Story
Yuji ("brave second son") is a 2-year-old male (neutered) American Akita. He currently lives in a suburban area with myself, my husband, and our 6-year-old son. We are looking to find him a new home based on a few behavioral and breed-specific behaviors that we are no longer able to manage well. Yuji has a confident and dominant personality. Like most Akitas, he is loyal, silly, and loving with his family, but will show dominance, which is an issue with our young son. He is wary of strangers, and has shown resource guarding on occasion. Yuji is crate trained, housebroken, and well-behaved in the house. We have had success with trainers (our trainer is offering free sessions to Yuji's adopters!), but Yuji will need an experienced owner that knows working breeds. Yuji is smart and knows his commands, including "place." He walks well on leash, but is reactive (especially to loud trucks, bicycles, and runners). Fee is listed to encourage well-meaning adopters.

Cassie's owner was  homeless and realized that he had to give her up for her sake.  She was frightened in the shelter initially, but warmed up to the staff fairly quickly.  When our volunteer went to meet her, all Cassie wanted to do was sit next to her and be petted.  She will not be available until after she is spayed in Mid-April.  We are still getting to know Cassie better so  stay tuned for more info.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 27, 2024, 12:06 am

Story
Akai camd from a shelter in NC.  Here is what the shelter said about her: 'This beautiful girl is Akaie. She has been fostered out twice to potential adopters from our shelter but returned both times, as neither potential adopter was familiar with the breed and she was “too much” for them. There was no mention of aggression or anything dealing with behavior, just that she was too strong for one’s wife to walk while he is at work and then the second foster read information on the breed and decided she was not a match for her. We would love to find an Akita Rescue that could pull her from our facility and find the right family for her. ' The shelter workers adored her. Here is what we know about her from her time with us.  She is great with people.  Very particular about what dogs she likes.  Has a fairly high prey drive, so no small dogs or cats. She is at our kennel.  As with all Akitas, she does not like to potty in her run.  Update: Akai has been in a foster home for about 3 weeks. She’s been to the groomers and the vet, no issues with anyone there. She will sit, down and dance when you ask to. She mostly walks well with minor corrections.  She is housebroken and the foster says she is a gem. She has been to the foster’s place of business (store), and has been okay with most of the customers.  She is not crazy about men in baseball caps. A contractor waring a hat met her and when he held out his hand for her to sniff, she growled.  Once he removed his hat, she was fine. One man walked into the store and she disliked him so much she had to be out of the store.Sh barked intensely at him.  Akai needs a home with some Akita experience. Story
Balto was in Alabama but came to us by way of California. The shelter in Alabama contacted the California rescue who contacted us.  Balto had been running as a stray and was attacked by a pack of 6 other dogs.  The shelter had him treated and healed.  They were desperate to find a rescue group for him. Luckily we had room available.  We  made arrangements with Hood's Pet Transport to get him from Alabama to Virginia.  A volunteer met the transport at 2 am, overnighted him, and then delivered him to our kennel. All the shelter personnel and vet personnel adored him.  Here is what the volunteer who overnighted him said 'Drop off successful. It was a hard good bye because he has so much potential and is a handsome boy! Generally, he did great with our cat. Balto had some interest and excitement with seeing the cat, but once the cat ran away, Balto didn’t chase after her. Our female lab did okay…there were 3 snaps that our dog instigated (she’s used to being queen bee in the house and was scared of Balto’s size). For the most part, Balto and our lab were okay in the same room together, as long as he didn’t get too excited and invade her space.  No signs of food aggression, and he had great potty training habits.  House manners have a long way to go. He did GREAT in the crate all night. No whining or attempt to escape, which was appreciated. He still has the puppy tendencies to nibble on your hand and tried to nibble on a dog bed. Therefore, he lost dog bed privileges. He did his best to play with a toy we gave him, and my boyfriend start teaching him the fetch concept. The car ride was very easy. He did great in the car, and didn’t get sick. He even laid down and chilled out a bit.'Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 27, 2024, 12:06 am

Freya This pretty lady is a sweet soul. She loves her people. She will definitely show you lots of love and attention. She loves kids and would make a great play partner. She is very dog and cat friendly. Although if your cat is runner or spooked easily, she will chase for a fun activity. Freya can jump high, so she requires a yard with a minimum of a 6 ft fence. She would do well with lots of room to roam and play. This chick is up for any adventure, as long as she gets to spend time with her people, her heart will be happy. She will be fully vetted, microchipped and is available to you via ground transport.

This curious, independent, and all-around pup-tastic pooch loves exploring nature and meeting new creatures. Balto would do best in a home that can give him the attention and patience to help him be the best dog ever. Happily, he is a quick learner. If you're looking for a loyal, affectionate new lifelong friend, Balto could be what you've been missing! To learn more about Aspen, please email Jody.kulstad@lostdogrescue.org Why take a trip to Aspen when you can bring Aspen home with you? Beyond his incredible good looks and sharp blue eyes, Aspen is a bundle of energy. This distinguished gentleman is ready to play any chance he gets. As huskies do, he needs his exercise and is happy to help you exceed your step goal! Walk around the block? Sure! Even better, how about a 3-mile hike in the woods? 3 miles? Let's make it 5! And if a pup cup is at the end, all the better for this fluffy fellow. When he's not itching for a walk, he is calm and gentle with just a touch of sass balanced with good manners. He is a strong boy and will do best with a husky-familiar family that can provide him with mental and physical stimulation. He'd also do better in a home with older kids; he loves hanging with adults and other dogs. Aspen is a really good boy with lots of love to share. He is ready to join you on all your adventures!
