Story
DUDE IS IN FOSTER.PLEASE EMAIL contact@animalaidsociety.org TO SCHEDULE A MEETING!Every once in awhile, a dog comes to us and they tug at our heartstrings more than usual. Whether it's their background, their condition or their fortitude. Such is the case with Dude - it's his fortitude that we all admire.Dude does not have normal front feet, which also makes his front legs a bit distorted and shorter than his back legs. Likely having this since birth, he has had to adjust his gait and movement. He will have xrays to see if they can make sense of what is going on.He is now on pain meds and joint supplements and we already see him feeling more relaxed. He also now has rugs in his run so that it's easier for him to walk around. When he sees you coming to sit next to him, he rolls on his back and puts his legs in the air! What appears awkward and perhaps painful to us, is just normal for Dude! He gets what he needs and seems to take pleasure in the small things. He adores when people take an extra minute to hang out with him. Dude loves belly rubs and sitting in the sun.Dude is just three-years-old and otherwise very healthy! He will never be one for long walks but he will always be one for snuggles and love!Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon!PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.

Story
As discarded hunting dogs, life hasn’t been easy for Heidi and Chaplin, but things are finally beginning to look up! Following a lifetime of neglect, they have received some much needed TLC, and are ready for their forever home. We do believe Heidi and Chaplin to be a bonded pair, so would like to find them a wonderful home for retirement where they can live out their golden years TOGETHER. These days, relaxing and soaking up the love and pampering they deserved all along, is the only thing on their agenda. Both pups are easy going and enjoy time outdoors in a fenced yard for sniffs, as well as, indoor time for ample naps. They lived their entire lives outdoors, so we are working on house training and have already seen great progress within the first couple of weeks. In the meantime, neither minds wearing a diaper. They do not jump up on furniture and are well behaved when left alone. They do not require crates, but will go in one if needed. Since neither pup is particularly confident on stairs - Chaplin being especially unsteady on them - access to staircases should be limited in order to prevent injury. In their foster home, a baby gate does the trick. A couple steps such as with a low deck are okay. Heidi and Chaplin are both lovely, gentle souls, with sweet honey-colored eyes that will melt your heart. Both Heidi and Chaplin are believed to be approximately 10 years old. They each weigh approximately 30 lbs., are spayed/ neutered, heartworm negative, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. They are located in Newport News, Virginia. If interested, please submit an application at www.homesfurhounds.org.

Story
Meet Dansby! Dansby is one of the very beautiful 3 year old hunting beagles we took in recently with her sister Elsa. As you can see in the pictures, she is quickly falling in love with being an inside family pet. She even snuggles on the couch with her poodle foster sister. Dansby is very sweet and a bit shy at first. She is adjusting well to being a pet and has done really well with housebreaking. She is also discovering toys and likes to carry her toys around and take them to her bed. She is a little bit of a "talker" and does bark at neighbors going by so she will need a bit of training. She will come to you when called and her barking seems to be something she does when she wants to play rather than an aggressive bark. Dansby is not as food motivated as most beagles and will sometimes not even eat all her food. She is a slow eater and has no food aggression. She is friendly and playful with people and with the foster poodle in the home. She was a little nervous at the vet's office but did fine. The longer she is here the more we see her wonderful, fun personality. She is vaccinated, heartworm negative, micro-chipped and will be spayed next week and ready to leave. If you are interested in meeting Dansby our application can be found at www.homesfurhoounds.org

Story
Angel Baby was surrendered to us in November after her mom passed away and her dad was unable to care for her any longer. She has gotten along well with other dogs at the shelter, but has a history of resource guarding from other dogs in the home, meaning she will need to be the only dog. She is very cat friendly and has lived with cats her whole life. She also walks very well on leash!Unfortunately, Angel Baby is nervous and overwhelmed in the shelter, and she shouldn’t have to spend her retirement in a kennel. Before entering our care, she did not go outside for potty breaks, walks, or yard time, and her story has really touched all of us at HHS. She still has a lot of life left in her and is sweet as can be, but she is desperate for a patient home where she can become the dog she’s meant to be. Angel Baby is currently living the good life in a foster home. If you are interested in meeting her, please email info@heritagehumane.org to set up an appointment. Once you see that sweet beagle face, we know you’ll fall in love!
