Story
Mochi is a beautiful, healthy 4 year old mini American Eskimo. He is extremely loving, intelligent, playful, vocal, & a little mischievous! Whenever you come home he will shower you with kisses to tell you how much he missed you. He loves tearing apart toys to find the squeakers inside! He has severe anxiety that manifests as resource guarding, stranger & dog reactivity, & sleep startle. NB: Bite History. He has improved significantly with medication & positive reinforcement (R+) training but still has a ways to go. I’m looking for an adopter who would be dedicated to working on his training, has a yard for him to play in, & is located somewhere rural or suburban. He needs at least 1 hour of exercise per day & plenty of mental stimulation. He should only be left alone for 4-ish hours at a time & would thrive with structure & routine. Adopter must be very patient, experienced with dog behavior issues & R+ training, and devoted to loving Mochi unconditionally through his ups & downs.

Story
Liza was born on June 14, 2023 and weighs about 35 pounds. Liza's story is a bit confusing and sad but she has the rest of her life to catch up and she will flourish in the right home, a home willing to work with her.  Joyful Rescues was made aware of an elderly couple that had an accidental (as accidental as it can be with three unaltered Eskies in a home) litter of Eskies born last June that have only lived in the basement of a home of a very elderly couple who used to show/breed Eskies.  A gentleman who had purchased an Eskie from them years ago happened to communicate with them and was told of the plight of the three remaining pups from the last litter.  He loves his dog and loves the breed and made it his mission to help the couple and the pups.  He urged the couple to bring them upstairs and allow them in the yard and they did so and then he reached out to area rescues to get the pups out of the situation.  A local rescue took one pup and a Joyful staff happened to be going into this city the following day so we took the remaining two.  The woman did love the pups and they loved her, but were very shy to the visitors.  We carried them to the car where they rode silently in a crate for 1 1/2 hours.  There was some expected car sickness and we need to emphasis here that they had never, not ever, left this home or saw anyone but the elderly lady until this time as the man couldn't get down the cellar stairs safely.  They are extremely bonded and some may feel they need to stay together.  This is not the case and they must go on to their new lives without each other to reach their full potential.  They MUST go to a home with another dog that is happy, social, and well adjusted and they MUST have a secure fence to run and play in as for the foreseeable future at least they are extreme flight risks.  They must not go to a home with hyper, noisy, little kids.      The Adoption Fee for this dog is $500.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a 'complete' pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY.    Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 25 YEARS OF AGE TO ADOPT A DOG FROM JOYFUL RESCUES   We keep our pet list as up-to-date as possible. As soon as a pet is adopted, it is removed from the list. If a pet is still showing, it is still available for adoption.   Can't Adopt Me?  SPONSOR ME Look for the Link 'Special Instructions to Seller' if you want to note a particular pet Before you seek to adopt a pet from Joyful Rescues, please read our Pet Adoption page http://www.joyfulrescues.org/pet_adoption.html. Story
Petite was born on June 14, 2023 and weighs about 25 pounds. Petite came to us with the name of small as she was the smallest in the litter.  Her story is a bit confusing and sad but she has the rest of her life to catch up and she will flourish in the right home, a home willing to work with her. We cat-tested Petite and she had no idea what to think of it and was slightly frightened which caused her to bark at the kitty at which point we said NO! and Petite immediately stopped.  We are going to say that she will be fine in a home with kitties as long as her new human makes sure to not allow barking.  Once she understands that kitties are not scary and it makes her humans upset if she barks at them I would expect her to come to love her 4 legged friend. Photo of Maeum

Maeum

American Eskimo Dog/Spitz (Unknown Type, Small)

Male, Young
Bayside, NY
Size
(when grown) Small 25 lbs (11 kg) or less
Details
Good with dogs, Good with cats,
Story
Name: 마음 (Maeum) Age: Estimated 3 years old Gender: Male Weight: 13 lbs Breed: Mixed breed Neutered: Neutered (recovered from heartworm) Vaccination: Completed 4th round Relationship with Adults: Maeum is a bit fearful of all adults, but he particularly loves female humans. He has experienced trauma from male humans, so he needs more time to build trust with them. He's been living in a foster home for 8 months, and he's still afraid of men, but with patience, he will likely adjust well. Relationship with Children: Maeum is scared of children as they have thrown stones at him in the past. However, he doesn't reject their touch and can get along with children in the same household. Relationship with Other Dogs: He is not very interested in other dogs and can be fearful of both large and small dogs. Sometimes he may show interest in bigger dogs if they have a similar body language, but caution is advised as he's still learning social skills. Relationship with Cats: Maeum is also scared of cats but doesn't pay much attention to them. He is a considerate and gentle dog, so he may get along well with cats once he's familiar with them. House Training: Initially, Maeum may do some marking until he fully adjusts, but currently, he has no bathroom accidents. He tends to lift his leg and urinate, so using longer pee pads against the wall is a good idea. Energy Level: He is extremely gentle and timid, not prone to accidents or mischief. He is quite fearful of loud noises and toys that make noise. Separation Anxiety/Barking: Maeum has some separation anxiety because he loves human interaction. He may show signs of it in the first few minutes but can wait quietly when left alone. He rarely barks, except when he's happy to see people. Affection and Petting: He loves being petted and cuddled. Walking: Maeum enjoys walks and walks calmly. He may be uncomfortable in unfamiliar places or around loud noises, especially when children are playing with balls nearby. Escape Possibility: Maeum doesn't try to leave the side of those he trusts (typically females). There's very little chance of him running away, but caution is advised when outside. Rescue Story: Maeum spent a long time as a stray dog, living in a large open space with other dogs. He endured harsh weather conditions, facing extreme cold in winter and scorching sun in summer. He had no shelter and had to deal with mosquito swarms every evening. Despite this, he greeted people who came to feed him, but some cruel individuals cut his leash and chased him away. A few days later, he was found at a shelter, rescued, and brought to safety. He's an incredibly sweet dog despite the hardships he's faced. Please apply at www.welcomepawsrescue.org. This pet is currently in Korea but can fly to Lax, JFK, DFW, Chicago, SFO, SeaTac, DC, Boston, ATL, Vancouver and Toronto upon the adoption. Please note that Maeum's past experiences have left him with some fears and anxieties, so it's essential to provide him with a patient and loving environment to help him heal and adjust.
