Sampson is a 50lb, approximately 8-year-old English Setter who came to SWESR after being found as a stray in Utah. He’s settled into his foster home beautifully and has proven to be a sweet, smart, and adaptable boy. Sammy helped choose his new name (lots of tail wagging) and has responded to it ever since. He’s fully house-trained and clearly communicates when he needs to go outside. He’s also quite talkative in general; whether he’s asking for a walk, a treat, or some attention, he’ll let you know. He can stay home uncrated for 4-5 hours without any issues. At night, he sleeps soundly on his dog bed next to the human bed and regularly logs a full 8+ hours. Sammy is very affectionate and loves being close to his people. Hugs and couch snuggles are high on his priority list. Initially he had to work through some mild resource guarding of his humans, particularly around sharing lap or couch time with other dogs, but that issue is now in the past. He gets along well and lives quite peacefully with two other male English Setters. Sammy doesn’t guard toys or food. He is an active dog who will do best with regular exercise and mental stimulation. His foster mom walks him up to 5 miles a day, which keeps him happy and relaxed in the evenings. Five miles is a lot for most of us, and this is where a large, securely fenced yard would benefit Sammy so he can play and run the perimeter, exercising himself. He has proven himself safe with a 4-foot fence and doesn’t try to jump or climb to escape. He loves long walks and car rides. Because he was a stray, he can get very excited at doors and may try to push past when heading outside. This is easily managed by leashing him before opening the door. As with any active and inquisitive breed, his new family will want to be mindful about keeping doors and gates secure. Sammy would probably do well with children of any age, but given his history of mild guarding of human attention, SWESR recommends he be in an adult home or one with older children. Sampson is a loving, loyal, and active companion who bonds closely with his people and thrives with structure, exercise, and affection. He has the cutest face and is a truly special boy. Meet Handsome Augustus (Augie) – A playful, sweet and affectionate boy looking for His Forever Home! This stunning 6-year-old Orange Belton English Setter is ready to find a family that will love and appreciate him. He’s a big boy at about 70 lbs that walks well on a leash, which is quite an accomplishment for an ES. While we know he is an English Setter, we can only speculate about his bloodlines because of his larger size, possibly Ryman? Augie is a smart, independent, treat-motivated boy who picks up on training quickly. Augie is ok with the company of female dogs his size but honestly people are his favorite, and he doesn’t need another dog in his forever home. No cats please. A medium sized fenced yard that is interesting to patrol for bugs, butterflies, squirrels, birds, etc would suit Augie just fine. Angie’s favorite toy is a nyalabone. He didn’t know what to do with toys when he first arrived in his SWESR foster home and it’s been a joy to watch him learn to have fun playing with toys. He’ll play tug with his person or toss and play with a toy by himself. Augie came from an environment where he was living outside and was pretty much neglected. He’s come so far in rescue and now he’s a family dog. His foster Mom has professional grooming skills and he’s such a good boy on the grooming table; the only thing is the electric clippers are still somewhat scary so she is going slow. He’s come so far and the sky is the limit for this dear boy. In foster care Augie has blossomed into a devoted companion. He loves cuddling, hugging and tummy rubs. Like a true ES, counter surfing is a favorite pastime, but he’s trying very hard to learn his manners and boundaries. Augie is searching for a kind person who will guide him with love, consistency, and patience. Because of his size and enthusiasm for his people, he’s looking for a home without children (12 and under) or older folks who might be accidentally knocked about by his affectionate nature. Taco is a sweet, young Setter estimated to be less than 2 years old. Taco was abandoned from a hunting ranch in Idaho. He was found with a crushed crate by the side of the road. Good Sam’s got him safe and to rescue where he is thriving! Taco is affectionate with people and typical activity level for a field ES so he would be good in a family with children older than 5 years old. Taco loves to play and would be best in a home with another younger dog who shares the same joy of shared tug toys and active play. Since Taco shows some separation anxiety, having another dog(s) or human available for much of the day would be ideal. Taco gets along well with other dogs. Cats are unknown. Taco would enjoy a medium-to-large yard to burn off his energy with a 4–5-foot fence to ensure his safety. Typical of most setters, Taco is quiet in the house and active outside of the house. He is now house trained and has learned some house manners and