Story
This is a hard post to make, but we’re looking to rehome our sweet boy, Dakota. He’s a 5-year-old Australian Shepherd with a ton of energy and an even bigger heart.Dakota is loving, loyal, and smart. He’s fully potty trained and has been around kids with no issues—he’s very sweet, just high energy and tends to jump when he’s excited. He’d do best in a home with older kids or someone comfortable working with an energetic dog. He’s also incredibly protective of his people and his space. He can be very iffy with new people, especially outside the house. Once he’s inside and comfortable, he’ll love on anyone—but he tends to be overprotective in outdoor or unfamiliar situations. He needs someone who understands that and can help manage those introductions with patience and care. He’s been good with our lab mix but can be temperamental with new dogs. He just needs time to warm up, so a home with no other dogs or one that’s experienced with slow introductions would be ideal.

Story
Meet Ross!Ross’s journey hasn’t been an easy one. Back in 2018, he and his littermates were found abandoned in a trashcan as tiny puppies. Luckily, they were rescued and given the chance to grow up surrounded by love. For years, Ross enjoyed the good life—long walks, couch snuggles, and endless belly rubs. But after seven years and life changes, his world turned upside down. When his family could no longer keep him (due to accidentally knocking over grandkids), Ross found himself back with us.When he first arrived at his foster home in early August, Ross was petrified and shut down. But with patience, gentle hands, and a calm environment, Ross began to realize he was safe again. Now, this sweet 7-year-old shepherd mix is showing his true colors:✨ He melts for belly rubs.✨ He leans in for gentle kisses.✨ He loves quiet affection and the simple comfort of being near his people.✨ LOVES walks ✨ Cannot get enough of his squeaky toysWith the help of daily medications and time to decompress, Ross has blossomed into a loving, loyal companion. He’s ready for a fresh start in a home where he can feel safe, understood, and adored.Could you be Ross’s second chance? To have your home considered for adoption, read about our adoption process or fees, and find out about interstate transport (dogs only), please visit our website.https://longwayhome.org/apply ❤ Long Way Home makes no guarantees on breed--most animals we receive from shelters are mixed breeds. As long as they need rescue, that's what is most important to us.

Story
🏕️ Fiercely Loyal. Mildly Dramatic. Definitely Yours. Meet Freya. 🐾Looking for a dog who won’t ghost you after one hike? Freya is a 4-year-old Catahoula mix who’s not here to win popularity contests—she’s here to find her person and stick with them like dog hair on black pants.Freya's got energy for days—camping, paddle boarding, car rides? Let’s go. But when the sun sets? She’s on the couch, claiming her spot next to you, ready to judge reality TV and snore through crime shows. She’s a routine queen—meals, walks, bedtime? Keep it predictable and she thrives.
Petting? Meh. But offer her a belly or chest rub and she’ll lean in like you're her favorite masseuse.Top Skills:
✔️ Loyalty so strong it should come with a security clearance
✔️ Champion of quiet households
✔️ Can sniff out a routine from a mile away
✔️ Prefers her people in sweatpants, not chaosA few of her terms and conditions:
🚫 Not a fan of kids (or sticky fingers)
🚫 No cats or small animals (she's not into bite-sized roommates)
🐶 Loves other dogs—after a polite “getting to know you” phase
🧠 Needs a human with dog experience, patience, and an appreciation for quirky genius.Freya isn’t a “love-at-first-sight” kind of dog—she’s more of a “let’s build a strong emotional foundation through mutual respect and shared snacks” gal. But once she’s in? She’s all in.If your dream dog is loyal, routine-loving, semi-dramatic, and 100% couch cuddle committed—Freya’s ready to binge-watch life with you.To have your home considered for adoption, read about our adoption process or fees, and find out about interstate transport (dogs only), please visit our website.https://longwayhome.org/apply ❤ Long Way Home makes no guarantees on breed--most animals we receive from shelters are mixed breeds. Story
Jake is the friendliest boy you will ever meet! His story is quite sad, but we're sure he's going to find his new loving home soon. Jake was an owner surrender after his owner died and the surviving family members could not keep him. Since he's been in our rescue, he's been incredibly well-behaved, quiet, and so eager to please! He adores every person he meets and does extremely well with people of all ages. Jake has been around other dogs and has done very well, but we have not tested him with cats yet. This can be done on request if interested. Jake is a medium sized dog and would do well in any type of home. He is very agile and would do great with a person/family that enjoys the outdoors but would also love to be a snuggle bug on the couch soaking in all the attention. Whatever the situation, we feel that Jake would be an amazing addition to any family! Jake is neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and heartworm negative so he's ready to find his loving forever home! Please contact our rescue if you are interested in adopting or fostering. We will schedule a day/time for you to meet our adoptable animals first. If you decide to adopt or foster, we will provide an application to be approved. Once approved, an adoption or foster contract is signed. If you are fostering, you will be provided with all necessary items for the pet (food, bowls, crate, collar, leash, etc.). If adopting, we require an adoption fee that covers a portion of the cost of veterinary care. This is fully refundable for the life of the pet should the adoption fall through at any point. We will always take our pets back regardless of the situation.
