Story
Brutus is a stunning boy with lots of strength. He's playful, goofy, and a big sweetie! He is unfortunately living his life confined to a bedroom, hoping someone can give him another chance at life. This sweet boy was surrendered 2 years ago because his owners decided to move without him. He was luckily adopted and has been very loved since then, but now he has run into another situation through no fault of his own. Brutus had a child with special needs move into his house. Although he's shown no aggression and has not had any issues with the child, his owner is concerned about the child not understanding how to interact with Brutus and therefore has to keep him separated. Instead of Brutus coming back to the shelter again to live in a kennel, his owner is keeping him until he can find a new home. It's not his owners fault and he is trying to do what's best for everyone, but unfortunately Brutus is suffering because of it. He isn't getting the exercise or attention he needs living his life in one bedroom, and he desperately deserves another chance at a family. He is a big boy with an even bigger heart, sweet as can be, and dog friendly. He has gained 15 lbs just since the recent change in his lifestyle, weighing almost 100 lbs now. He needs a family committed to helping him lose weight, and providing both the mental stimulation and physical exercise that he needs. He would benefit from some training to help him work on his leash manners as he was in a home that used an invisible fence, so he wasn't leash trained. A dog-savvy owner would be best for Brutus, as well. Please consider coming to Brutus's rescue and showing him what forever really means. He's ready for someone to give him the permanent home he deserves ūü§é Primary Color: Blue Brindle Weight: 92 Age: 3yrs 5mths 3wks

CheeriO Mate! This kid is ready to leave here and go sit on your sofa. We often hear folks say some dogs are aloof and don't connect right away. Well, we'd like to introduce CheeriO who is one of our most engaging dogs. Hi Folks!CheeriO here. They said I should tell you about myself. So here it is: I like to gets my business done right away on walks and spend the rest of the time trying to get you to look at me. I like head scratches, ear scratches, belly rubs, hugs, kisses. Sometimes I don't even want to go far on walks. I'd rather sit in your lap. I had folks before looking after me, they would let me sit outside on the porch and stuff. Sometimes I like to scratch my back on stuff. I duck under fences to get a good scratch on. But if you can scratch my back, I'd like that a lot.l better. These people here say I'm small but I have big love to give. I love hanging out with these other dogs here. I really like to check out the chicks. Everyone here is nice and they give me food. They say I should have more food and that's fine with me. I'd rather not stay here. Can I come and live with you? Well then, think it over. CheeriO ! Story
Ivy is here spending her puppyhood in the kennels. Her previous owners did not spend much time working with her. Her attention span was not developed and is short but she is very smart, loving and playful.Ivy is a high energy teenager now. Weighing 50 pounds, she likes to run and be free. She likes to jump for joy. As with most teenagers, she does not like having a boss. She is passionate about all she does. She needs a smart dog family of hoomans to give her boundaries, training and love with a super sized serving of patience on the side. Ivy would do well with an active family. Running? You bet!!Hiking ?? Sign her up!! Line dancing‚úÖ agility‚úÖ rally‚úÖ she is ready to go! Once she can stick the landing with a dedicated family who will not give up on her, the possibilities are endless for this happy girl. She has recently been visited an obedience trainer. She has walked well with her and has shown improvement. She likes to engage with other dogs, but she can be a lot for them to handle. She will probably want to be the boss of other animals and may not tolerate 2nd place. Her forever family will need to be firm with her and consistent with training and they will need to let her know they are in charge and she is not. She may not be suited for first time dog owners as she has a big personality and will need hoomans experienced with high energy dogs to work with her. She is not aggressive just very energetic with all life forms. She is very entertaining to watch. She loves to run around and dive into the play yard pools...even in January! She is tons of fun with a toy, and that can help redirect her attention when she starts getting overly excited. Reviews from her fan club:"Ivy is a very smart dog, she has puppy energy."Chris Kennel staff and Meet and Greet specialist. "Ivy has a sweet soul and a great sense of humor. I enjoy spending time with her. She plays hard and loves her toys. She will be a great dog once she can get out of the kennel environment and finish being a puppy in a loving home that will help her be her best self through training."Terza (volunteer)Ivy considers her breed combo to be: part German peppered Dog, part Great Plane, and part Doberman pitcherūü§£ check out those ears!! Story
