Story
Meet Rowan 🐾 Rowan is a 1–2 year old Australian Shepherd mix who came to us as a stray, so much of his history is a mystery. What is very clear, though, is that Rowan likely spent most of his life in a rural or farm setting. He moves like a dog who’s used to wide-open spaces, independence, and having a purpose. The shelter environment has been a major adjustment for him, and confinement has been especially stressful. Being kenneled makes him uneasy, and he is still quite resistant to the leash — not out of fear or aggression, but because this simply isn’t how he’s ever lived. Rowan is an intelligent, sensitive working dog, and that sensitivity shows in how deeply he feels changes in his environment. While he struggles with the structure of shelter life, his true personality shines once he’s outside or spending one-on-one time with people. He is incredibly sweet, affectionate, and playful, and he enjoys engaging with those who give him patience and reassurance. Rowan wants to connect — he just doesn’t yet understand how to navigate this new world. This boy has enormous potential in the right setting. He would thrive in an active home that can provide daily physical exercise and mental stimulation. A home with land, a structured routine, or even a “job” to do would be ideal. Rowan will need an adopter who understands herding breeds and is willing to work through leash training, boundaries, and basic house manners at his pace. Consistency, positive reinforcement, and time will be key to helping him build confidence. Rowan is not a beginner dog and is not suited for a quiet, low-energy lifestyle. He is best matched with someone who values training, enjoys being outdoors, and understands that dogs like Rowan don’t just want activity — they need it to feel secure and balanced. Given the right environment and a committed adopter, Rowan will blossom into an incredibly loyal, devoted companion who is happiest when he knows he has a purpose and a place to belong.

Story
Joplin was brought into the shelter with her litter mates from a situation where there were too many dogs for one person to take care of. Joplin's mom looked to be an Australian Shepherd, but we don't know what dad was. Joplin is a happy-go-lucky, playful, and rambunctious puppy who craves attention and loves to play. Joplin returned from Puppies for Parole and her handler said she did very well. She adjusted well to her new environment and learned her basic commands. She is very treat motivated and can easily be taught simple things like sit, roll over, etc. She has a little anxiety around strangers but warms up quickly. They think she will do well in any family, even one with kids that are respectful of her and gives her time to adjust. If you think Joplin is the pup for you, complete an application online at:www.daslakeoftheozarks.com Primary Color: White Secondary Color: Brown Weight: 32.89 Age: 0yrs 9mths 1wks

Ozzie has just returned from Puppies for Parole. His handlers said that he was timid at first, but once he warms up to you and is comfortable, he enjoys the company of people and likes being petted. He is very good with other dogs and loves to run and wrestle. He also loves chew toys, balls and squeakers. Story
Grizzly here! I’ve had quite the journey — I was on the run for a few months before some kind people finally brought me to the shelter. All that running hurt my leg and gave me a torn cruciate ligament, but thanks to a wonderful donation, I had surgery and I’m all healed up now. I can be pretty shy when I first meet new people, but once I get to know you, I’ll be your loyal buddy for life. I love going on walks and, of course, I never say no to a good treat! Because I used to run a lot, I’m considered a flight risk, so I’ll need a fenced yard or to always be on a leash. Now I’m ready to find my forever home — could it be with you? If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop ##2435218##
