Story
Leo is a vibrant, joyful 2-year-old with a French Bulldog mom—and a dad who remains a bit of a mystery! He’s full of energy, endlessly playful, and has a personality that lights up any room. Leo has always been an apartment dog, but his previous family realized he would thrive in a home where he could have more space to run, play, and burn off all that energy. Leo is incredibly social—he loves everyone he meets and doesn’t know a stranger. He’s always been an only pet and would do best in a home without cats, as he has a strong prey drive. He’s happiest when he has a chance to play and explore, so an active adopter who can give him plenty of attention, walks, and playtime will be ideal. Leo is a true blank canvas when it comes to life skills. He’s never been on a leash, isn’t house trained, and has never been crate trained. He does know how to sit, but he’ll need patient, consistent guidance to help him learn the basics and develop into the well-mannered companion he’s capable of becoming. This energetic, affectionate pup will thrive with a family who can commit to training, structure, and lots of playtime. If you’re ready for a happy, playful, loveable bundle of energy who will keep you laughing and smiling every day, Leo is ready to meet you!

Story
Who’s looking for a super cute bestie? Because this little dude is ready to clock in for the position. Monkey is the kind of pup who believes every dog he meets is simply a friend he hasn’t played with yet. He’s bouncy, playful, and full of happy wiggles, but he’s also a champion cuddler once the zoomies are out of his system. Basically, he’s the whole package—fun, affectionate, and at that perfect age where he’s ready to grow up with his very own person. Monkey is healthy, happy, and ready to start his next adventure. His vaccinations are up to date and he’s been wormed. When he heads home with his new family, he’ll also be microchipped and registered, plus he’ll come with a neuter certificate to be used locally that covers the cost. All that’s missing is the human who realizes their life could use a little more tail wagging and laughter. Fill out an application today and come meet the little guy who might just steal your heart. 🐾

Story
Meet Chico, a neutered male lab/pit mix that is 2-4 yrs old and weighs 70 lbs.Chico is friendly, but he is very hyper. He knows some commands but will knock people down. He will need work on walking on a leash.Chico is kennel trained but does tear them up if he is left alone too long, as he does have separation anxiety. He has been around children, but due to his high energy, older children would probably be best. He would do best in a home with no other dogs and no cats because he tends to chase them. ##2563635##

Story
Hi, I’m Proctor! I came to the shelter with my 11 siblings (yes… all 11 of them!), and we were all black-and-white spotted like little Holstein cows. We arrived when we were just 6 weeks old, and now my brother Gordon and I are the last two still waiting—almost 7 months old and hoping our turn is coming soon. Growing up in a shelter hasn’t been easy, but it hasn’t stopped me from being a great pup. I walk nicely on a leash, know how to sit, and get along wonderfully with other animals and kids. I’m the perfect mix of calm and playful, and all I really want is love, affection, and a place to finally call home. If you're interested in adopting one, please fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve an appointment time. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure the puppy will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! #adoptdontshop ##2508492##

Story
Hi, I’m Cheerio! I came from a really hard place—one of nearly 30 dogs rescued from an abusive and neglectful situation. I was tied to a heavy chain with very little food, and when I arrived here I weighed barely 30 lbs and had sores from sitting in the same spot for too long. Because of my past, I need a home with no children or other animals where I can finally feel safe. Even with everything I’ve been through, I’m a good boy with so much potential. I’ve been working with a trainer and I respond really well to training. I’m not a big fan of new people at first, but give me a little time (and some treats!) and I’ll be your loyal best friend—I would never turn on my person. I’m protective of the people I love, but deep down I’m a big softy who enjoys kisses, tug-of-war, and going on adventures. I’ve never known what it’s like to have a real home, and I’ve been waiting here for over a year and a half. I know my perfect match may take time, but I’m worth it—and I’m ready for someone who’s willing to give me the life I’ve always deserved. If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment.