Happy's Happy and fun all the time. ūüėĄ He was given his name by the Animal Control Officer who brought him in and walks him regularly. Happy likes to brag to the other dogs that he has an in with management. He loves walking and sniffing and listens well to strong leaders. Happy needs to work on his leash manners, a few circles and changing directions should cut down on the pulling. He walks well on a training collar. He is easily excitable and would not do well with little dogs or cats, boy are they fun to chase!!Happy is one of our residents that is desperate to get out of his kennel. He needs more interaction with people and exercise to get all of his wiggles out. He doesn't like it when his volunteer friends have to leave him in his kennel. The loud busy kennel life keeps him wound up all day. He just wants to relax. He weighs 59 pounds and is a very handsome fella. Happy's story is one that breaks our heart. He was left behind, abandoned in a yard with another dog, when his folks moved, but dogs are so forgiving and resilient, can't nothing bring him down. He has moved on and is ready to devote himself to someone worthy of his love. He's a blank slate, which makes it a challenge for people to connect with. With time and TLC Happy will open up again and bond with his new best friend who can mold him into the dog they want! Happy is ready to let the good times roll with you!!Happy has a few favorite volunteers that adore him. They come almost everyday to walk him and work with him. BFF volunteer Cheryl had this to say about Happy:"He is a strong boy, but not too big. He can pull, but I'm able to handle him. He mostly ignores the bigger dogs. He listens to me. I walk him almost every day. He's still young and needs training. I always carry a pocket full of treats for training reinforcement. He lets me hook him up very easy, and actually goes by the other dogs really easy. I find it easy to get him in and out of his kennel. He sits for treats and looks to you for direction. He does like to run, so I run with him some. But he also loves to stop and sniff. So, once he gets out and does his business, he is usually a mix of running, stopping and sniffing and sitting for treats. He will sometimes pick up a big stick, or a plastic bottle, or, today he picked up an orange someone discarded and carried it in his mouth like a ball. He makes me laugh."Come and spend some time with Happy and take in a few good sniffs. Happy needs you! And maybe you need his happy self in your life too! Story
Breezy Bugs is another one of our Golden Girls. She channels her inner Dorothy character aka Bea Arthur and is ready with a wise crack when you walk by her kennel. If you dare not take her out, you better be ready to hear some jibber jabber from her. Just like Dorothy, she has had ups and downs in her life. She came to HSWC emaciated, thought to be wandering on her own for a while. She now weighs 56 pounds and can still gain more to be her best self. It doesn't seem like she has had a good home but she is spunky and spirited and ready to make the best of any situation. She walks well, seems to mingle in social situations well. She likes things her way, and loves treats. She needs to be in a loving and patient home. Ages10+ for homes with kids. With young people that know how to give a dog space and not interfere during meal time or snacks. Breezy has not had a steady flow of food in her life so she will always be anxious to gobble those yummy treats. New friends need to be aware that since coming to HSWC the staff and volunteers have been walking by her kennel and giving her treats through the gate. Be cautious with hands coming toward her face because she now expects those fingers to have treats in them. She is well mannered And is looking for love in all the right places now!! Hopefully with a comfy dog bed and an all day buffet. She is a beautiful girl who has lots of life left to live and needs a companion to enjoy things with. She does not need a long walk. She is quick to get her potty done and circle on back inside to her comfy bunk. Ready to enjoy popcorn and a Golden Girls marathon and snuggle up to her forever person. Her heart is true, she's a pal and a confidant. Come and visit her and you will see she will tell you thank you for being a friend. Primary Color: Brown Weight: 57 Age: 9yrs 5mths 1wks

Story
Bruno is heartbroken. He suddenly lost his owner in an unexpected accident. He was a loved house dog one day and trying to figure out what happened the next. So many people don't prepare for this moment because it seems so far away. For Bruno he knows he was loved and will be loved again in a home soon enough. For now, he is going to get lots of love and attention from the volunteers and staff here at the shelter. He is a bit unsure of his surrounding and needs a bit of time to adjust as he is getting used to a new routine. We hope once he is back into a home, he will settle back into trusting his surroundings and the people in it and get back to his old self. He weighed 57 pounds at intake. He does not seem to react to cats or dogs. All things new need to go slowly for him as he is slow to warm up to change. He has been through so much. Here are some comments from his favorite volunteer Cheryl:"If you get a chance to walk sweet Bruno - He's the guy at the end of A Row who seems very barky when you walk by - but is so very sweet when he gets