Nemo is a 1 year-old 40 pound tan and white Carolina dog that was dropped off at the Mesquite Animal shelter on 10/6. Besides the pointed ears of the typical Carolina dog he has a curly tail with a white tip on the end. You may notice he has some white at the bottom of his right eye that gives him character but doesn’t appear to affect his vision. It was difficult getting his attention because his sense of smell had him investigating the yard with his nose. When I finally got his attention, he was sweet, gentle and friendly. He does sit for treats and takes them gently. He still has some puppy-like behaviors... he’s only a year old! He walks a OK on a leash. He did his business as soon as he got into the yard. He would like nothing better than to be cherished. He would love to get outside, soak up some rays and take in some smells and then go inside to enjoy family time and possibly watch some TV.

Think of things that are precious and then add this sweet girl to that list! Precious is a six year-old 49 pound Carolina Dog that came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter as a stray on 10/29. She’s an attractive girl with stand-up ears and hazel eyes that fit perfectly with her coloring. She’s lively, animated, sociable, alert, curious and affectionate. She kept looking out the gate… probably looking for her owners. A tall secure fence would be advised. She does jump on you and would need to learn not to do this. She ran back-and-forth in the yard until she realized I had treats. Then staying next to me and the treats became a priority! Watch out for kisses! She walks okay on a leash, and she did her business in the yard. She would like to get out for fresh air and exercise and then come in to be with your family during family time.

Toast, who is male Basenji mix, has been patiently waiting for his forever family while so many other dogs have come and gone. Every day he wakes up hopeful that today might be the day someone chooses him. Unfortunately, that day hasn’t come yet. The truth is, Toast is an incredible dog. Toast is approx two years old, fully vetted, which means he has been neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, microchipped, and is current on all preventatives. He weighs about 45 pounds. Extremely well mannered and knows several commands. He is also housebroken and crate trained, making him ready to transition into a loving home. Toast gets along well with other dogs and children, but because of his enthusiasm and energy, he would do best in a home where family members are steady and firm on their feet. He is an active young dog who needs daily walks, exercise, and a securely fenced yard where he can run and play. And when we say run, we mean RUN! 🏃‍♂️💨 Toast is quite literally one of the fastest dogs we have ever seen. Watching him stretch his legs across the yard is truly something to behold. He absolutely loves car rides, adventures, and spending time with his foster brothers and sisters. Because he enjoys canine companionship so much, a home with another friendly dog would be ideal for him. Despite all of these wonderful qualities, Toast continues to wait. He doesn’t know that his adoption fee has been lowered. He doesn’t know that we’re sharing his story again in hopes that the right person or family will see it. He only knows that every day he has so much love to give and no family of his own to give it to. Please help us change that. Meet Kira! Kira is a beautiful, approximately 8-month-old female Kelpie/Basenji mix weighing 36 pounds. Found near Steger Towne Crossing in Rockwall on 8/12/26 and never reclaimed, Kira is ready for a fresh start! Although initially shy, she has a sweet nature and a curious personality. Kira loves discovering new things, responds well to leash guidance, and enjoys learning! She would thrive with an experienced, patient adopter who can provide structure, positive reinforcement, and opportunities to build her confidence. Kira does well with tolerant dogs, and a meet and greet with resident dogs is recommended. She is best suited for a home with children ages 16 and older. Her adoption fee is $125. Kira is spayed, microchipped, current on rabies and age-appropriate boosters, and heartworm negative. An approved adoption application is required before scheduling a meet and greet.
