Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Unlike her namesake, Garbo would never say “I want to be alone.” Garbo is a one-year old girl who loves running and playing with her doggy friends and then snuggling up to her humans. At her boarding facility, Garbo is known as a “love bug.”   Garbo loves playing with other dogs, and especially enjoys other dogs who love to run and play. Garbo likes to be around her humans or other dogs, and is happiest when she has a dog or human companion nearby.   Garbo is mostly an English Setter and has a fair amount of the prey drive English Setters are known for. Those who have been around Garbo think she may be mixed with a dash of Border Collie. She may be OK with cats, but would need supervision and slow acclimation in a home with cats to make sure.   Garbo needs all the things that an active young dog needs – lots of people time and training, plenty of exercise and stimulation, and an active resident dog in her adoptive home. Garbo will not be happy as an only dog. She also needs a securely fenced yard with a 6’ fence to keep her safe. Garbo is not a candidate for a home with children.   If Garbo has one fault, it is loving food too much to share. She guards her food. Because of this issue, her adopter will need to be careful with either dog or human food. Food guarding is not uncommon in rescued dogs and is an issue that can be worked with, and sometimes eliminated.   Garbo is crate-trained and appears to be house trained. She has basic obedience training, but is a willing student who needs to learn more. She is fully vetted and ready for a foster-to-adopt or adoptive home. Currently, Garbo is in a boarding facility near Salt Lake City.  April 22, 2024, 9:35 am

Story
TJ is 4 years young and a smaller field boy at about 40 lbs. He is a sweet, shy, sensitive Velcro boy. His first owner was a hunter who passed away. Then he went to another hunting kennel where it was determined that TJ is not a hunter and they contacted rescue to find him a non-hunting home as a pet/family member.  TJ is looking for a calmer quiet home. Another active dog for him to run and play with would be ideal and would help him settle into a new home. Since he previously lived in hunting kennels, he’s never been an only dog. A home with kids would be too loud and unpredictable for him. He is affectionate and appreciates cuddles and physical assurances that everything is ok.  TJ needs a home with a secure physically fenced yard that is large enough and interesting for him to run/work/explore/play with another active dog buddy. His foster Dad says “he is lightning fast”. He has a typical prey drive for an field ES and has never lived with cats so we do not expect him to be safe with cats.   TJ has adapted to being a house dog well. He is eager to learn, wants to please and is treat motivated. April 22, 2024, 9:35 am

Story
Liam is a  5 year young,  55 lb, happy,  strong  field English Setter. He  has come to love cuddles from his foster Mom and will crawl in my lap. Furniture privileges are a must for this physical teddy-bear boy.  He  is looking for  a calm, patient and experienced home . Living inside is a completely new world to him, he looks all around like a young kid experiencing  sights and sounds  for the first time, in awe and  sometimes  not sure what to think.  He will retreat to his crate or a cubby hole in my office if a noise scares him or he needs a quiet place. For this reason, he is not a candidate for a busy home with kids.  Liam is still learning house manners and  watching for his cues is important.  If he’s been outside to potty, he will not hike his leg in the house. But if he hasn’t been outside for several hours he  will come to you and pace when he needs to go out . Supervision, belly bands and regular potty breaks are important. Liam excels at learning the routine of the house quickly and fitting right in with the pack.  He is learning to  use his voice when he has something to say. He’ll talk to people walking dogs on his street, to a bird in the tree ,  and to his foster Mom when  he wants something.  Liam LOVES toys, both inside and outside, his favorites are durable toys he can chew.  Liam needs a home with secure  5  foot fencing. I’m not sure if he would actually go over a shorter fence but he does go vertical on fences to get a better look at something and he can look over shorter fences. That coupled with his typical ES prey drive makes me think  sturdy 5  foot fences are best for his safety and security. A Setter-interesting yard is a must for Liam. He LOVES working the yard, self exercis ing and running and playing with another dog or toys. He is happy in a stimulating outside environment, and he has a constant Setter smile when he’s outside doing his thing. He is not a candidate for an apartment or a home without a physical fence. Liam is a  solid, strong  boy so he’ll need a person that is steady on their feet and can work on his leash training .  Liam’s dog social skills are good. He joined a foster home with another foster dog that  does not have good  doggy social skills and triggers to a scuffle very easily. So the two boys only met through a crate or a fence for the first days after Liam arrived and by the time they were introduced outside Liam was very respectful of the other dog’s space. After about a month, the boys are BFFs that run and play together and when the other foster dog triggers into inappropriate behavior, Liam does not react.  The two boys play is very physical, Liam’s play buddy is a 40 lb ES. Sometimes Liam will crouch and wait for Ike to run by so he can intercept him.  Another active and playful dog  that is 40+ lbs  in the home  would help  Liam’s  happiness and integration into his new home. Liam does not need a home with ES experience, but he does need a home that has experience with bigger dogs.  He’s a bit much for the two smaller and senior ES females in his foster home and he’s learned to stay out of their way and vice versa.  We don’t know if Liam previously lived with cats, we speculate that he had some experience with cats. He was interested in a waggy tail kind of way  initially.  It only took a couple of weeks for the bossy cat in the home to train him in proper cat etiquette, which is leave us alone. We think he will be fine with slow/proper intros to cats in a home where the cats do not run/hide. We do not think he would be safe with outside cats.  Liam is an  AMAZING dog and in the right home he will blossom and thrive. Liam is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. He is in a foster home near San Antonio, TX. April 22, 2024, 9:35 am