basic commands. He is still working on his commands as he came into rescue with no training of any kind. Since Taco was dumped in a crate, we have not worked on crate training with him. He does roam the house and yard unattended with two other male dogs without issues of damage to any type of property. This is quite amazing for a youngster, wouldn’t you agree! Currently Taco is fed several feet away from the other dogs in the house as he was resource guarding upon entry into a home. This behavior has improved vastly with consistent feeding times and food amounts. Taco rides perfectly in a car and will need additional leash training as he tends to pull a bit with a simple harness. Burning off energy in the yard and hunting rodents is his favorite activity of all. Taco is neutered and utd on vaccines and tests. Meet Bowie, a stunning nine-year old chestnut field Setter looking for his forever home or forever foster home – a home and someone looking for devoted companionship from this spry, handsome, dapper fellow! Bowie’s previous owners moved overseas and were unable to take him and Luna with them. (Luna is also a SWESR dog available for adoption.) Bowie is an intelligent fellow whose expressions are watchful and observant, and is a dedicated cuddler looking for a companion who will be as devoted to him as he is to you. Don’t be fooled by Bowie’s age, as he is able to run and turn on a dime, enjoys walks, and exploring the backyard, especially when a human companion is with him, which is his preference. He also welcomes play sessions inside of the home. Bowie welcomes belly rubs and love, and rightfully deserves to be the center of attention. He likes to talk with you, playfully grumbling when engaged with you and his toys, combined with kisses and smiles from him. But he will also let you know with a grumble or light growl if you are petting an area that bothers him or if he is concerned about something like a visit to the veterinarian’s office or a strange dog approaching him. While Bowie does not care for being picked up a lot, he is a serious Velcro boy, wanting to be next to you on the couch, even using his paw to bring your hand toward his belly for rubs, which he loves. Bowie appreciates his meals and would welcome the chance to help you with their preparation. He does a dance if he thinks his dinner time has passed and wants to draw your attention to that fact – an impressive spinning dance to behold, complete with the convincing cocking of his head and expectant expression to communicate the hour. Bowie is accustomed to having furniture rights and wants to be near you, including sleeping next to or near to you. He really enjoys walks and exploring, but is in the early stages of learning to walk on a loose leash, and does the best with the use a gentle lead and treats as rewards. His excitement for walks is evident. He is a super smart Setter, but it is unknown if he had a ton of leash walks in his past, thus patience and training will benefit in this area. Bowie knows the commands for “sit” and “stay,” and appreciates praise as well as treats when training. Bowie is house-trained and has never had an accident while with his fosters. He will even ring a string of bells on the back door to tell you if he needs to go out. Bowie enjoys exploring and sitting and observing outside, mainly when his human is with him. Like to read or have your coffee outside? Bowie’s your buddy to accompany you! Want to look at the stars in the sky? Bowie will gladly contemplate the cosmos by your side! Want someone to sit by your feet while you write or catch up on the news online? Bowie will support your intellectual pursuits! Yardwork? No problem- he’ll be there to encourage and supervise! Bowie is currently taking allergy medicine once a day, but no worries or angst, for giving medicine to Bowie is easy. He is eager to have his additional treat and has never once spit out his allergy pill. In fact, he’ll meet you at the medicine cabinet and patiently wait for his medicine. Bowie is also very easy to bathe and enjoys being groomed. He patiently sits in the tub/shower while he is bathed, and completes the activity with zoomies after he’s clean. One suspects that he takes great pride in his appearance! His stance is simply regal! Bowie rides well in the car, but gets a bit concerned if one of his humans leaves the vehicle, even with the other human present, and will anxiously await the person’s return. When enroute, he is very quiet and relaxed. Tethering him in the car works fine. He will also wait when instructed to enter and exit the car, but tethering is still recommended for safety’s sake since he is an English Setter, after all! Bowie would be a great match for anyone seeking a loyal, intelligent, devoted loving dog and a human who is home most of the time. Bowie values being with people and does not enjoy being apart from them. If you’re a homebody, Bowie would be a great companion, ready to be by your side. Belly rubs and kisses are much appreciated by this expressive fellow. Currently Bowie enjoys a medium-sized fenced backyard with a