Story
Brutus is a stunning boy with lots of strength. He's playful, goofy, and a big sweetie! He is unfortunately living his life confined to a bedroom, hoping someone can give him another chance at life. This sweet boy was surrendered 2 years ago because his owners decided to move without him. He was luckily adopted and has been very loved since then, but now he has run into another situation through no fault of his own. Brutus had a child with special needs move into his house. Although he's shown no aggression and has not had any issues with the child, his owner is concerned about the child not understanding how to interact with Brutus and therefore has to keep him separated. Instead of Brutus coming back to the shelter again to live in a kennel, his owner is keeping him until he can find a new home. It's not his owners fault and he is trying to do what's best for everyone, but unfortunately Brutus is suffering because of it. He isn't getting the exercise or attention he needs living his life in one bedroom, and he desperately deserves another chance at a family. He is a big boy with an even bigger heart, sweet as can be, and dog friendly. He has gained 15 lbs just since the recent change in his lifestyle, weighing almost 100 lbs now. He needs a family committed to helping him lose weight, and providing both the mental stimulation and physical exercise that he needs. He would benefit from some training to help him work on his leash manners as he was in a home that used an invisible fence, so he wasn't leash trained. A dog-savvy owner would be best for Brutus, as well. Please consider coming to Brutus's rescue and showing him what forever really means. He's ready for someone to give him the permanent home he deserves 🤎 Primary Color: Blue Brindle Weight: 94 Age: 3yrs 4mths 1wks

CheeriO Mate! This kid is ready to leave here and go sit on your sofa. We often hear folks say some dogs are aloof and don't connect right away. Well, we'd like to introduce CheeriO who is one of our most engaging dogs. Hi Folks!CheeriO here. They said I should tell you about myself. So here it is: I like to gets my business done right away on walks and spend the rest of the time trying to get you to look at me. I like head scratches, ear scratches, belly rubs, hugs, kisses. Sometimes I don't even want to go far on walks. I'd rather sit in your lap. I had folks before looking after me, they would let me sit outside on the porch and stuff. Sometimes I like to scratch my back on stuff. I duck under fences to get a good scratch on. But if you can scratch my back, I'd like that a lot.l better. These people here say I'm small but I have big love to give. I love hanging out with these other dogs here. I really like to check out the chicks. Everyone here is nice and they give me food. They say I should have more food and that's fine with me. I'd rather not stay here. Can I come and live with you? Well then, think it over. CheeriO ! Story
Ivy is here spending her puppyhood in the kennels. Her previous owners did not spend much time working with her. Her attention span was not developed and is short but she is very smart, loving and playful.Ivy is a high energy teenager now. Weighing 50 pounds, she likes to run and be free. She likes to jump for joy. As with most teenagers, she does not like having a boss. She is passionate about all she does. She needs a smart dog family of hoomans to give her boundaries, training and love with a super sized serving of patience on the side. Ivy would do well with an active family. Running? You bet!!Hiking ?? Sign her up!! Line dancing✅ agility✅ rally✅ she is ready to go! Once she can stick the landing with a dedicated family who will not give up on her, the possibilities are endless for this happy girl. She has recently been visited an obedience trainer. She has walked well with her and has shown improvement. She likes to engage with other dogs, but she can be a lot for them to handle. She will probably want to be the boss of other animals and may not tolerate 2nd place. Her forever family will need to be firm with her and consistent with training and they will need to let her know they are in charge and she is not. She may not be suited for first time dog owners as she has a big personality and will need hoomans experienced with high energy dogs to work with her. She is not aggressive just very energetic with all life forms. She is very entertaining to watch. She loves to run around and dive into the play yard pools...even in January! She is tons of fun with a toy, and that can help redirect her attention when she starts getting overly excited. Reviews from her fan club:"Ivy is a very smart dog, she has puppy energy."Chris Kennel staff and Meet and Greet specialist. "Ivy has a sweet soul and a great sense of humor. I enjoy spending time with her. She plays hard and loves her toys. She will be a great dog once she can get out of the kennel environment and finish being a puppy in a loving home that will help her be her best self through training."Terza (volunteer)Ivy considers her breed combo to be: part German peppered Dog, part Great Plane, and part Doberman pitcher🤣 check out those ears!! Story
