Story
Dog Name: Malin Breed: Pittie mix Sex: female Age: ~ 3 yo Weight: 40 lbs Medical Needs: Malin has mild hip dysplasia on one side and bilateral luxating patellas. She takes a Dasuquin supplement daily which has made her joint issues almost imperceptible. This costs $13/mo  Housebroken: yesCrate trained: yesGood in the car: LOVES to go for rides. Good on a leash: Meh. Not so much. She acts like she has ADHD when the leash comes out. I think she’s hoping the next stop is the car! Energy level: mediumNeed a fenced in yard: not required  Dog Friendly: Yes and no. She is able to be out and about in public around other dogs and be fine. In the home, she can coexist with the right match of a dog…lower energy and not in your face. She has been known to resource guard items and food. For this reason,  a dog free home is recommended.  Cat Friendly? No. Perhaps it was a W. Virginia mountain lion that attacked her, leading to her amputation. Now she seeks revenge on all felines. ‍‍‍ It’s the story we are going with! Kid Friendly: I recommend teens. She could interpret screaming and yelling from youngsters as someone being threatened and would want to intervene. She seems sensitive to that.  If you followed GRR for a while then you know Malin has been with the rescue for about 17 months now. She came with some pretty severe injuries to her face and front legs which necessitated the amputation of her front right leg. During these 17 months, she’s had exactly 2 meet and greets!! Only TWO One of which is when we learned of her desire to nomnom a kitty ‍. Sure, she’s not perfect and needs a specific kind of home but she is so deserving of that. She is such a loving and devoted companion. I guarantee that if someone broke into my house all my dogs would probably hide but Malin…she would protect me at all costs. She absolutely loves going anywhere in the car…perhaps you know an over the road trucker in need of companionship? She is also happy to just chill at home on the couch if that’s where you are. She’s really not asking for too much. I know there has to be someone out there who sees the beauty in her like I do!!  Fosters Location:Hurlock, MD Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app —  ##1363897##

Story
Dog Name: Etta JamesBreed: American Pit Bull Terrier mixSex: FAge: 6 yearsWeight: 55 lbs Medical needs: None Housebroken: Yes Crate trained: Yes. She also sleeps in her crate over night in her fosters bedroom.  Good in the car: Yes. Etta loves to get out of the house and go for a car ride.  Good on a leash: Etta does well with a prong collar.    Energy level: Medium. Etta loves to play and run around. So she will need a daily outlet. While she does play hard she will also lounge around and sleep with you in bed or the couch. Need a fenced in yard: No, but of course she will need to be leashed and exercised regularly to burn off energy.  Dog Friendly: Yes. Etta lives with a resident dog and they get along well. She will do best with dogs her size or bigger because she does play rough. Etta is a bit cautious at first so she requires a slow introduction.  If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home:  No Cat friendly: Unknown  Kid Friendly: Yes If yes, what's the youngest age: 10 and up. Traits that make your foster special: Etta is a beautiful brindle American Pit Bull Terrier mix.  She is food motivated and loves to be with her people! She also likes to lay in the sun, belly rubs, playing in water, and playing tug or fetch! She  is also a bit spoiled and loves a monthly bark box for super chewers. Etta will be a perfect addition to any home willing to give her time to warm up.   Foster’s Location: Newark, DE Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app) ##1698223##

Story
Dog Name: Franchie  Breed: Pit mix Sex: F Age: 11 years old  Weight: 60 lbs Medical Needs: Has some old lady lumps and arthritis but is otherwise in good condition and feeling great for her age. She won't be competing in agility contests though! She gets some anti-inflammatories for comfort, which should be continued. Housebroken: Yes! She goes to the door when she needs to go, or she comes to tell you about it! Crate trained: Yes, but not always happy about it. Prefers using the crate on her own terms. Once you shut the door she may protest for a little bit, but settles down. Good in the car: yes! She loves to get in the car and go, though she needs a boost.  She sits quietly and looks out the window. Good on a leash: ok on a leash. She never learned to be led, and tries to control the walk. The walks are still pleasant since she mostly just wants to sniff and stroll. Energy level: low-medium Need a fenced in yard: no, if supervised. Dog Friendly: Would be best as an only pet. She has come to accept the resident dog, an older calm fellow, and could likely do so again. She does not want to be challenged, to compete, or be pestered at her age. She has come a long way to relax around other dogs, but is likely to remain a work in progress, with firm corrections and rewards for calm and accepting behavior. Cat Friendly? Unknown, doubtful. Kid Friendly: untested; however, she demonstrates a love of gentle people. Respectful and careful older children are likely fine. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them?  Franchie had a hard life before rescue.  Now she is feeling better, and loving leisure and affection! If this is retirement life, she’s here for it! She desperately wants a little attention and would be so happy with the simplest life of kindness. She has come out of her shell in the foster home and is soaking up the pets and treats. She is learning expectations and tries to please, but can be a little set in her charming old lady ways. Despite her age, she loves a game of tug and will chase a bouncing ball... And she will definitely let you know it's time to play. She absolutely loves going for nature walks, the more nature, the better—though she gets a bit tired and ready to go home after much more than a mile. She just wants to be where you are! Story
