My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dexter is a big teddy that attaches very quickly to his person. He loves to cuddle - A LOT! He's very playful and doesn't understand how big and strong he really is. He gets along well with dogs of any size, big or small. He loves to ride in the car and does well in or out of the crate.

Dexter comes from a rough background (at least in the last year) of men that abused him, so Dexter is easily intimidated by people and other dogs, if they show any signs of aggression or excessive barking, etc. So dog parks are out of the question at this time in his life. If someone knocks at the door, he will run for the crate. He's very shy around new people, especially if they are men. He tends to warm up to women a lot faster. He has a sweet and gentle disposition that is sure to melt any heart. I can not fathom why anyone would harm this sweet boy.

Dexter gets nervous in big open spaces, like the backyard. He prefers to be in the safety of his home, even if you are outside with him. Although it helps him if you go outside and spend time doing fun things with him. He is awesome at playing tag in the back yard with the other pups! He doesn't do well with storms and curtains blowing in the wind. He is getting used to walks and doesn't mind his gentle leader, which is great! With a standard leash and collar, he will pull and want to do his own thing. While playing in the backyard, we discovered that Dex likes drinking out of the hose. Dexter is house trained and crate trained. Now that Dex is in a stable environment he has regained his mighty appetite. When he misses you don't be surprised if articles of clothing turn up in his crate. He has a great big heart and having your scent close to him is a comfort.

Given Dexter's love of wrestling and playing full contact he should be in a home with older children. Screaming and crying will scare him and make him nervous. Dexter is taking men on a case by case basis. He needs people that will give him space and patience. He needs his new family to allow him to approach them first and get to know them at a slower pace. Trust is important to Dexter and it needs to earned, not expected. But once you've earned it, you have a love bug for life!!! With a little more time and exposure to kind people, he will come around and be the sweet social butterfly that I know he can be. He is trusting more and more everyday!
