My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! My name is Poppy (but my name in Korea is "Panther") and here is some info about me:

PHYSICAL INFO:

  • Breed: Shiba/Jindo mix

  • Age: 11 years (est. birth: Aug. 2014)

  • Gender: S. Female

  • Weight: 31 lbs (14kg)

  • Height: 54 cm (paws to top of my head)

  • Length: 71 cm (head to butt)

  • Current Location: S. KOREA

RESCUE STORY - I was found in a rural area of Paju, Korea, with another dog in the summer of 2017. We were sent to a high-kill shelter and listed for euthanasia, but thankfully, both of us were safely rescued by a rescue team. Since then, we’ve been living at their shelter, safe and cared for. Since no one knows my background—except me, of course—the rescue team assumes I may have been a dog tied up outside to guard a home or a farm. I recently moved to my rescuer's "free roaming" facility where I get to roam with other doggo's on the property all day (video).

TEMPERAMENT – Because I’ve had very limited experiences throughout my life, I can be a bit shy and cautious around new things—including new people. But I’m a very sweet and calm girl, so even when I’m hesitant around new people or environments, I am still a true gentle soul. I will need a calm, confident, dedicated adopter who will go at my pace as I learn to trust my new humans and surroundings. Once I come out of my shell, I'll be eager to soak up all the love and affection I've been missing my whole life. I would likely do very well in a home with a fellow calm, canine buddy to keep me company, as I've lived almost my whole life at a shelter filled with canine companions. I recently got groomed (as you can see in some of my videos and pics!) and am lookin' fresh and ready for my forever home!

ENERGY LEVEL – Low, I’m a mellow senior girl who prefers relaxing in the sunlight over intense activities. If you're looking for a zen couch companion, I'm your gal!

GETS ALONG WITH:

  • Kids – Unknown.

    • same with ALL dogs, if I am around children, I should be supervised! My humans need to advocate for my space and make sure I am respected :)

  • Dogs – Yes! I’m a submissive type of dog who loves peace!

  • Cats – Unknown.

PREY DRIVE - Unknown. I’m not too sure how I’ll react around cats/squirrels/rabbits etc., so my adopter needs to be prepared and willing to train me through these behaviours, should they arise.

TRAINING:

  • Leash skills – Truthfully, needs some work! (video, video 2) I have no problem wearing a walking harness, but I need more experience to build confidence when walking in unfamiliar places. That said, I’m very good at walking back toward my kennel—where I know I feel safe. I am looking for an adopter who can dedicate time to my confidence and leash-walking skills and who can be patient with me along the way.

  • House trained – Work in progress. Having only lived in a rescue shelter so far, I will need training for housebreaking. Frequent potty breaks and positive reinforcement will help me learn housetraining in my new home!

Please Note: WCP highly encourages adopters to do some research and training on their own before their dog arrives.

HEALTH NOTES:

  • I am spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. I will come to Canada with proof of all my vaccines and test records.

  • I will be tested for Heartworm etc. before flying to Canada.

  • I will have dental cleaning, if necessary, before flying to Canada.

    • NOTE: It is not uncommon for rescue dogs to require dental work after they are adopted. West Coast Paws does not cover the costs of dental work and/or vet visits. These costs are the financial responsibility of the adopter.

  • I am currently experiencing a mild ear infection due to an allergic reaction. I take Apoquel daily and clean my ears every day. My vet diagnosed it as a reaction to my current kennel environment, so my allergy symptoms will likely disappear when I am at home!

ADOPTION FEE:

  • My adoption fee is $616.00 CAD ($550.00 + GST & PST) including applicable taxes, which includes my airfare, if a flight volunteer is found directly to Vancouver.

The info included in each WCP bio is provided to us from the international rescuer. WCP does not have in-person access to overseas dogs and cannot always verify the accuracy of their descriptions, although we ask for video proof of a dog's attributes wherever possible. Every dog is an individual and can act differently in different situations based on the person(s) adopting them and the environment in which they live.