Good with cats,
Story
Syma is a 9.5 year young strikingly handsome boy who was left behind at a hunting ranch when it was sold. The new owner reached out to rescue and this boy is lucky enough to be fostered by very experienced people in New Mexico. In addition to the couple and their adult son, he also lives with four other dogs, both male and female and gets along with everyone; he even gets along with small dogs.  Cats are an unknown as there are no cats in his current foster home.  Syma has won the hearts of the humans in the home and thinks he is a lap dog.  He is very confident when out and about as his mom works at a vet clinic and he has gone to work with her on several occasions. He greets strangers and dogs enthusiastically and he acclimated quickly to his new home. Foster mom says he is very birdy and needs to be supervised when outside. He needs at least a 5′ fenced yard to be safe. Syma’s recall is uncertain, but he does come when called from the yard; usually he is following the other dogs inside the house.  He is a very sensitive dog and his foster mom says he would not be a candidate for an “E” collar. He is working on leash training and currently uses a harness. He does need daily walks, but he is not a candidate for an apartment.  He is a very quick learner and wants to please; he is also treat motivated.  Syma is neutered, fully vaccinated and crate trained; he enjoys a Kong or Nylabone to chew on while crated.  Syma is a dream dog and only barks when he needs to go out.  Would you like to open your heart and home to this special boy who lived most of his life as an outside ranch dog and is now enjoying the well deserved life of a rescue dog in a wonderful home?April 22, 2024, 9:35 am

Story
Sweet Chickpea is a soft, sensitive, shy girl that wants to be with people she can call her own. Like many English Setters, she will be like Velcro with her people, but not to the point of separation anxiety issues. She loves going to the Vet because people will stop, pet and talk to her. She is too soft mannered and sensitive for a home with young and/or loud/busy children. She is 5-6 years young and was rescued as a stray in Oklahoma. She’s now in a foster home near St Louis MO.  Chickpea is good with other dogs as long as given some time and space to meet properly. Like many of us, she expects her personal space, especially with strangers, and she will respect the personal space of other dogs. Once settled in she is fine with resident dogs that are not pushy with her. Chickpea would be fine with respectful smaller dogs. We do not know if she would be safe with cats. She prefers to eat and have treats separate from other dogs and this is something we recommend in general.  Chickpea is easy as far as typical field English Setters go. Her prey drive is low and her activity level is lower than other ES her age. She enjoys a romp in a securely fenced yard but does not need hours outside to run off high energy. She is very chill in the house and very much prefers furniture privileges and relaxing on the couch with her foster Mom. She is housetrained, treat motivated, likes riding in the car and good on leash. Chickpea is crate trained and a typical curious ES so she should be crated, at least initially, when no one is home or supervising her. If you are looking for a youngish field ES that is not high energy/prey drive then Chickpea might be just the girl to you. And to show you how much she appreciates her furever home, she will Roooooo for you!April 22, 2024, 9:35 am

Story
Kris is a very handsome 7 1/2 year young, long and lean orange and white pup that was left in a rural shelter.  The shelter contacted SWESR and he was brought  into rescue.  He had skin issues, probably a flea allergy since he was infested, and was a tad underweight.  He has gained just a bit of weight and his coat is soft and fluffy now. Kris is doing great in foster care and he is crate and house trained.   He is interested in cats and may chase if he encounters one that runs from him.   Kris pulls on leash and would really benefit from some leash training.  He is walking better using an Easy Leash harness. He enjoys furniture privileges and sleeps in bed with his foster human at night.  He very gratefully settles in and seldom moves throughout the night.  Kris seems to get along with most other dogs and plays very happily with the other two neutered male Setters in his foster home.  He came from a family that had two female Setters and they got along well.   Kris does have the capability to climb any fence.  He scales chain link like it is a ladder and has gotten over a 6 foot stockade fence.  The problem is easily solved by going outside with him. He cannot be left alone outdoors ever, even with other dogs.  Kris will need a human to watch him.  He is very sensitive and will come when you call him as he doesn’t want to disappoint you.  He is on the high-medium level of setter activity.  Kris would make a good running mate but he settles easily in the house.  He is very funny and playful with the other dogs and doesn’t mind curling up next to them for a spot on the sofa.  His favorite place to be is next to the human in the house though.  Kris is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. He is in a foster home in Edmond, OK. Won’t you consider Kris for your next family member?April 22, 2024, 9:35 am

Story
Meet Ghost, the adorable 4-year-old Retriever Mix! Don't be fooled by my name, I'm not here to haunt your house; I'm here to fill it with love and laughter. Right now, I have grander dreams - ones that involve playing fetch, running zoomies, and enjoying a good belly rub on the couch. SAPA! employees can't stop gushing about how much they adore me, and I think it's high time I enjoy a little rest and time to decompress in a cozy home. You see, life in a kennel is just not my jam. I'd prefer a soft bed, a sunny spot to nap, and someone to cuddle with. I'm super smart and I learn new tricks and commands very fast. Check out the videos on my profile! If you think I sound like your kind of pup please visit me at the Petco Love Adoption Center.
