Story
Duke (or Marty as his foster family has nicknamed him) is a 6-year-old Basset mix with a mellow, curious nature and a personality that slowly reveals itself to those willing to be patient. He can be shy and unsure at first, especially with new people or too much direct attention, but he’s been making steady progress and now happily takes treats from gentle hands. Duke may not have spent much time as an indoor dog before, but he’s learning the comforts of home one blanket at a time. When he feels safe, his sweet side comes out in the form of quiet companionship and devotion.Duke is a low-key charmer who loves other dogs, rarely barks, and has impeccable manners when it comes to food and furniture. He doesn’t jump on people, won’t counter-surf, and usually shadows his favorite humans. He enjoys walks and exercise, especially when he can really stretch his legs, and the more activity he gets, the better he does with his house-training routine. While he’s still working on potty habits and does best with structure and consistency, he is making progress and improving every day.Duke is not a fan of crates or confinement and will need a home willing to work around that while continuing positive training. He’s clingy in the best way, happiest curled up on the couch under a blanket, and will loyally wait outside the bathroom door like a devoted little bodyguard. He has a joyful, heart-melting “happy dance” that appears during dinnertime, transforming him into a completely different dog. Duke is looking for a patient, understanding home that sees his quirks not as flaws, but as part of what makes him uniquely lovable.Duke is a work in progress and needs a devoted patient family to help him grow into the best version of himself! Contact BROOD today to meet Duke! His adoption fee is $250.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Story
Cooper is a 2-year-old classic Basset Hound with a joyful spirit and a heart full of love. He’s wildly affectionate and happiest when he’s right beside his people — or better yet, curled up in your lap or tucked behind your legs. A true social butterfly, Cooper enjoys meeting new friends and following his family from room to room like a devoted little shadow. With bursts of playful energy followed by cozy crash sessions, he brings the perfect mix of fun and snuggles to daily life.Cooper loves chasing balls, working on treat puzzles, and enjoying frozen peanut butter bones to keep his busy mind engaged. He plays wonderfully with other dogs and would thrive in a home with a canine companion, though he could also be happy as an only dog soaking up all the attention. He currently lives with a cat and has made great progress learning not to chase, but he may need continued guidance in a new home. Because he’s a big, enthusiastic boy who can be a bit jumpy when excited, he would do best with children around 10 and up.He is housetrained, sleeps soundly through the night, and patiently waits to go out in the morning. Cooper walks fairly well on leash, though he’s still polishing his manners since he wants to greet everyone he sees. He can be vocal when excited or when left alone and shows some separation anxiety, so a home with patience and consistency — and possibly a yard — would help him continue to thrive. With his happy-go-lucky personality, eagerness to learn, and deep devotion to his people, Cooper is ready to make one lucky family incredibly happy. Contact BROOD today to meet Cooper! His adoption fee is $400.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Our adoption application is on the BROOD website at https://brood-va.org/adoptionapp/. Story
Molly is a 9-year-old Basset mix who showcases why seniors are the best. She has excellent house manners, is fully housetrained, and can be trusted loose in the home while you’re away. She loves napping on the couch! While Molly is quite happy relaxing and soaking up belly rubs, she still enjoys exercise and outings like daily walks and car rides. She walks nicely overall, but may pull a little when something interesting catches her nose. Her favorite treat is simple — ice cubes!Molly loves being close to her people and being included in whatever her family is doing. Like many loyal dogs who have not had much stability in their lives, Molly is protective of her home and is wary of strangers entering her space. She will bark when someone approaches the house and will need adopters who understand how to manage this behavior. Molly’s foster family is currently working with a trainer to set this good girl up for success in her forever home. Molly is a sweet and devoted companion who just needs the right environment, a little guidance, and patience. She deserves a committed family who will give her the love and stability she’s been waiting for. If you think Molly is a good fit for your home, contact BROOD today! Her adoption fee is $150.00. **Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Story
Benji is a 2-year-old Basset mix pup, bursting with energy and personality. This sweet, playful boy loves being around people and has never met a stranger he didn’t want to befriend. He’s curious about everything and enjoys watching the world go by from the window when he’s not busy playing. With his affectionate nature, Benji will happily hop into your lap for a quick cuddle before zooming off for his next adventure.Benji has a high activity level and thrives when he has plenty of opportunities to run, play, and explore. He enjoys romping around the fenced yard, going for neighborhood walks, and roughhousing with his canine friends. Benji is a quick learner who responds well to praise and redirection, and he’s already learning good manners like leaving slippers and socks alone when told “no.” His playful zoomies and goofy “army crawl” belly scratch are guaranteed to make his family laugh.Benji is housetrained and crate trained, and he even understands when it’s “bedtime.” He enjoys chew toys and bones and is a great eater who takes his daily medication without fuss. Benji has some skin allergies that require special food and a daily pill, but he handles his routine like a champ. Because of his energy and love of running, he would do best in a home with a fenced yard where he can safely burn off his enthusiasm and continue being the happy, lovable dog he is.This busy boy is looking for a family to keep up with his shenanigans. Could that be you? Contact BROOD today to meet Benji! His adoption fee is $250.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Story
Darwin is a 5-year-old Basset mix who perfectly embodies the phrase “good boy.” This mellow, affectionate guy has been an easy addition to his foster home and settles comfortably into daily life. He is fully housetrained, crate-trained, and sleeps quietly through the night. With his gentle nature, love for people, and charming smile, Darwin quickly wins hearts wherever he goes.Darwin’s favorite place to be is right next to his humans. In the evenings, he loves climbing into a lap for snuggles while the family relaxes and watches TV. He also enjoys spending time outside, happily following scents and keeping track of any small critters that wander through the yard. While he gets along well with other dogs, he’s fairly indifferent to them and would be just as content as an only dog soaking up all the attention.Darwin is sensitive to loud noises like thunderstorms and may look for a safe place to hide during storms. A cozy space, comforting routine, or a ThunderShirt can help him feel more secure when the weather gets rough. Despite those occasional worries, Darwin is a sweet, loving companion who mostly just wants to be near his people and share in everyday life. He’s ready to find a forever home where he can continue being the loyal, affectionate “Darlin’” he’s known to be.If you are looking for a total love bug, Darwin is the guy for you!
