Meet 3+ year old Kiwi! FOSTER TO ADOPT Kiwi is a sweet, affectionate bully mix with a playful streak and a heart full of love for her people. Tennis balls are the pinnacle of canine joy as far as she's concerned, and she'll happily fetch one for you (though "drop it" is still under negotiation). When she's not playing, she's nuzzling up close for quality cuddle time. She's adjusting beautifully to indoor life. She's figured out the doggie door for potty breaks, isn't destructive around the house, and enjoys her growing collection of plush toys, chews, and food puzzles. She shares her treasures without fuss and settles nicely in a crate when someone's home. A few things she's still working on: resisting the urge to attempt a crate escape when left alone, and accepting that snacks left on counters are not, in fact, generous offerings from the universe. Good afternoon, my name is Russell and I'm a Wilderness Explorer. Are you in need of a new buddy today? I'm a 1-year-old, Bull Terrier mix and I weigh around 70 pounds. I'm a happy go lucky, energetic, and playful guy. My friends here at PHS say that I'm super affectionate when cuddling and a full body player with equal parts goofball energy. If you are looking for a happy go lucky dude that loves nothing more than running, playing with soft toys and frolicking in the kiddie pool here at the shelter then look no further! I'm a total sweetheart; I just have to get my wiggles out first! If you are looking for puppy kisses and wiggly tails, I can deliver! Russell ID# A0978323 I recently went on a sleepover! Here's how I did: Russell rode calmly in the car and confidently explored his new surroundings. By day two he was settling down on a dog bed on his own, and even the blender didn't faze him. He had zero accidents, slept through the night in his crate, and relaxes in it during the day too. This boy loves to play! He had a blast chasing balls in the backyard and adores soft toys (so much that he "loved" them all to pieces). He also enjoys gentle pets when he's calm and our eight-year-old son was happy to get some pets in. His training at PHS really shined through. He walks nicely on leash once settled, knows most of his commands, and quickly learned the kitchen and couch were off-limits. Like any puppy, he'll test boundaries for food or snuggles, but he responds well to consistent cues. Russell likes having his people close. He may whine when someone leaves, but he settles quickly once a familiar person sits with him, and he prefers company in the yard. With patience and consistency, this can keep improving. Russell will thrive with an active family who can offer plenty of exercise, clear boundaries, and help building confidence with alone time. Meet Roo, the adorable kangaroo-like pup! Roo came into the Shelter as a stray found dragging a blue rope. With his stray hold expired, he is now eligible for adoption. We are not sure of Roo’s exact breed or age so we just took a good guess.Roo is an adolescent in every sense of the world – exuberant, playful and eager to learn. He has been social with people and dogs alike. He would likely enjoy a canine playmate in the home after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter. Roo can sometimes be mouthy when he is excited. Adopters should have some toys and appropriate chews handy to redirect Roo’s mouthing behavior. Roo is still perfecting life skills and manners like potty training, leash walking and age appropriate socialization. Adopters should plan on bonding with him through positive reinforcement based training to help him learn to grow into a good canine citizen. We do not have any history of Roo with children or cats. Roo is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. I am at Oakland Animal Services in kennel Dog F:5Bennie is a 2-year-old, 46-pound pittie mix who's really come into his own. Once a little unsure, he now happily plays fetch and flops over for full-body wiggles. On field trips, Bennie enjoys running on the beach, exploring trails, and greeting people with a wagging tail. He walks nicely on leash, often checking over his shoulder to make sure you're still with him. Squirrels definitely bring out his bouncy side, but he responds well to hand signals for "sit," and is a quick learner when treats are involved. After an adventure, he's happy to nap in the car. Bennie may be a little hard of hearing. Our volunteer groomer reported he startles easily, but recovers quickly with a little reassurance. Otherwise, this sweet and cuddly guy was wonderful for his bath and nail trim. While Bennie has been social and relaxed meeting other dogs, he had a disagreement during a playgroup session and might be best as the only dog in his future home. That way he can focus on what he loves most: exploring with his people, chasing tennis balls, and claiming a well-earned spot in your lap.
