Story
Shiner is a handsome 5-year-old Mini Aussie with a brilliant brain, excellent manners, and enough herding-dog personality to keep life interesting. He’s fully vetted and looking for a very specific kind of home — because while Shiner is an amazing dog, city living and a busy household simply aren’t his thing.
This boy is incredibly well trained. Shiner knows sit, down, stay, and “go to bed,” has fantastic house manners, is kennel trained, walks beautifully on leash, and absolutely loves going for car rides. He does wonderfully with dogs both big and small and has peacefully ignored the cats in his foster home.
Like many Aussies, though, Shiner has a strong herding drive and is very aware of everything happening around him. New people entering the home, children, loud noises, cars going by, and lots of activity can quickly become overwhelming for him. When he’s overstimulated, Shiner’s response is primarily reactivity and barking — not aggression. He likes to keep tabs on his surroundings and has no problem announcing when something feels different.
Because of that, Shiner would not be a good fit for an apartment, shared-wall townhouse, busy neighborhood, or home with young children. Too much constant stimulation would keep him on edge instead of allowing him to settle and enjoy life.
Shiner’s dream? Honestly, probably retirement without actually being retired. 😂
We picture him happiest with an older or quieter adult household, a securely fenced backyard with plenty of room, a more rural or low-traffic setting, and relatively few visitors. Give this guy his people, his yard, a predictable routine, some enrichment, and another friendly dog or two, and we think he’ll be in heaven.
He doesn’t need a home that wants to “fix” who he is. He needs people who understand herding breeds and can give him an environment where his nervous system doesn’t have to be switched on all day long.
Shiner also has a professional training evaluation scheduled next week, which will help us learn even more about what makes him tick and give his future family additional guidance for helping him succeed.
He’s smart. He’s loyal. He’s trained. He’s quirky. He’s got opinions. And somewhere out there is a quiet little piece of property where Shiner is going to think he hit the absolute jackpot. ❤️
