Story
Yuji ("brave second son") is a 2-year-old male (neutered) American Akita. He currently lives in a suburban area with myself, my husband, and our 6-year-old son. We are looking to find him a new home based on a few behavioral and breed-specific behaviors that we are no longer able to manage well. Yuji has a confident and dominant personality. Like most Akitas, he is loyal, silly, and loving with his family, but will show dominance, which is an issue with our young son. He is wary of strangers, and has shown resource guarding on occasion. Yuji is crate trained, housebroken, and well-behaved in the house. We have had success with trainers (our trainer is offering free sessions to Yuji's adopters!), but Yuji will need an experienced owner that knows working breeds. Yuji is smart and knows his commands, including "place." He walks well on leash, but is reactive (especially to loud trucks, bicycles, and runners). Fee is listed to encourage well-meaning adopters.

Story
Cassie's owner was  homeless and realized that he had to give her up for her sake.  She was frightened in the shelter initially, but warmed up to the staff fairly quickly.  When our volunteer went to meet her, all Cassie wanted to do was sit next to her and be petted.  She will not be available until after she is spayed in Mid-April.  We are still getting to know Cassie better so  stay tuned for more info.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 27, 2024, 12:06 am

Story
Akai camd from a shelter in NC.  Here is what the shelter said about her: 'This beautiful girl is Akaie. She has been fostered out twice to potential adopters from our shelter but returned both times, as neither potential adopter was familiar with the breed and she was “too much” for them. There was no mention of aggression or anything dealing with behavior, just that she was too strong for one’s wife to walk while he is at work and then the second foster read information on the breed and decided she was not a match for her. We would love to find an Akita Rescue that could pull her from our facility and find the right family for her. ' The shelter workers adored her. Here is what we know about her from her time with us.  She is great with people.  Very particular about what dogs she likes.  Has a fairly high prey drive, so no small dogs or cats. She is at our kennel.  As with all Akitas, she does not like to potty in her run.  Update: Akai has been in a foster home for about 3 weeks. She’s been to the groomers and the vet, no issues with anyone there. She will sit, down and dance when you ask to. She mostly walks well with minor corrections.  She is housebroken and the foster says she is a gem. She has been to the foster’s place of business (store), and has been okay with most of the customers.  She is not crazy about men in baseball caps. A contractor waring a hat met her and when he held out his hand for her to sniff, she growled.  Once he removed his hat, she was fine. One man walked into the store and she disliked him so much she had to be out of the store.Sh barked intensely at him.  Akai needs a home with some Akita experience. Story
Balto was in Alabama but came to us by way of California. The shelter in Alabama contacted the California rescue who contacted us.  Balto had been running as a stray and was attacked by a pack of 6 other dogs.  The shelter had him treated and healed.  They were desperate to find a rescue group for him. Luckily we had room available.  We  made arrangements with Hood's Pet Transport to get him from Alabama to Virginia.  A volunteer met the transport at 2 am, overnighted him, and then delivered him to our kennel. All the shelter personnel and vet personnel adored him.  Here is what the volunteer who overnighted him said 'Drop off successful. It was a hard good bye because he has so much potential and is a handsome boy! Generally, he did great with our cat. Balto had some interest and excitement with seeing the cat, but once the cat ran away, Balto didn’t chase after her. Our female lab did okay…there were 3 snaps that our dog instigated (she’s used to being queen bee in the house and was scared of Balto’s size). For the most part, Balto and our lab were okay in the same room together, as long as he didn’t get too excited and invade her space.  No signs of food aggression, and he had great potty training habits.  House manners have a long way to go. He did GREAT in the crate all night. No whining or attempt to escape, which was appreciated. He still has the puppy tendencies to nibble on your hand and tried to nibble on a dog bed. Therefore, he lost dog bed privileges. He did his best to play with a toy we gave him, and my boyfriend start teaching him the fetch concept. The car ride was very easy. He did great in the car, and didn’t get sick. He even laid down and chilled out a bit.'Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 27, 2024, 12:06 am

