Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Victoria is a gorgeous, midnight black chihuahua mix. She is approximately 4 years old and originally came into rescue with 4 very tiny puppies. Victoria was a street dog, fighting each day for her survival and the survival of her pups. Living by her wits and trusting no one except herself and her own instincts. Once Victoria’s ups were adopted into their forever homes, her own anxiety and fear became apparent. We decided to hold off on her adoption to spend some time with her one-on-one. She did not trust humans. She would not allow anyone to come near here, touch or pert her. She had to be chased and cornered to do something as simple as applying flea medication. This was highly traumatic and stressful to her as well as her foster mom. With much time and attention, Victoria has shown amazing improvement. She is not a “normal” dog and most likely never will be. The scars of the street are healed, but are obviously still present. She will be successful in the right forever home with the right family. Patience and love are the name of the game. Vitoria does like attention – on her own terms. She does not want to be held & cuddled – but she may curl up next to you or hang over your shoulder from her perch on the back of the couch. She enjoys being petted behind her ears and having her neck scratched. If you try to get down close to kiss the top of her head – she bolts like lightning. She has learned the stay command when being leashed for travel or when you must reach her to apply flea meds. “Morning Victoria” is a sight to behold and a joy to experience. Victoria will sleep on the bed and when she sees you are awake, she will come over for pets & a little bit of cuddling. It is like she is a completely different dog! She will drape herself over your body for a booty scratch and arch her neck so you can reach her. Once you move to get out of bed, “Morning Victoria” is gone, just like darkness disappearing with the sunrise. We feel that “Morning Victoria” is the dog Victoria was meant to be, had she not suffered through her street life and the hardships that damaged her original self. The fact that we are able to glimpse this part of her personality each morning is truly a gift. Victoria is virtually housebroken. She goes potty outside and uses potty pads while her foster mom is at work. She sleeps through the night without issue. Please know that there may be accidents when she moves into her forever home. It will be very stressful for her, and she may fall back into some of the fear she experienced while on the street. So many new things at once can be overwhelming, even for humans. Once again – patience is required here. She has the ability to be a magnificent dog, but her family has to have the patience to grant her the grace to move forward. Victoria is not fond of children. They move too fast and can be loud & unpredictable. They terrify her. She will warm to strangers slowly. She does love other dogs and to see her running & playing makes you forget for a minute that she has any issues at all. A playful, confident dog will be mandatory in Victoria’s forever home. It brings her so much joy – and after all she has been through, she deserves every ounce of joy she can get. Victoria has a strong prey drive – beware all rabbits and squirrels and low-flying birds! She will stalk and then give chase. She has never caught anything, but her will is strong and she is ultra-focused when something is in her sights. In her foster home, sometimes crashing right into the fence is the only thing that has stopped her pursuit, which further enforces the requirement for Victoria to have a fenced yard. Despite working with her, Victoria does not like the leash. She will alligator roll, perhaps walk a few steps to get you to lower your guard, but she is truly looking for an escape route. She is as fast as a bullet and if she gets loose, she is gone baby gone. Victoria is considered a flight risk and will require a well-maintained, physically strong, minimum 5 ft tall fenced in yard. No invisible fences can be considered. If you have an adults-only home, another playful pup, a secure yard and lots of patience and love – please consider Victoria. Victoria is spayed, up to date with vaccines, microchipped, flea/worm treated and tested neg. for heartworm. Her adoption fee is $350Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.June 2, 2023, 9:12 am