six-foot privacy fence. He is not currently sharing a home with other pets or children, with the exception of Luna, a fellow English Setter who has lived with Bowie all of her life. (Luna is also available for adoption, and they can be adopted together.) He is not a candidate for hunting. Bowie is curious about open doors; thus, a watchful eye on gates, doors, etc., is recommended, especially in the beginning when he is getting used to a new environment. Meet Luna! Luna is a six-year-old beautiful blue field English Setter who is an absolute sweetie with a sensitive soul. Luna came to SWESR with Bowie after her owners moved overseas and were unable to take the two with them. (Bowie is also available for adoption.) Luna is devoted to her humans and wants to be with you and near you all the time. She loves her toys and will bring you a toy if you have been away, even if you’ve been in another part of the house for just a short while. Luna will also play catch with her toys with you and is especially fond of her plush toys, and is always happily surprised by those that squeak! It may take Luna a little while to show her full personality and she tends to demonstrate her shyness by glancing to the side, but her happiness when greeting you will give away just how deep her emotions and attachment run. Additionally, she has a silly and goofy side that will shine after she is comfortable and feels safe. Luna welcomes each new day with her humans with happiness including a wagging tail and squiggles. Outside, Luna loves to sit in the grass and enjoy the sunshine while letting the wind blow through her gorgeous fur. If you’re with her when she’s basking, all the better to her. She also loves walks – the more, the better – and has a very pretty point when she encounters a bird or hears something rustling in the grass or trees. Luna is currently learning to walk on a loose leash with her humans and responds very well to positive reinforcement with treats while walking. She is attentive to sounds and will let you know if someone is approaching the house or yard. She is not overly fond of super loud noises such as fireworks. Luna is accustomed to having furniture rights and wants to snuggle on the couch with you, as well as sleep next to or near to you. She occasionally sneaks a peek or makes a side glance to make sure you are still near her and that all is well. When next to you, she may place a paw over your hand or foot to ensure you are safe. Luna knows the commands for “sit” and “stay,” particularly when treats are involved. Luna is house-trained – not a single accident while with her fosters – and will sit in front of the back door when she wants to go outside. Luna is not a picky eater. She is a very easy-to-please dog, who just wants to love you and be loved. Pleasing her humans is very important to her. Per the veterinarian, Luna could lose a little weight, but she loves to walk as well as explore the backyard when her humans are with her, which will no doubt help with that effort. She will also gladly play (and exercise) with you in the house and outside via fetch with her stuffed toy. Luna rides well in the car, although she may get a bit concerned and vocal if one of her humans leaves the vehicle, even with the other human present. No doubt she wants to be sure you are safe and sound! When enroute, Luna simply relaxes during the ride. Tethering Luna in the car works fine. Luna would be a great match for anyone seeking an extremely sweet, loving, and devoted dog, preferably someone who is home most of the time and looking for companionship. Luna loves being with her human and gets a bit scared when they are away. If you run a short errand, she will greet you upon your return as if you have been away for days, elated to be reunited with you once again. Luna looks to her humans for approval and affirmation, always striving to please them. Luna does well with her brother, Bowie, and is fine when meeting other dogs on walks, although she is on the submissive side, and thus needs a champion to ensure other dogs don’t take advantage of her sweet nature. Currently Luna enjoys a medium-sized fenced backyard with a six-foot privacy fence. She has never tried to jump on or over the fence. She is currently sharing a home with fellow English Setter, Bowie, with whom she has lived her entire life, but is not currently sharing a home with other pets or children other than Bowie. (Bowie and Luna can be adopted together.) We have not tested Luna with children; however, she lived with a toddler prior to rescue. She is curious about open doors; thus, a watchful eye on gates, doors, etc., is recommended, especially in the beginning when she is getting used to a new home or environment. A home with children might be too loud and busy for this sensitive girl and she would prefer to be the center of attention. She is not a candidate for hunting or field work. Alfie is a one-of-a-kind, high-energy companion with a joyful spirit and a deep love for both people and other dogs. He is 4 years old and about 55 lbs. Alfie was originally adopted as a puppy from