Happy's Happy and fun all the time. 😄 He was given his name by the Animal Control Officer who brought him in and walks him regularly. Happy likes to brag to the other dogs that he has an in with management. He loves walking and sniffing and listens well to strong leaders. Happy needs to work on his leash manners, a few circles and changing directions should cut down on the pulling. He walks well on a training collar. He is easily excitable and would not do well with little dogs or cats, boy are they fun to chase!!Happy is one of our residents that is desperate to get out of his kennel. He needs more interaction with people and exercise to get all of his wiggles out. He doesn't like it when his volunteer friends have to leave him in his kennel. The loud busy kennel life keeps him wound up all day. He just wants to relax. He weighs 59 pounds and is a very handsome fella. Happy's story is one that breaks our heart. He was left behind, abandoned in a yard with another dog, when his folks moved, but dogs are so forgiving and resilient, can't nothing bring him down. He has moved on and is ready to devote himself to someone worthy of his love. He's a blank slate, which makes it a challenge for people to connect with. With time and TLC Happy will open up again and bond with his new best friend who can mold him into the dog they want! Happy is ready to let the good times roll with you!!Happy has a few favorite volunteers that adore him. They come almost everyday to walk him and work with him. BFF volunteer Cheryl had this to say about Happy:"He is a strong boy, but not too big. He can pull, but I'm able to handle him. He mostly ignores the bigger dogs. He listens to me. I walk him almost every day. He's still young and needs training. I always carry a pocket full of treats for training reinforcement. He lets me hook him up very easy, and actually goes by the other dogs really easy. I find it easy to get him in and out of his kennel. He sits for treats and looks to you for direction. He does like to run, so I run with him some. But he also loves to stop and sniff. So, once he gets out and does his business, he is usually a mix of running, stopping and sniffing and sitting for treats. He will sometimes pick up a big stick, or a plastic bottle, or, today he picked up an orange someone discarded and carried it in his mouth like a ball. He makes me laugh."Come and spend some time with Happy and take in a few good sniffs. Happy needs you! And maybe you need his happy self in your life too! Story
Breezy Bugs is another one of our Golden Girls. She channels her inner Dorothy character aka Bea Arthur and is ready with a wise crack when you walk by her kennel. If you dare not take her out, you better be ready to hear some jibber jabber from her. Just like Dorothy, she has had ups and downs in her life. She came to HSWC emaciated, thought to be wandering on her own for a while. She now weighs 56 pounds and can still gain more to be her best self. It doesn't seem like she has had a good home but she is spunky and spirited and ready to make the best of any situation. She walks well, seems to mingle in social situations well. She likes things her way, and loves treats. She needs to be in a loving and patient home. Ages10+ for homes with kids. With young people that know how to give a dog space and not interfere during meal time or snacks. Breezy has not had a steady flow of food in her life so she will always be anxious to gobble those yummy treats. New friends need to be aware that since coming to HSWC the staff and volunteers have been walking by her kennel and giving her treats through the gate. Be cautious with hands coming toward her face because she now expects those fingers to have treats in them. She is well mannered And is looking for love in all the right places now!! Hopefully with a comfy dog bed and an all day buffet. She is a beautiful girl who has lots of life left to live and needs a companion to enjoy things with. She does not need a long walk. She is quick to get her potty done and circle on back inside to her comfy bunk. Ready to enjoy popcorn and a Golden Girls marathon and snuggle up to her forever person. Her heart is true, she's a pal and a confidant. Come and visit her and you will see she will tell you thank you for being a friend. Primary Color: Brown Weight: 56.4 Age: 9yrs 4mths 0wks

I love it in there!my foxter pop calls me well mannered. and blah blah something about Medium energy.Comments from Fendi's Foster family:Adorable foster dog seeks permanent patient home filled with snacks....hugs... kisses... and luxurious spa days. Fendi can be a bit shy but she is making great improvements. slow introductions are best and she does better with her friends around. Really comfortable with two of her foster siblings . Usually warms up to new critters within a few minutes but we recommend going slowly and giving her her own space. Hobbies include:Grasshopper leaps of joy. Dashing here, there and everywhere.Licking champ, Snoring, Toy collecting, Ball chasing and loves chew bones.💫Strengths:sweet, affectionate, well mannered. playful, gentle, goofy...well hilarious really. Ok with dogs. and Ok with cats.Content in her crate during work days, not destructive at all, can handle separation. Lively play mate but not high energy. 32 pounds.🐾Things we are working on:Confidence: she has been to two events and now loves meeting people. Learning sit and other basic obedience skills. Learning leash walking. She is a delightful foster dog. No problems at all.She does well with easy going dogs that do not jump all over her and get in her face right away. She likes checking out cats but does not really bother them. Please schedule a meet and greet with the office and the foster family to meet this delightful gal. She will melt your heart!
