Daily Routine Lumberjack is up and ready by 7:00 a.m. and kicks off the morning with breakfast before heading out for his walk — though if you asked him, he'd vote for an earlier start. Two walks a day is ample for him, and he'd likely make an excellent hiking buddy in cooler weather. He likes to be at the front of the pack and pulls a little, though it's more enthusiasm than bad manners. He shows zero interest in chasing birds or squirrels. At night he's happy to sleep on the floor or a dog bed, but his preference is clearly to be in bed with his people — and if he can tunnel under the covers, all the better. Crates are not his thing. No snoring, no drama. Personality Lumberjack is calm, confident, and genuinely sweet. He charmed the DPS volunteers at intake, coming up to every single one and politely asking for pets and love. He's independent (not demanding) but punctuates his day with warm, affectionate check-ins — he wags his tail at every person he meets, loves a good brushing session (even though he doesn't seem to shed much at all), and is happiest simply being part of the household routine. He doesn't need much entertainment; your presence is enough. And then there's the lap hug. If you're sitting and Lumberjack decides it's time for some affection, he may just walk over, drape his front legs around your hips, and lean in close. It's exactly as sweet as it sounds. He also has a gorgeous, soulful howl that emerges when he hears sirens. It's more endearing than disruptive — he's a dog who appreciates his people and isn't shy about saying so. Social Skills Lumberjack is friendly and relaxed with the other resident dog in his foster home — calm curiosity, tail wagging, good manners. He reads canine cues well, backing off when needed. He does have a small soft spot when the other dog gets all the attention — he'll gently insert himself into the middle of things with a quiet 'don't forget about me.' Hard not to find it charming. On leash, he's a work in progress around other dogs — he can be barky when he spots them on walks, and he'll do best with an experienced adopter or a one committed to working with a trainer. He's smart and handler-focused, which gives him a real advantage. With people, Lumberjack is a lover through and through. He announces visitors with a bark or two, but the moment someone steps inside he's perfectly happy to be greeted and petted — no warm-up period needed. Training & Home Life Lumberjack is a quick study who genuinely wants to please, and pairing him with positive reinforcement early on will set him up for real success. He's not a huge fan of being left home alone and will let off some of his soulful howls, so an adopter who is ready to do some alone-time training will be ideal. He's a quick adjuster in the car — anxious on his first couple trips after going into foster, but quickly figured out the drill and now simply settles in and enjoys the journey. Why Lumberjack? He settled in fast, loves his walks, and asks for very little beyond your company, the occasional good brushing, and ideally a spot in your bed. Steady, sweet, and solid as his name suggests — Chonk by nickname, Lumberjack by name, and an absolute treasure by nature. Low prey drive, medium energy, and happiest with people — Lumberjack is an easygoing dog in a scruffy, charming package. April 7, 2026, 3:47 pm