Story
Mimi’s owner contacted rescue looking for a kennel that wasn’t too expensive to board her.  Not quite sure why she wanted to board her.  The owner had moved from a house to an apartment because of a divorce. The apartment allowed pets.  We gave her the names of several kennels, but two months later, Mimi ended up in a local shelter. She was frantic to get out of the shelter. Now we know why. Mimi does not do well confined.  We initially crate a dog when she is going into a foster home until we find out if they are destructive when left alone, how they will deal with any resident pets, etc.   We found out that she became frantic in the crate, even with midday walks from another volunteer. The long side of the crate was parallel to the windows, but all she did was put her butt against that side and ram her head on the other in an attempt to open the door.  She was gated off in the kitchen with an extra tall, metal  baby gate that is fastened to the wall.  Mimi started being destructive in the kitchen: pulling things off the counter and destroying them, pooing and peeing, chewing the walls around the gate, pulling apart the gate. When her walker arrived, she was always stressed.  After consulting with our vet, we put Mimi on Prozac. There was a time when we scoffed at the idea of putting a dog on drugs, but after research, found it helped many dogs.  With the anxiety under control, she has learned new behaviors.  She can be crated now when her foster goes to work. She is happy to see her walker mid-day. After walking and some scratching time, she will go right back in her crate.  The joyful dog we caught glimpses of is now present most of the time.  If humans can have chemical deficiencies in their brains and be helped by drugs, why not dogs?  She may have to be on Prozac the rest of her life, a small price to pay for the lovely girl we see now. What a HUGE difference it has made in her behavior !!  .   Although the owner said she was good with cats and rabbits, that turned out to not necessarily be true.  She chased the foster home’s kitties, but not sure of her intent. The kitties stay in a safe area while we are further evaluating.  Since she has calmed down, she ignores the kitties more often than not.  Mimi is not crazy about car rides. Getting her in the car can be a challenge.  She is fine once in the car, but at times refuses to get out.  Mimi appears to have never had any restrictions or rules and is having some difficulty realizing that she is not the queen.  She is learning to walk well on leash. On the plus side, she is a very joyful dog, who is very food oriented. She loves to “talk” to you, especially upon your arrival.  She will grab a toy, wiggling around with it while telling you about her day. Mimi is a tweenie; part American Akita, part Japanese Akita.  She has the stockier build of the American Akita and the markings of a Japanese Akita.  We knew there was a good dog in there and we found her!!!    Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 27, 2024, 12:06 am

Story
Meet Ghost and Roxy. Ghost is on the left and Roxy is on the right. They are new additions to Armac. We were contacted by a very nice lady named Christy. Her husband had been visiting a friend. While he was there the friend's neighbor came over and asked to borrow the friend's truck. The friend asked why and the guy told him he was going to take his two Akitas and dump them in the woods. At which point Christie's husband said oh no no. I will take them. And he did. He called Christy coming home to let her know that he had two dogs in the car with him. They already have a dog that's a Schnauzer poodle mix. The last time the husband brought a dog home unexpectedly it attacked their dog. So she was a little apprehensive. But these are really nice dogs. They got them just before Thanksgiving. And advertised them on NextDoor. She was appalled at the people who wanted these dogs. She realized that She was unable to vet the people the way they should be. She contacted her sister who does humane work in another state. Her sister suggested contacting Akita rescue. She originally contacted a different Akita rescue who told her to contact us because we were in her area. Christy has had some serious surgery lately and really needed to have the dogs gone because taking care of them was a lot for her in her current condition. I went to meet them with Annette, one of our volunteers, on Monday. These were two really, really nice dogs. Roxy has a little more energy, is probably the more dominant and outgoing of the two. Ghost was a little more reticent although he warmed up very quickly.  I talked with Thomas and Alyssa, who are a foster home for us and they agreed to take Roxy the female. I had already made up my mind that I was going to keep Ghost and foster him here. But Annette called and let me know that she would be happy to foster him. He kind of won everybody's heart. We asked Christy's husband if he could get any more information from the previous owner reference vet records, anything, about the dogs. We got puppy pictures and a date of birth from the breeders paperwork. He sent them via text. This is what her foster said about her: She was soooo good and they all just adore her at the vet.  She has been incredible since she has been here.  She does know a few commands, sit, shake and we are working on down.  She is a counter surfer.  Totally housebroken.  Loves to come and go through the dog door (she is done being in heat).  She is a bit of a puller on a lead and that is something we are working on too.  She knows the command 'stop' and will do so immediately.  She prefers to sleep in bed with people and we'll get her out of that soon, but in the meantime, she is a super sweet snuggle bug. Roxy  will be available once she is spayed and has recovered. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 27, 2024, 12:06 am
