My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! I’m Aponi — a sleek little black cat with a pretty special name. Aponi means “butterfly” in the Blackfoot language, and I like to think that fits me perfectly. Butterflies are all about hope and transformation… and that’s kind of my story too.

I used to be a stray, so sometimes I start out a little shy. New places and new people can make me pause for a moment while I figure things out. But don’t worry — I’m not hiding forever, I’m just doing a little Aponi investigation.

Here’s the fun part: once I decide you’re safe, I turn into a full-blown cuddle bug. Yep, the shy little butterfly suddenly becomes a snuggly shadow who wants pets, love, and a comfy spot near her person.

Think of me like a butterfly coming out of her cocoon. At first you might only see a little peek of me… but with a little patience, I spread my wings and show you just how sweet and affectionate I can be.

So if you’ve got a little patience and a lot of love, I promise I’ll turn into the cuddly companion you’ve been waiting for.

Love,
Aponi 🦋🐾An adoption application can be filled out on the DHS website https://www.dekalbhumanesociety.org/adopt. Dog adoption fees are $200.00 for all puppies and adult dogs. Seniors are a donation of choice.

We also believe in the importance of education about responsible pet ownership. We strive to educate our community about pet welfare, the benefits of spaying/neutering, and the prevention of animal abuse and neglect.

By adopting a pet from us, you are not only gaining a lifetime companion, but you are also contributing to our cause and helping us raise awareness. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these innocent animals.

The DeKalb Humane Society filed for our Certificate of Incorporation on December 23, 1975 and we were granted 501(c)3 status in March of 1976. We are committed to being a no-kill shelter and serving the DeKalb County area.
