Story
Simpson has been placed on FINAL as of 10/23/2026. He must be pulled by 5:00 PM on 10/30/2026 or he will be humanely euthanized. While in the shelter, Simpson has consistently displayed behaviors consistent with a Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) level of 4, both in and out of his kennel. He appears to be experiencing significant fear and stress in the shelter environment. While in the yard, Simpson was observed retreating, hiding from staff, and remaining tucked away rather than approaching or engaging with people. During an interaction in the yard, Simpson displayed whale eye toward a staff member and began growling. The growling continued until the staff member left the area. This response indicates significant discomfort in that interaction and should be taken seriously when developing an appropriate handling, management, and placement plan. Despite his significant fear around people, Simpson demonstrated more positive social behaviors during an introduction to a helper dog. He approached and sniffed the dog, initiated play, and ran alongside the dog. However, his positive interaction with the helper dog does not necessarily indicate how he will respond to all dogs or in other settings. Appropriate introductions and ongoing supervision would be important in any future placement. Simpson has continued to demonstrate difficulty tolerating staff handling, and staff have been unable to complete handling procedures due to his fear and discomfort. He did allow for one staff member to eventually allow soft petting on his shoulder, but his body was tense. Further handling was not tried. While sitting next to this staff member, another staff member went close to him and he started growling. His consistent high FAS scores, avoidance behaviors, and growling in response to a particular staff interaction indicate that he will require a patient, carefully managed approach. His behavior may change depending on the environment, the people present, and the level of pressure placed on him. Further assessment in a quieter, lower-stress environment may help clarify his needs and support his progress. Simpson is available for adoption or rescue with a waiver. An adopter or rescue partner must commit to and pull Simpson by 5:00 PM on 10/30/2026, or he will be humanely euthanized.
