Meet Sky: A Tiny Heart Learning to Trust
Some dogs are a 'turn-key' addition to a home; Sky is a labor of love. He is a passion project for the patient soul, a tiny survivor who has been meticulously transformed from a terrified shadow into the scruffy rockstar you see today. Rescued from a traumatic hoarding situation in Tijuana, Sky’s progress over the last year has been nothing short of a masterpiece of resilience.
Because of his past, Sky has had to be his own protector. He is a survivor of an environment where he was physically forced against his will, leading him to defend himself. Depsite it all, he is a sweet boy who desperately wants to belong.
His Year-Long Remarkable Progress
Under the patient care of a professional trainer, Sky is rewriting his story. The dog who once spent his days hiding now:
Wags his tail as he follows his person from room to room.
Seeks out "couch time" to snuggle up with his foster and resident dogs.
Greets guests with curiosity instead of disappearing into the shadows (especially if cheese is involved!).
Accepts gentle handling and head pets on his own terms, showing just how far his brave heart has come.
The Ideal Home: A Sanctuary-like Safe Space
The right home for Sky is a sanctuary-like safe space. We are looking for an 'artisan' of patience—someone who finds deep fulfillment in the small wins. Sky is for the person who understands that trust isn’t given; it’s built, brick by tiny brick.
The Apprenticeship: Because Sky looks to his peers for cues, a confident resident dog is his non-negotiable mentor.
The Continued Work: His grooming and harness training are ongoing 'studio sessions.' His new family will need to be ready to continue the reward-based work his trainer has started, ensuring his 'armor' stays off for good.
The "Slow and Steady" Approach: His new family must understand that Sky still flinches and may dart away at quick movements. He needs someone who respects his boundaries and won't expect him to be comfortable with physical handling. Ultimately, Sky will set the pace.
Patience for the Great Outdoors: Sky is a master of his puppy pads! He is currently working on feeling comfortable with a harness, so he can eventually explore the world on a leash. (The suburbs are an ideal place for Sky, unless you’re looking for an indoor only apartment dog!)
Why Sky?
Sky is a "compact" companion with a massive spirit. Watching him go from a terrified shadow to a dog who willingly sits by your side is one of the most rewarding experiences a foster or adopter can have. He is a testament to the fact that while the past can leave scars, the future can be filled with love.
Currently fostered in Philadelphia, PA
Vaccinated for rabies, DA2PP, and bordetella. Neutered, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Current on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.
To apply for Sky, visit our website (www.waggytailrescue.org) for an adoption application. It is important to fill out an application as soon as possible for consideration, and we require a complete application for you to meet an animal. We are currently unable to respond to general email inquiries as an all-volunteer run rescue. If the dog is on our website, they are still available.
Waggytail Rescue CANNOT guarantee the exact age of any adoptable dog, or final size of any of our adoptable puppies. We rely on the information provided to us by veterinarians, shelters, owner surrenders and other circumstances bringing the dog into our rescue.
