Story
HISTORY
Nyx was part of a severely neglected litter that was taken in by Animal Control in Vancouver, WA at about 4 months of age. She was adopted about a month later, in March 2026, and brought to the Tri-Cities. This adopter was impatient with her and she was afraid of him. A few months later he moved and abandoned her with his ex, who has made better progress with her by being patient and kind, but who is being forced to give up most of her pets due to financial pressures and is unable to keep her.
SOCIALIZATION
This little girl has slowly learned to trust her people, but starting her life with months of poor handling has made her skittish and especially fearful of men. She currently lives with a toddler and an infant and is comfortable with them. She does want to trust. Given time, patience and gentle handling she will warm up. She needs an adopter who can offer a calm environment, predictable routines, patient socialization, and a lot of love.
Nyx shares her home with several other dogs and cats, and gets on well with all of them. She is nervous and submissive when she meets new dogs, but she wants to play. She would probably do best if she can share her home with another friendly dog who can show her the ropes.
GENERAL TEMPERAMENT AND BEHAVIOR
She’s a mellow pup despite having two active working breeds in her family tree. Nyx needs some daily exercise, but she’s content to kick back and watch her people for much of the time. However, she may become more energetic as her confidence grows.
With people she trusts, Nyx is very affectionate. However she isn’t needy; she’s content to lie quietly and watch her people go about their lives.
Nyx likes to play – with toys, other dogs, her toddler buddy, and other humans she trusts – and will do best in a home with a yard big enough for zoomies. Once she has learned to trust her new family she will enjoy going for walks, but introducing her to new places will require time and patience.
She’s also a good watchdog who will alert you to visitors.
TRAINING
This pup is very smart but she can present as stubborn – although that might be due mainly to lack of confidence. She will not respond well to harsh handling, but we believe play-based training through consistent positive reinforcement will build her confidence and establish a strong bond with her person.
Nyx has good house manners. She is house-trained and will use a dog door, although when she’s afraid or anxious about being in a new environment accidents are likely to happen. She is also crate-trained, a good traveler who rides quietly in a car, not destructive, and doesn’t bark without reason.
She walks well on a leash, knows “sit” and “give me your paw”, waits for a release before she eats, and is working on “down”. Her recall isn’t great; if off-leash she will tend to stay close to her people but she often won’t come when called, probably also due to lack of trust and confidence.
HEALTH STATUS
Nyx is spayed, microchipped, up to date on shots, and free of internal and external parasites. Her estimated date of birth is October 13, 2025. She is close to full-grown and weighs around 30 lbs.