Dog Name: Eight Breed: Pit mix Sex: Male Age: 3 Weight: 70+lbs Medical Needs: None Housebroken: Yes, though I've been told he will try to mark in the beginning if given the chance. Crate trained: Yes, but don't give in when he looks at you all sad-puppy and gives the pitiful whine of the suffering. Good in the car: Yes, just tether him if you don't want a lap dog while you're trying to drive. Good on a leash: If you're a firm, confident handler, Eight will give you no trouble. If he smells a sucker, he'll drag you like he's the NASCAR track and you're the car. Energy level: Medium - can be your best cuddle buddy, but he's also got energy to burn. Need a fenced in yard: No, leashed walks will be fine. Just know he will try to chase a prey animal. Dog Friendly: In the home, yes, Eight gets along with dogs of all sizes and breeds. In public, he can be selective. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? No, having you all to himself would suit this hunk just fine. Cat Friendly? No Kid Friendly: Yes If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Older children (8+) that are tolerant of potentially being tumbled if Eight gets too enthusiastic and forgets his size. Traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Presenting the one and only Mayor of Himbo City: Eight The Great. This hunk’a hunk’a burnin’ love is all brawn, no brains; he big, he beautiful, he strong, he DUMB. There’s nothing but cotton and air between those ears, mark my words. Eight has exactly one thought behind those soulful eyes, and it's “cheese.” That being said, this boy is sweet as sweet can be, and sure to turn heads wherever you go with that strut of his. What a specimen, what a delight… what a shame he made his whole shtick “Gym Bro;” now that he's achieved the body of his dreams, he doesn't know what to do with himself. He's a goofball, and a happy one. Can't chase a ball to save his life, but he'll always have a smile for you. Eight needs someone who won't let him bulldoze over them. He knows what's holding his leash, and if you give him an inch, this himbo will take a mile. Not even out of maliciousness, either; he just be-bop-badoops along to the odd little drum beating in his head, and sometimes the music is louder than everything else. Hopefully you can find it in your heart to forgive him - he really is trying his best. Story
Dog Name: SailorBreed: Pitbull mixSex: MaleAge: 2 yearsWeight: 50 lbs Medical Needs: none Housebroken: yes, he’s amazing Crate trained: yes, he’s a quiet boy and only barks if he thinks there’s an intruder or you’re saying hi first thing in the morning (which means breakfast) Good in the car: He sits there and takes it all in. Good on a leash: yes, he walks like a gentleman Energy level: he alternates between “giddy happy puppy” and “timid quiet mouse”Need a fenced in yard: No Dog Friendly: yes, he loves everyone in his foster home, but is fed in his crate and his toys are kept in his crate too. He does well with a very slow intro, since he gets overwhelmed easily. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? No Cat Friendly: all cats are his friends and will get the happy playful paws as he prances towards them. Actually… the more we think about it… he might be part cat. Kid Friendly: yesIf yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Teen; BUT ONLY if your teen acts like an old soul and loves books, hot tea, and quiet afternoons knitting. Sailor does not enjoy loud obnoxious people, or unpredictable movements/noises. They make him nervous and overstimulated. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them:Although Sailor is almost two years old, he had a rough uncertain start to his life and needs a family that is going to help give him firm direction. Once Sailor knows that you’re on the “good person list” you’re on it for life. BUT… it takes a few meetings to get on the list, and you’ll have to go slow and steady when transitioning into your home. If he doesn’t know you he will cower, growl and bark until a person he trusts says it’s ok. Due to his insecurities, he will require multiple meets in his foster home to make sure the potential adopters are on the “good person list” and comfortable handling him before Sailor goes to his forever home. He is the type of dog that needs to know what to do in EVERY situation, and will look to you for structure and guidance. Sailor is the sweetest, happy tappy-toed gentleman in his current foster home but his foster home has also learned to recognize when he is overstimulated and needs a break in his crate. His foster home will pass along all their knowledge to the adopters, to make sure Sailor is set up for success in his new home. He is *very* nervous around new people, especially men, but he is learning that Mr. Man (his foster dad) is kind and gives him food and treats. At GRR we encourage a two-week shutdown when adopting; Sailor will need a slow-and-steady approach that will take longer than that. Too much freedom and he gets nervous and defensive, so his adoptive home will have to exhibit patience and be willing to move at Sailor’s pace when giving him freedom around the house. He might take his time getting truly comfortable in your home, but he will reward you with kisses, snuggles, tappy-toes and undying loyalty and love. Fosters Location: Dover, DE Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file, email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app) ##1697484##
