Story
Hi there, I’m Firefly!I`m a fun boy with a charming personality! I`m great at fetch and will stay in a down position, waiting patiently, until you throw the ball for me to expertly chase and return back to you. I`m so smart and agile - when I see a `wet floor` sign in the hallway, I naturally jump over it without even being asked! I can be vocal and bark at things but I just tell the humans that I`m doing my heeler job! When I make human friends, I do like to jump up and lick your face! I can be a lot when meeting new dogs by barking at them, but as long as they aren`t turned off by my loud `hello`, I enjoy playing with other dogs! I am a lap dog so I hope that you are comfortable with 73 lbs in your lap!MY IDEAL HOME INVOLVES…CHILDREN: I would do best in an adult-only home, but could potentially live with some respectful teenagers.OTHER DOGS: Potentially, while I enjoy playing with other dogs, I don`t love sharing them with my humans, so if I were to live with a dog in the home, it would have to be a particular, easy-going pooch; otherwise, I could have dog friends outside the home.CATS: No, given my prey drive.FIRST-TIME DOG OWNERS: Someone with dog and or herding breed experience would be most ideal.FENCED-IN YARD: Required, to help meet energy needs. Rural, un-fenced, would also be excellent!HOUSING ENVIRONMENT: Any with a yard.SOMEONE HOME MOST OF THE DAY: Not necessarily.SOME OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME…ACTIVITY LEVEL: Medium-high.HOUSE-TRAINED: Yes.If you are interested in adopting me, please click the `Adopt Me` button to apply!FOSTER ME! I`m excited to be selected as part of the Paisley Project and I`m looking for a foster home! If your home environment matches what I`m looking for based on the information above, please consider applying to foster me. The Paisley Project aims to match selected, long-stay animals at GHS with fosters that can provide a home that gradually introduces them to the everyday experiences of life as a pet. Fosters will offer the routine, structure and stability needed to help get animals ready for their new family. Learn more & apply at guelphhumane.ca/the-paisley-project

Story
Dexter / Male / Approx 4 years / 50 lbs / Australian Cattle Dog Mix / Good with Dogs / Good with Children / Not Tested with Cats / Medium-Low Energy / From Tennessee / Fostered in Brampton ** Follow Dexter's journey on Instagram: @lilcuddlebugsfosters** Meet Dexter! If you think there's no such thing as too many cuddles, this handsome boy might just be your perfect match. Dexter is full of joy, affection, and a little bit of goofiness. Sweet, calm, and endlessly loving, Dexter is happiest when he's by your side, whether that's joining you for a walk, lounging on the couch, or greeting you at the door after a long day. Dexter is a velcro dog who likes to stick close to his trusted humans. He has lived with children ages 7 to 17 and treats them just like the adults in his life, with gentleness, affection and enthusiasm for playtime and snuggles. When meeting new people, he may take some time to warm up and appreciates slow introductions and time to observe and sniff. Dexter walks well on leash and doesn't pull. He currently gets a short walk in the morning, a couple of breaks to play in the backyard with his canine foster sister during the day and an hour-long walk after work. Dexter also spent three weeks with dog sitters where he lived comfortably with their dog and had the chance to hang out with one of our Fetch + Releash alumni. He would do great with another laid-back dog or on his own. On occasion, Dexter can be uneasy and react to unfamiliar men or fast-moving people running, biking or riding scooters. With calm introductions and some space to approach on his own, Dexter has shown that he can become very comfortable with men. During his three-week stay with his dog sitters, he successfully lived with a man and eventually became his belly-up couch cuddle buddy. Dexter is great when left home alone and settles immediately. He is not crated and usually just curls up on a dog bed or the couch and chills out until his people come home. Dexter is a bit of a foodie and may counter surf, so having him in your home will be the incentive you've been waiting for to keep a tidy kitchen. He has been left for up to six hours without issue and is fully potty trained. While in foster care, Dexter received a diagnosis of megaesophagus, which comes with some long-term care. Megaesophagus means that Dexter's body doesn't push food into his stomach the way it should. He is stable on medication and eats his meals in a Bailey Chair, which keeps him in an elevated position. After he eats, Dexter stays in his chair for about half an hour to help his food settle and has become very accustomed to his routine. Small amounts of regurgitation are common for