Emma has intense baby blue eyes that say love me! Her spotted muzzle, upright dark ears and tan-and-white body are made for scratches and hugs. Emma is likely about three years old and weighs about 32 pounds (she could add some weight). Who is Emma? She is amazing with my two border collies (male and female). Emma is very clearly a herder (see video) who likes to sit and wait for the fun, then joins in immediately. Lots of our time is spent running on the golf course, in my backyard and on the beach, along with swimming in the nearby pond. Emma loves playtime in the house but is also happy to rest in her dog bed, chew a bone, or just close her eyes. She has met other dogs, large and small, and is friendly (no exposure to cats while in my care). Emma has grabbed the ball a few times but decided early on that her best play with my dogs was chasing them, then circling around and watching them, waiting for the fun to begin again. What can Emma do? She has 100% recall and never fails to come to me when called. We frequently have deer and squirrels in our neighborhood; Emma never chases them and, if interested, comes immediately when I call her name. Her house training is impeccable (once Iearned her preference is to be off leash and to go in a certain spot of my yard). She is good on leash (all three dogs walk well together), although we were told she was almost never leashed. Emma loves when I put her collar on in the morning and her glow collar on in the evening (she puts her little face forward). Grooming is a breeze as she easily lets me brush her. Her demeanor is calm when in the house and active when outside the house. Emma loves her bone and has not been destructive with chewing; I picked up shoes when she first came as a foster but no longer bother. Emma listens to sit, down, wait and is treat motivated. There is absolutely no food guarding. She has met children in the neighborhood and seems good. Emma enjoys learning and using the limited agility equipment I own. Concerns about Emma are all about gaining her trust. She barks at visitors but warms up as she gets to know them. Emma slept in my basement under the stairs for about a week although she would join us during the day. The second week she came upstairs to mybedroom and went in the closet for a few nights. We then gave Emma a few pillows on the bed, she felt safe, enclosed, and now spends the night with me and my two border collies. Emma likes to jump at your face if you lean in too close (not nipping, just licking with her tongue). It is a habit we have been working on (I hold her collar when I pet her) and she is getting so much better. She likes to push her way in to me in the morning in bed or just sitting on the sofa but listens to reprimands from my other two dogs (or I just gently tell her to get back or off). Emma needs her own person she can trust and who will love her. She is smart and could easily learn to play with balls or frisbees and/or benefit from agility training but her herding instinct is so strong she might be better with a playmate who does the catching for her. She quickly learns day-to-day routines. Our rides in the car have been smooth, stress free for all. It isimportant that Emma is given time to show you what she has to offer. She is an amazing girl who deserves patience, love and the best life going forward! Emma doesn't require a fence unless you live near a very busy road. She enjoys playtime with other dogs so having another dog in the home is a big plus. She has been around children older than 4 years old and seems to do well. Emma is not a dog for first time dog owners and herding dog experience is best to understand her behavior.
