Story
Jack is a 4 year old chihuahua who came to CARA when we pulled him from Lee County Animal control. Jack was found as a stray and unfortunately was found to be positive for heartworm disease. Jack has since completed his Heartworm treatment but needs to be retested in 6 months, as the heartworms are still slowly dying inside of him - so in turn he is still testing positive. Jack sadly had such severe heartworm disease that he developed pulmonary hypertension a pretty typical side effect of severe heartworm load. He is thankfully doing so well, with medication on board and it is possible the hypertension will go away completely. He could also have to manage that life-long. If you do not know much about heartworm disease please research to be fully aware of the life long damage it can cause to a dog, internally. Thankfully most dogs do very well post heartworm treatment and they deserve to live long happy lives with mindful owners! The rescue took Jack to the cardiologist where we had a pleasant visit and were told Jack is doing well post HW treatment, despite the hypertension. Mainly we are looking to find an adopter that is going to keep Jack under low activity for at least 6 months (or until he test negative for HW's) Jack is in the most amazing foster home. They have taken care of him through his heartworm treatment, neuter and dental. Now Jack is ready to find a home! We have learned while he has been in foster, that he is a little sour patch kid......but more sweet than sour! Jack likes to hoard socks. He will exchange your sock for a treat! Jack likes dogs, but can be scared of big ones at times. Jack is okay with cats. Jack is best with older kids. Jack NEEDS a fenced yard for his safety. Jack is so sweet and affectionate, and has many little quirks! He is not okay being crated. He would adapt well to most homes! If interested in learning more about Jack please call or email us! Or simply apply if you would like the opportunity to meet this special guy!!

Ranger (Black and White dog) is a five-year-old, five-pound, Chihuahua. The pair is good with all dogs, all cats, and mature kids ten and older. This adorable, bonded pair of lapdogs go together, and we will not consider splitting them up! Pee Wee is missing teeth and due to neglect is heartworm positive that we are currently treating. He loves everyone he meets as does his buddy Ranger. This pair are not yet housetrained. Their foster writes: "These are great little dogs! Loving and gentle. Ranger wants to be with humans all the time when he's not with Pee Wee. They sleep quietly in a crate all night. Their ideal home is someone at home most of the day, has a fenced yard, and lots of soft blankets to snuggle in." A perfect pair for a mature person or couple! Apply at crisisdogsnc.org. We reply only to completed applications, no calls, no emails. Excellent vet references and a virtual home visit required. Your prior or current dog must be on year-round heartworm prevention. We transport by land or air whenever possible. Unless there is definitive documentation our breed assessments are based on visual appearances.June 5, 2023, 5:25 pm

We are only able to respond to questions once a completed application is received https://crisisdogsnc.org/dog-adoption/. We do not respond to questions about our dogs sent through email or social media.   Scooter is a nine-week-old, two pound, Chihuahua and Jack Russel Terrier mix. What can be said about an adorable puppy except that is he is cute, healthy and cuddly. We rescued Scooter from being sold at random. He is now in foster, he is good with dogs, good with mature kids ten ad over who can respect a delicate small puppy. We do not know his mix for certain, he will be small even when fully grown. We will fully vet him as per contract. Please consider your forward-looking plans prior to applying. This dog is a fifteen-year commitment. Apply at crisisdogsnc.org.
