We do our best to provide information that will help determine if the animal might be a good fit for you. Please note that behaviors may change in a home environment. We also ask our applicants to assume that any animal they adopt from us will need to be potty-trained and learn house manners, although this is not always the case. In most cases, the listed breeds are also a best guess. Our online animal bios are designed to provide as much information as possible and answer some anticipated questions. We do not have the resources to respond to emails with more specific questions. We are receiving an unusually high number of applications at this time! Applications are reviewed as they are received, but we do not select adopters on a first-come basis. Our job is to ensure each pet is placed into the best fit home for them and that adopters are paired with an animal that is a good fit for their lifestyle. All animals will stay on Petfinder until they are “pending adoption”. Therefore, if an animal is still listed, we are still accepting applications for him/her! Please do not send inquiries about a specific animal's availability as this can change quickly over the course of the day. The fastest way to get a response is to simply submit an application! We will do our best to notify you by email if the pet(s) you are interested in are no longer available. New animals are posted daily, so please let us know if another furry friend peak your interest (there is no need to fill out a second application)! Fill out the application (DOG: https://service.sheltermanager.com/asmservice?account=dr1937&method=online_form_html&formid=26, CAT: https://service.sheltermanager.com/asmservice?account=dr1937&method=online_form_html&formid=41, EXOTICS: https://us14b.sheltermanager.com/onlineform_view?formid=46) completely. Every question must be answered, and it must be signed.-Applicants must be 21+ years old and live within a 50-mile radius of our shelter at 22415 Groesbeck Hwy, Warren 48089.-You must identify at least 1 animal that you are interested in.Once your application is received, it will be assigned to one of our volunteer Adoption Counselors who will follow-up with the applicant who is the best fit within a few days, or to discuss other options. It could take up to a couple of weeks for you to receive a final disposition on your application so there is no need to check on the status.-Introductions will be scheduled by appointment only, 30 minutes per appointment. The entire household, including current dogs, must be present for the appointment. (Note: Please do not bring your dogs if you are meeting cats!). The introductions will take place outside in our parking lot (or in our cat room if you're meeting cats).-We will continue to perform vet checks for current and prior pets in the household.-Finalizing the adoption will also be scheduled by appointment.Thank you for your understanding.

Story
Meet Kingston the 5yr Chow! He came into our care after his elderly owner was having some medical issues. He was scheduled to be euthanized, but we were able to save him with less than an hour to spare. Kingston has been through a lot of change in the past month, but he has been adjusting very well. We are so happy we were able to save this sweet boy! Prior to coming into our care, we were told that Kingston had shown some reactive behaviors (growling, lunging) to people other than his mom. We believe this was mainly due to him being protective of his home, as well as his body language not being read correctly. He has not shown aggressive behaviors towards any of us during his stay, however we are sure to respect his boundaries. While he loves being around his people, he does not like being smothered in attention or being grabbed at. He does show he is uncomfortable by becoming stiff, licking his lips and avoiding eye contact during these situations. However, we do not believe he is an aggressive dog by any means. These behaviors are common with Chows- they are sassy, aloof with strangers, stubborn and independent. With this being said, Kingston has proven to be very easy-going. He just needs a family familiar with this Chow temperament, or a family willing to follow his boundaries. Because of this temperament, Kingston needs a home without children. Kingston is being socialized with lots of doggy friends here. He would prefer to be the only dog in the household; however, he would do fine with a medium/large breed sibling who gives him his space! Kingston does not like dominant dogs, energetic dogs or xl breed males. He is a very sweet boy and loves playing outside! He would love a fenced backyard to sniff around in, however due to his easy-going personality, this is not a requirement. He is neutered, up to date on vaccines and HW-. He is also housebroken and is working on crate training. Does Kingston sound like a good fit for your family? Reach out for an adoption application!
