. 🐾 MEET THE RIVERBED BUNCH! You may have seen these guys posted on Leigh's Lost and Found, they were in a river bed for weeks. Several kind strangers were feeding them with the hopes that someone could step in. As soon as we heard their story, we knew we had to do what we could. Because these dogs were in survival mode, we were thrilled to collaborate with the amazing Brittany Scherff with ERC - Emergency Rescue Consultancy. If you’re not familiar, please go and follow her page and support her. She is skilled to be beyond measure when it comes to lost dog recovery and trapping dogs. Meet Arroyo, Rio, and Laguna, 3 Chihuahua puppies with big names to come with their little bodies. These puppies need urgent foster homes where they can be safe, cared for, and loved These three little boys were not out there alone, and the reason they probably were able to stay alive as they had a protector also in a compact but fierce little body under 20 pounds!! Meet Betty Boop! Betty Boop is a senior little lady with a Frenchie-meets-mini-boxer look and a whole lot of charm. She deserves a medal for keeping these three little boys safe! We’re urgently looking for fosters for all four dogs. You don’t need to adopt to help fostering gives them a safe home while we find the right next step.

Meet George! 🐾 George is an approximately 3-year-old Boxer/Mountain Cur mix who is looking for a fresh start and a family to call his own! George recently came to us after a change in his previous owner’s living circumstances made it impossible for him to stay. Unfortunately, the transition to shelter life has been a little overwhelming for this sweet boy. He’s understandably timid and anxious in this unfamiliar environment, but underneath those nerves is an incredibly affectionate dog who just wants to be loved! Despite having a difficult time adjusting, George makes friends easily and absolutely soaks up any attention he can get. He’s the kind of dog who really seems to appreciate a little kindness and reassurance, and we suspect that getting back into a comfortable, predictable home environment would do wonders for his confidence. According to his previous owner, George has experience living primarily outdoors, walks on a leash, rides well in the car, and has done well around children. He has also lived around other dogs, although he reportedly does not get along with male dogs who display assertive or dominant behaviors. Because of this, we would recommend a meet-and-greet with any resident dogs to ensure everyone is comfortable and compatible. As a Boxer/Mountain Cur mix, George may benefit from a home that can offer him regular exercise, mental enrichment, and plenty of opportunities to spend time with his people. More importantly, he needs someone willing to give him a little patience and understanding as he settles into his new surroundings. George has already experienced some big changes in his life, and we’d love nothing more than to see him find the stability, companionship, and security he deserves. Leo has been waiting since July 29, 2025. More than a year. And somehow, this happy, goofy, incredibly lovable boy has been almost completely overlooked. Leo is a 3-year-old with a French Bulldog mom and a dad who remains a bit of a mystery. Whatever his exact recipe, we do know one thing for sure: **Leo is a whole lot of fun.** He is vibrant, playful, affectionate, and absolutely convinced that everyone he meets is his new best friend. He doesn’t know a stranger, and his enthusiasm for life is impossible not to smile at. Leo has always lived as an apartment dog, but his previous family realized that he would thrive in a home with more room to run, play, and burn off some of that endless energy. He loves to explore, loves attention, and would be happiest with someone who wants a dog to actually *do things* with. Walks, playtime, adventures, backyard zoomies—Leo is ready for all of it. He has always been an only pet and has a strong prey drive, so a home without cats would be best. He came to us with very little experience when it came to the basics, but **he's already come a long way.** Leo now walks nicely on a leash, and he's learning more every day. He is still working on house training and crate training, so his future family will need to be patient and consistent as he continues learning. He does know how to sit, and we're confident that with the right person and some structure, he'll keep making progress. The hardest part about Leo isn't finding something lovable about him—it's understanding why no one has chosen him yet. After more than a year in the shelter, this boy deserves so much more than being passed by. He deserves a family who will appreciate his goofy personality, give him plenty of outlets for his energy, and celebrate all the little milestones as he learns. **Leo has been waiting long enough. Maybe it's time someone finally takes a second look. ❤️**

Hi, I’m Cheerio! I came from a really hard place—one of nearly 30 dogs rescued from an abusive and neglectful situation. I was tied to a heavy chain with very little food, and when I arrived here I weighed barely 30 lbs and had sores from sitting in the same spot for too long. I'm a bit picky about other dogs but the shelter recommends multiple meetings with another dog to safely introduce us. Even with everything I’ve been through, I’m a good boy with so much potential. I’ve been working with a trainer and I respond really well to training. I’m not a big fan of new people at first, but give me a little time (and some treats!) and I’ll be your loyal best friend—I would never turn on my person. I’m protective of the people I love, but deep down I’m a big softy who enjoys kisses, tug-of-war, and going on adventures. I’ve never known what it’s like to have a real home, and I’ve been waiting here for over a year and a half. I know my perfect match may take time, but I’m worth it—and I’m ready for someone who’s willing to give me the life I’ve always deserved. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets!
