Guthrie appears to have taken an oath to protect his home from all squirrels, both foreign (the black ones) and domestic! He will bark an enthusiastic warning if they are anywhere around - they will not invade as long as he is on the job! Little Guthrie was caught on the streets of Youngstown by some good Samaritans and taken to the pound. An obvious case of severe neglect, he was so deeply matted that he had to be anesthetized so he could be shaved down. His teeth were rotten and after a much needed dental, he was able to keep five of them. No worries, though. He eats kibble JUST fine, thank you very much! The main foible we have encountered with him is that we suspect he was owned by someone who was unable to take care of him and take him outside regularly to potty. It appears that he was made to wear a belly band all the time, so he will thoroughly wet one if left on him for more than an hour or so. He simply thinks that’s what he’s supposed to do. He also has a tendency to mark his territory, though that has decreased the longer he has been in his foster home. Though he gets along well with the other dogs there, a forever home without other canines might eliminate that behavior. We are working on these issues, as we know it’s a hindrance to his finding the forever home he deserves. We tried crating him when he first got here, but he would rub his nose raw against the metal bars trying to get out. We have recently begun getting him used to a soft-sided crate. If he can acclimate to being in there when his foster mom is away, it could be just the solution he needs. He’s never once had the other kind of accident in the house, btw - just the wetting kind. Other than that, Guthrie’s a sweet guy with just the right mix of spunkiness and taking long naps on the couch next to his human. In fact, the only things he needs to make him perfectly happy are a comfy couch to doze on, a person to cuddle next to, and good eats! As mentioned, he gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home, but would be very content to have his humans all to himself. And besides all that, he’s just so gosh darned cute! Does this little guy sound like someone you could open your heart and home to? You can easily fill out an adoption application by clicking here: adoption application.
