Every once in a while, a dog comes through our doors whose story reminds us just how resilient animals can be. Scooby is one of those dogs, and we are so excited that his next chapter is finally ready to begin! Scooby arrived at BENCHS after being found as an emaciated stray. He was severely underweight, and it was clear that this sweet boy had been through some difficult circumstances. While we may never know exactly what his life looked like before he was found, we do know that he deserved so much better. Over the following weeks, our team focused on helping Scooby regain his strength, recover physically, and feel safe in his new environment. With proper nutrition, medical care, patience, and plenty of love, Scooby has made a full recovery and is officially ready to find his forever family! And somewhere along the way, this special boy managed to become a staff favorite! Scooby has settled into life at BENCHS beautifully, and we've had the pleasure of watching more and more of his personality emerge. One of the things we love most about him is his wonderful balance of independence and affection. Scooby doesn't necessarily need to be the center of attention every moment of the day, but he absolutely enjoys spending time with his people. He's perfectly content doing his own thing, and then wandering over for some affection when the mood strikes. And if you happen to offer him some good butt scratches, you'll probably make his entire day! Scooby is also a very respectful gentleman when it comes to his living space. He keeps his kennel remarkably clean and seldom has accidents indoors, which leads us to believe he may already have a pretty solid understanding of potty training. Of course, every dog needs a little time to learn the routines of a new home, but Scooby has certainly given us a wonderful starting point. He also takes excellent care of his belongings, leaving his beds and blankets intact rather than turning them into a pile of stuffing. We appreciate a boy who knows how to enjoy a comfortable bed without redecorating it! When it comes to walks, Scooby is an absolute pleasure to spend time with. He walks nicely on leash with little to no pulling, and one of his most endearing habits is how frequently he checks in with the person walking him. Rather than spending the entire walk dragging someone from one interesting smell to the next, Scooby seems to enjoy exploring while still maintaining that connection with his human companion. It's a lovely quality that makes spending time with him especially enjoyable. Scooby does have a playful side, although he's not necessarily your traditional fetch enthusiast. He'll happily chase after a toy if you toss it, but bringing it back for another round doesn't seem to be high on his priority list. Instead, we've discovered that Scooby really shines when given opportunities to use his nose! Scent based enrichment seems to be one of Scooby's favorite activities. He loves searching for treats hidden in his blankets, sniffing out goodies scattered in the grass, and participating in little games that encourage him to investigate his surroundings. These activities allow him to use his natural instincts, engage his brain, and enjoy something rewarding at his own pace. For his future family, simple activities like treat searches, sniffing walks, and food puzzles could be wonderful ways to keep him mentally stimulated and happy. Our team discovered that offering him a Frisbee with peanut butter, along with a gentle hand on his collar to help him remain in place, allowed us to administer his injections with minimal restraint. It's a wonderful example of how a little creativity, patience, and positive reinforcement can make necessary care much less stressful for an animal. Scooby has shown us that when we take the time to understand what motivates him, he's incredibly willing to cooperate. Derek arrived at BENCHS alongside his brother, and now he’s looking for an active home where he can continue to learn, play, and explore. He is incredibly inquisitive and loves engaging with people, always eager to see what you’re up to and be part of it. Toys are a big hit for him, and he’s at that fun stage where everything is an adventure. Derek is currently working on potty training and will need a home that can continue to guide him with consistency and patience as he polishes those skills. He would likely do well either as the only dog or with another social, friendly dog who can help show him the ropes. We are unsure how he would do with cats, though he has shown some interest. Ella was found running loose in the city of Wells, but as the days passed, no one came to claim her. We don’t know where her story began, but we’re hoping her next chapter starts with someone who sees just how much she has to offer. Ella has since been Spayed, Microchipped, Heart worm tested (negative) & brought up to date on her shots, & this high energy pit bull is ready for an adventure! She loves a good game of tug & would be a wonderful match for someone who enjoys staying active & can give her plenty of playtime, guidance & love. Meet Stella! Stella is a beautiful 3-year-old girl who came to us as a stray. She completed her stray hold, but sadly, no one ever came forward to claim her. Now Stella is ready for the next chapter of her life — one where somebody chooses her and never lets her wonder where she belongs again. Stella is a sweet girl with those big, soulful eyes that seem to ask for just a little love and reassurance. She is still settling in and showing us more of her personality each day, but one thing is already very clear: this girl deserves a home of her own. We believe Stella may be a Pit Bull/Lab mix, although like many of our strays, her exact breed is anybodys best guess. What we do know is that she is absolutely adorable. At just 3 years old, Stella has so much life ahead of her. Her past may be a mystery, but her future doesnt have to be. Stella is waiting for someone to look into that sweet face and say, Youre coming home with me.

Wrigley is a lovely girl born in February of 2015 who came to us in late January 2026. She is ready to find a new home and family now. Wrigley is a friendly old gal who is still spry for her age. She keeps a clean kennel. She likes to go outside and watch or be around the other dogs playing, but doesn't have much stamina to keep up if involved in play for too long. She is skilled in communicating her boundaries to the other dogs without being reactive. She has done best with socialized dogs who can understand those communications, but may do well with other too with a proper introduction. We suspect she will also love being a couch pup, watching movies and maybe even sharing in your popcorn. All pets adopted from the Humane Society of Freeborn County will be spayed or neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccinations, testing and will be microchipped. All of this is included in their adoption fee. They will need this time to decompress, and adjust to a new routine and environment. During that time we will provide check ins and counseling to ensure a successful transition. Sequoia is 10 yo. She has lived with me and my fiancé her whole life since she was a puppy at 8wks old. She is house and potty trained. She loves to travel and she is kind to most. Sequoia loves to cuddle and sleep in her own blanket. She is such a sweet heart and loves to be with family. She loves to go on runs and walks. She knows a hand full of commands as well. Kitty came to BENCHS as an unclaimed stray from the City of Mankato, and we have since learned more about his background to help us find the right match for him moving forward. Kitty was previously known as Houston and was rehomed in May 2025. He lived as an indoor dog and did well with people, including children ages 8 to 14. He was crate trained overnight, rides well in the car, and enjoys human attention. He is a smart dog who can open certain doors and may slip out of a tie out if it is not secure, so supervision and good management will be important. Kitty weighs about 68 pounds and was born on April 20, 2023. He is a young, energetic dog with a lot of enthusiasm for life and enjoys showing off the commands he already knows. In his previous home, Kitty lived with dogs and did well with a spayed female, but he was involved in a serious incident with an intact male dog. Because of this history, Kitty is dog selective and would do best as the only dog in the home or with careful, experienced placement. He also has a high prey drive and should not live with cats, chickens, or other small animals. Kitty is a bright, powerful young dog who will need a home that can provide structure, clear boundaries, and continued training. With the right environment and guidance, he has the potential to be a loyal and rewarding companion.