dogs with this condition, so Dexter's health does need to be monitored. When lying down, Dexter uses a travel pillow (which we can confirm is as cute as you're imagining it) to help minimize regurgitation. Megaesophagus can sound intimidating if you've never cared for a dog with the condition before, but Dexter's routine is quite manageable once you get used to it. His dog sitters had never cared for a dog with megaesophagus before and adapted to his feeding routine very quickly, finding it easy to work into their normal day. Dexter is incredibly patient in his Bailey Chair and his routine has simply become part of his day. Dexter's ideal home would be with a loving family who is ready for endless kisses and has a willingness to commit to his healthcare. He would do best in a home with a yard in a quieter residential area. Much to our surprise, Dexter has been waiting for his forever family for a very long time. This cuddle bug is ready and waiting to commit to a long-term relationship and would love nothing more than to spend his days snoozing at your side. Story
ORRIEOrrie's story starts with a young woman with big dreams, who started a dog rescue full of promise, on a ranch she rented with her husband, in the middle of rural Nowheresville, Texas. They pulled dogs from the same high-kill shelter we do, and brought them to the property to wait to be adopted. For a while the pace of adoptions was brisk, and most dogs didn't spend more than a few weeks there. From the outside, they seemed to be a perfect couple fully immersed in rescue...until one day things fell apart, and the woman packed up and split, leaving her husband behind to look after and rehome over 30 newly rescued shelter dogs. Two of those dogs, a heeler female and a Great Pyrenees/lab mix male, both still intact, were accidentally put into the same dog run. Unsurprisingly, several weeks later, the number of dogs on the property grew by 11 blond, speckled puppies. One of them was Orrie (first dubbed Guinness). Soon after that, we were asked to take on the support all those dogs and find them homes. Of course we said yes.We wish we could say we immediately took that young family out of the yard and put them into a warm and loving foster home, but we didn't have one of those for 11 growing puppies. This is the reality of dog rescue. At the time, we already had over 40 dogs in our care. In one fell swoop, we instantly doubled our roster -- just as adoptions were grinding to a standstill all over the world as COVID lockdowns were ending and millions of people were going back into the office for workdays, many of them giving up the dogs they'd adopted during the pandemic. Thus this family of puppies spent the first few months of their lives playing by themselves in their quiet, rural yard, venturing out into the world only to go to the vet for their vaccines. They had no one to expose them to the sights and sounds of suburban life, no one to take them out on leash walks to learn to navigate busy sidewalks, no one to reassure them when they were scared. Orrie was one of the first of the litter to be adopted and went straight from the ranch in Texas to his new home in the middle a bustling Ontario town.We know now that this was not a good match for our little Orrie. His lovely new family gave him loads of time and space to settle in, letting him determine what boundaries he was ready to cross. He warmed up to the children and got comfortable in the home. They did research, learned his triggers, hired a trainer, changed their routine...for 2 years they did everything reasonable to help him overcome his deep-seated fearfulness. Recently Orrie made it clear that he's reached his limit and has had enough. He just hates living in town, hates it with every fibre of his being. He is BEGGING not to be forced to go on walks on streets full of things that terrify him. Every time he goes out the front door, he's ready to have a breakdown. He is timid, but a goofy guy nonetheless! He loves to be close to his people, playing tug or chasing a ball, or snuggling at the end of a day of fun. Hes leash trained and likes to hike in quiet places, away from city noises. Hes very food motivated and loves to learn new tricks and show off the ones he knows. He will thrive in a home in the country or quiet neighbourhood, away from busy roads and noisy parks or playgrounds.Name: OrrieWeight: ~ 50 LbsGender: Male, NeuteredBreed: Heeler XColour: CreamMedical (past and present) & HW Status: Healthy, Dewormed, UTD on vaccinesGood with adults: YesGood with kids: Yes, with a slow introductionGood with dogs: Yes, with a slow introductionGood with cats: Highly doubtfulHouse trained: YesCrate trained: YesCrate aggressive: NoFood aggressive: NoLeash trained: YesEnergy level: Medium to highSuitable for an apartment: NoCan be handled: YesBarker: Not really
