget it. I will run back in too and do my business inside. So, it’s up to you if you want to stay out with me, or clean up. Lol I’m not a springy fellow. I’m actually just starting to walk up the steps/benches to the bed. But I still like to be picked up and put in the bed. I will come down the steps though. Foster mom says it is just adorable to see me raise up on the side of the bed and scratch to be picked up. I guess since I’m bigger, she just assumes I’d be able to jump up and down the steps with ease. While I’m continuing to get love and attention here and learning discipline and how to trust, if you think I have the potential to be a part of your home, please apply. Remember, I will need a quiet home with parents that will exercise me regularly, no children, and another non-rowdy dog to learn from and play with. Don’t let my shortcomings scare you off, I’m quite handsome and a great catch. Or so says foster mom and she wouldn’t lie to me. I'll be spending Thanksgiving with my foster family, but maybe by Christmas, I can have a family of my own. Major Tom signing off! 11/12/21 - BIO COMING SOON!