out of his kennel....He usually needs to do his business right away - and every time I've walked him he can't even make it to the gate before peeing. After he does his business, he usually walks good with breaks for belly rubs and treats, and whenever we head back in, he runs to go back (not sure why, b/c he is obviously stressed to be in the kennel). Anyways - He is so smart. His former owner obviously taught him stuff. He knows "sit" and "down", and when you tell him "down" - he gets down, does an "army crawl", and then rolls over and shows you his belly for rubs. It's the most adorable thing. Love this guy and hope he isn't with us for long...."Bruno's Mom and her family loved Bruno very much, they were all heartbroken and in tears to give him up. We are sure there is a loving person out there for Bruno so that this tragic story can have a happy ending. And if you weren't already crying- the family has already paid the adoption fee to ensure he gets a good home. Some stories are very sad to tell, but the happy endings keep us going. Let's get Bruno his. ‚ô•ÔłŹ Primary Color: Brown Secondary Color: White Weight: 55 Age: 4yrs 4mths 0wks

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet our newest intake Slugger! We pulled Slugger from Eastern Shore Regional Animal Control Facility Melfa as he is an amazing good dog who was in imminent danger of euthanasia due to lack of space and so many incoming dogs. Slugger is good with people, and friendly with other dogs, and was non reactive to cats when walked through the cat room. Despite his muscular body and big mouth Slugger is sweet, gentle and respectful. He is about a year old and full of comical goofy energy. There is no feeling down around this boy. He will put a smile on your face every time you look at him. His happy, jolly energy is infectious! He was neutered mid September and completed his shots and got his microchip at the same time. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Please read the bio of the rescue you are interested in to insure you are a match if you are a match the first step is to complete the online adoption application  Unique came to us after her family realized they couldn't care for her any longer.  She was born with some birth defects affecting her 2 front legs.  We consulted with multiple veterinarians who all agreed there was really nothing that could be done for her.  She runs, plays, and does all things any other dog would do.  This could affect her down the road with early arthritis.  Unique is a sweet girl who loves to romp in the yard playing with her toys.  She has gotten along with other dogs her at the rescue but we would prefer if there is another dog in the home it be a male.  We would also like to see her have a safe physical fenced in yard where she can play safely.  She is now spayed, up to date on rabies and distemper vaccines,  microchipped and current on preventatives.   She does ok on leash but could use more practice with it. She will need work on her house training in her new home. Dog Name: Malin Breed: Pittie mix Sex: female Age: ~ 3 yo Weight: 40 lbs Medical Needs: Malin has mild hip dysplasia on one side and bilateral luxating patellas. She takes a Dasuquin supplement daily which has made her joint issues almost imperceptible. This costs $13/mo¬† Housebroken: yesCrate trained: yesGood in the car: LOVES to go for rides.¬†Good on a leash: Meh. Not so much. She acts like she has ADHD when the leash comes out. I think she‚Äôs hoping the next stop is the car!¬†Energy level: mediumNeed a fenced in yard: not required¬† Dog Friendly: Yes and no. She is able to be out and about in public around other dogs and be fine. In the home, she can coexist with the right match of a dog‚Ķlower energy and not in your face. She has been known to resource guard items and food. For this reason, ¬†a dog free home is recommended.¬† Cat Friendly? No. Perhaps it was a W. Virginia mountain lion that attacked her, leading to her amputation. Now she seeks revenge on all felines. ‚Äć‚Äć‚Äć It‚Äôs the story we are going with! Kid Friendly: I recommend teens. She could interpret screaming and yelling from youngsters as someone being threatened and would want to intervene. She seems sensitive to that.¬† If you followed GRR for a while then you know Malin has been with the rescue for about 17 months now. She came with some pretty severe injuries to her face and front legs which necessitated the amputation of her front right leg. During these 17 months, she‚Äôs had exactly 2 meet and greets!! Only TWO One of which is when we learned of her desire to nomnom a kitty ‚Äć. Sure, she‚Äôs not perfect and needs a specific kind of home but she is so deserving of that. She is such a loving and devoted companion. I guarantee that if someone broke into my house all my dogs would probably hide but Malin‚Ķshe would protect me at all costs. She absolutely loves going anywhere in the car‚Ķperhaps you know an over the road trucker in need of companionship? She is also happy to just chill at home on the couch if that‚Äôs where you are. She‚Äôs really not asking for too much. I know there has to be someone out there who sees the beauty in her like I do!!¬†¬†Fosters Location:Hurlock, MD Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app ‚ÄĒ¬† ##1363897##