the Austin TX shelter, and he found himself back in the shelter as a stray recently. The owner, per his microchip, did not respond when the shelter reached out so SWESR was contacted for help. We knew he wasn’t a purebred ES but he looks “settery” and he really needed out of a very full, very rescue friendly shelter. Our DVM said that he was severely malnourished and he was either on his own for quite some time or someone was starving him; so it is not surprising that Alfie is very food motivated because he knows what it is like to endure food insufficiency. When it’s feeding time, Alfie spins and does the cutest front leg prancing dance. After spending just a few minutes in the back with Alfie, our Vet said “this dog is going to give someone a lifetime of smiles”. Alfie can tell us a few things about his life before rescue: he is house and crate trained and someone was very physical about disciplining him to the point that he’s afraid to get on the couch, even when invited. He has gotten comfortable enough in his foster home to get on the couch a couple of times after watching the other dogs enjoy furniture privileges. Alfie is smart and very much wants to please his person and he knows when he is caught doing something he shouldn’t, like sneaking a can of dog food or a packet of cat treats off the counter. From the start, Alfie has shown himself to be affectionate, social, and eager to connect—he thrives on interaction and happily accompanies his people wherever they go. He bonds quickly, enjoys physical closeness, and has a playful, almost exuberant presence. Alfie especially loves other dogs and will enthusiastically seek them out for play, often wanting to run and play for hours at a time. Because of this, he would do best in a home with an active, well-matched canine companion who can tolerate his persistence and energy. There is a 14 year old English Setter in his foster home and it wasn’t very difficult for him to learn to leave her alone, however Alfie is still crated when the people are gone. In addition to being very persistent about playing, Alfie also herds the other dogs, leading us to believe that one of his dominant breeds is a herding type dog. His foster Mom is guessing that he could be Border Collie mixed with either some kind of Setter or perhaps a Golden or some type of retriever. He doesn’t have a strong prey drive and is easily redirected. He doesn’t have a strong escape drive, he mostly just wants to be wherever his person is. He has been respectful around cats, but with his strong herding instincts, introductions and supervision are important. Alfie is intelligent and trainable, responding to basic commands like “no,” “here,”, “hush”, and his name. He walks well on a leash and adjusted to his foster home within a couple of weeks. Like many smart, energetic dogs, he benefits from structure and redirection. He quickly found the doggy toy box, picked his favorites and has mostly learned what is his to chew on. Alfie requires significant daily exercise and mental stimulation. A securely fenced yard is required where he can safely run and play. While he does not actively try to escape, he may take advantage of open gates or doors, so a vigilant home is important. He is sensitive to raised voices and he may initially react cautiously to new situations, but he quickly responds. Alfie loves to give kisses, since he is mouthy in his affection with people, we think kids in his forever home should be 12+ years old. Continued positive reinforcement and patience will assure Alfie that any negative reactions with people are in his past. Alfie is not a good fit for apartment living or a low-activity household. He would do best with an active person that can provide both structure and outlets for his energy. Alfie is thriving in rescue and has put on much needed weight. He will be an incredibly rewarding companion for some lucky person or family. His affectionate nature, intelligence, and zest for life make him a special dog who will flourish with the right match. He would love to have another active and playful dog in his forever home, but he would probably be ok as an only dog as long as his person works/stays at home and has an active lifestyle that includes the opportunity for Alfie to meet and play with other dogs. This is Thorfinn! I got Thorfinn from this website about a year ago. He is one years old (birthday December 22nd). We were told he was part golden retriever, but are unsure of what else he is mixed with since he was rescued off the streets. He’s potty trained, gets along with other dogs, and he’s a little bit of a shy dog. He takes a while to warm up to new people but is very playful and affectionate when he gets to know you. He’s very very goofy and loves to give kisses. I have to rehome him because I am currently pregnant and can no longer keep him. We wish to give him to a family that has experience with dogs and somewhere he can play because he has a lot of energy. We used to have a german shepherd, so he gets along with other dogs as well. No adoption fee, I just want to give him to a good home.
