Story
Waffles is a calm, independent dog who enjoys quiet companionship. He’s a bit aloof and prefers to do his own thing but is affectionate once he feels comfortable. Waffles is easy to handle, though he’s sensitive about his paws. He walks well on a leash and knows basic cues like `sit` and `paw.` While not overly playful or interested in toys at this time, he’s content to just be near you. He even tested well with other dogs! Waffles would do best in an adult only home. He’s a loyal companion for someone seeking a low-key dog.If you are interested in learning more contact our placement team at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter:E: Adoption@hempsteadny.govE: Foster@hempsteadny.govE: Rescue@hempsteadny.govT. 516.785.5220#adoption #adoptme #newyorkadoptables #opttoadopt #mixedbreed #lovemydog #dogsofnewyork #longislandanimalshelter #animalshelters #cutepup #puppy #dog #doggo #rescuedog #rescue #rescued #ideserveachance #ideservelove #goodpup #dogcute #doglovers #pawfection #ilovemydog #dogofNY #adorabull #dogsofinsta #instadog

Story
Rebecca (or “Beckers” to her friends) is a 7-month-old Chow Chow/Husky mix with a heart as big as her fluff. This gorgeous pup is a bit of a wallflower at first—shy and reserved—but don’t be fooled. Once she feels safe, her mischievous side comes out, and it’s full of quirky charm and playful antics. What makes Beckers special: She’s equal parts mystery and goofball—quiet one minute, zoomies the next. She's incredibly smart and observant, and she's always taking in the world around her. While still learning the ropes of being a confident pup, she’s made amazing progress with gentle socialization. Because of her breed mix and natural instincts, Rebecca would do best with a dog-savvy, patient family—preferably someone with experience in guarding or independent breeds like Chows or Huskies. She’ll thrive in a calm, structured home with no young children. Another well-balanced dog might help her continue to grow socially, but slow introductions are key. Rebecca is looking for: A quiet home with adults or older teens. Someone committed to her socialization journey—willing to go at her pace. A family who understands that trust is earned, not given—and that the reward is a fiercely loyal, loving companion. If you’re ready to earn the trust of a unique, beautiful soul and have the time and patience to help her blossom, Beckers is ready to meet you. *Reminder* We are currently facilitating adoptions through appointment only. Story
Remi is a 7-month-old Chow Chow/Husky mix with a heart as soft as her fluffy coat. She’s a gentle, loving pup who absolutely adores being close to her people—and she’s convinced your lap is the perfect place for a nap. Though she starts off a little shy, Remi’s sweetness shines through quickly. Once she feels safe, she’s all cuddles, tail wags, and soulful gazes. She’s the kind of dog who just wants to be near you, quietly soaking up your love and giving it right back. Remi would do best in a calm, caring home where she can continue to grow at her own pace—but more than anything, she’s ready to be someone’s best friend and cuddle buddy for life. *Reminder* We are currently facilitating adoptions through appointment only. Story
Meet MeimeiShelter Location: Small Dog AdoptionsMeimei is a gorgeous, stoic Chow Chow who was surrendered due to a combination of housing issues and medical concerns her former family couldn't keep up with. She's been through a lot lately-experiencing a painful UTI and losing the only home she's ever known-but she's shown us she still has the quiet dignity and resilience this breed is known for. With time, patience, and a gentle touch, Meimei will thrive again.🏡 My Ideal HomeI would do best in a quiet, adult-only home with someone who understands the independence of a Chow Chow. I'll need time to decompress, a little patience with my bathroom habits as I recover from my UTI, and respect for my space when I'm not ready for attention. Bonus points if you love a dog who loves routine, serenity, and the occasional slice of cheese.👶 Good with Kids?No young children, please. Meimei has shown some fearful behavior in new settings and needs a calm environment to feel safe.🐕 Good with Other Dogs?Meimei previously lived with a small dog and did well. While she's not super playful, she's polite around familiar dogs. Slow intros are key.🦮 Leash MannersExcellent! Volunteers say she walks so politely on leash that you might forget she's there-until someone stops to comment on how stunning she is.🩺 Overall HealthMeimei is recovering from a confirmed urinary tract infection, which is being treated with antibiotics. She is underweight and her spay surgery will be scheduled once she is medically cleared.🧠 Behavior Determination: Level 3 - OtherMeimei is reserved, sensitive to noise and fast movements, and may resource guard food or toys. She accepts affection on her own terms and responds best to calm, positive reinforcement. House training is in progress-recent accidents appear tied to her UTI.🎉 One Fun FactMeimei keeps her crate spotless-even in the shelter! She's a neat girl with old-school manners.💵 Adoption Fee: waivedMeimei is looking for a second chance and a safe place to heal. If you think you can offer her that, visit nycacc.org/adopt to learn more.A volunteer wrote: Meimei is so easy to walk you might forget you were alone if people didn't keep stopping to exclaim about this Chow's beauty. She's so well behaved! She walks with a loose leash, keeps her pop up crate immaculate, and didn't care a bit about passing dogs. Her former owner (she lived with kids and a small dog) describes her as friendly and outgoing to all, and we agree. Meimei is in need of a soft place to land!
