Story
Athena is one of those dogs who is simply easy to love. She is calm, affectionate, kind, and happiest when she gets to be close to her people. Athena originally came to Cactus Ranch Rescue from the Killeen shelter euthanasia list alongside her puppies. She had already done the hard work of being a mama, and we were determined to make sure she got the same chance at a future that her babies did. Athena was eventually adopted alongside Atlas, and for a while, we thought her story had reached its happy ending. Unfortunately, the two were recently returned because of a serious crisis in their adopter’s life. The return had absolutely nothing to do with Athena. She did nothing wrong. She simply lost her home through circumstances completely outside of her control. And whoever chooses her next is getting one INCREDIBLE girl. 🥹 🐶 Dog friendly 🐱 Cat friendly 👧 Kid friendly 🦮 Leash trained 🏡 Kennel trained 💦 LOVES to swim ❤️ Calm, affectionate & incredibly kind Athena has already been a shelter dog, a mama, a rescue dog, an adopted dog, and now a returned dog. Through every chapter, she has remained gentle, loving, and good. She deserves stability. She deserves a family who adores her. And most of all, she deserves for the next goodbye to be the very last one. This time, we want forever to actually mean forever. 🩷

Story
Chase first entered our program when he was only a few months old and weighed about 10 pounds. He had been dumped in Grimes County alongside his mom and four siblings. Every one of them was malnourished, severely dehydrated, and suffering from painful skin infections. They received the care they desperately needed, and Chase was eventually adopted. Unfortunately, just a few months later, he was returned to us—now nearly a year old and about 50 pounds heavier.Chase came back with some…well, trust issues. But he is officially in his healing era, and he is working incredibly hard to prepare for the family who will finally choose him for good. ❤️‍🩹Now a stunning 60-pound German Shepherd mix, Chase is the perfect combination of athletic energy and gentle sensitivity. Like a classic shepherd, he is intelligent, eager to please, active, and happiest when he has a job to do. He would make an incredible hiking, running, fetch, or adventure partner for someone who enjoys staying active.Underneath all that energy is a soft, sensitive boy who is still building his confidence. New situations, unfamiliar noises, and ordinary objects can sometimes feel intimidating to him. Chase needs a patient, encouraging person who will use positive reinforcement to remind him that he is safe—and that he really is a good boy.Watching him conquer something that once frightened him, whether it is a noisy trash can, an unfamiliar staircase, or a new environment, is one of the most rewarding experiences. Every little victory helps Chase become braver.Chase also loves having large canine friends. He is social and playful with dogs his own size and feels most secure with a confident, large-breed companion who can show him the ropes.Chase is not looking for someone who expects perfection on day one. He is looking for a partner who will continue helping him heal, build his confidence, and navigate this big, wide world. To apply to have your home considered for adoption, read about our adoption process or fees, and find out about interstate transport, please visit our website at https://longwayhome.org/adopt.❤ Long Way Home makes no guarantees on breed--most animals we receive from shelters are mixed breeds.
