Rescue FAQs

Lizzie's HAND: Helping Abandoned & Neglected Dogs is a one woman rescue dedicated to helping homeless dogs. The journey began in 1998 following the death of my mom, Elizabeth. Within 2 weeks of her death, a little old and grouchy Boston Terrier was curled up by my vehicle as I was leaving work. I was one of the last to leave, heavy rain was about to roll in, and I couldn't leave him there to fend for himself. Once he finally got in my car, we headed home. From that point on, I feel my mom puts dogs in need in my path. We found a home for the little old Boston we named Roscoe, but for years after that, it was really hard to part with the dogs we brought in. Finally in 2012, we took in a pittie puppy dumped near our home who was bald from mange and sick from secondary skin infections and intestinal parasites. It took a lot to get her healthy, and as much as I loved her, I knew it was BEST for her to find her a loving family where she could be the center of attention and showered with more love than she could ever imagine. After the start she had, she deserved that. It was the most bittersweet moment when I handed her over to her new mom, but knew she would be theirs forever, and they would give her the life I wanted for her. If I kept her, I wouldn't be able to take in another in need. I have a passion for helping those who cannot speak for or help themselves, and although my heart is big enough for everyone, I have a soft spot for those dogs most deem unlovable or not worth loving...the big heads, the scarred, the overbred saggy mommas. I was one who believed the poison infused by the media into minds of people about pit bull type dogs, but after being around them, I was able to make up my own mind and learn the truth. Every dog is an individual, just like people, and should be evaluated on their own merit. I am a one woman rescue with a family, a job, and our own pets, so will answer any inquiries as quickly as possible and ask for your patience. I know when you are ready to adopt a new pet, and you are drawn to one, you want things to proceed as quickly as possible, so I will do what I can to make that happen. Every dog deserves a chance, and I will do whatever I can to help the neglected, abandoned, abused so they may experience the love everyone wants.

Additional adoption info

If you are interested in adopting one of our available dogs, you may send a private message through the facebook page, or send an email to lizzieshand15@gmail.com. Requirements to adopt: 1) Adoption application completed in full along with a $25 NON-REFUNDABLE application fee paid via Pay Pal. If your application is approved, this amount will be applied towards the adoption fee. All monies collected go straight to the dogs in our care. This is an all volunteer run organization. 2) Upon approval of the adoption application, a home visit will be scheduled to meet all members of the household and other pets if applicable. 3) If home environment is proven to be a good fit for the dog, a meet 'n greet will be arranged at a neutral setting. 4) To give potential adopters ample time to make a decision whether the dog is the right fit for your personality, household and lifestyle, adoptions and possession of the dog will not take place the same day. 5) ADOPTION DAY: I will deliver the dog to your home, an adoption contract will be signed, and $125 adoption fee for adults or $250 for puppies will be paid via Pay Pal (prior to delivery of the dog) or in cash. All pets will be spayed/neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, heartworm tested, and on heartworm and flea prevention. Prior to requesting an application, please consider these items: ***ALL of our adoptable dogs have come to us from an undesirable life of mistreatment, abuse, or neglect, and they deserve to live as loved family members in the home as they have lived in their foster home. They will not be "an outside dog". ***To adopt a bully breed looking dog, adopter must be at least 21 years of age and own their own home. Obtaining rental housing which allows bully breeds is difficult to find, and in the event of a move, the dog is often surrendered because of housing policies. ***If you rent your residence, please contact your landlord to obtain pet policies PRIOR to requesting an adoption application. Many apartment complexes, property management companies, or privately owned rentals have very specific restrictions on pets, even if they are marketed as a "pet friendly" property. ***ALL residence and references will be verified, so please make sure you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Failure to do so will result in automatic disqualification of your application. Our policies are put in place in the best interests of the dogs so they may live a rich long life in a FOREVER home. If you have read over our policies and are in agreement, we would love for you to please message the page or email us for an adoption application: lizzieshand15@gmail.com
