Story
For inquiries email susannah@compactcaninerescue.org Fee: $800 Location: Norfolk, VA Meet Dixie! Dixie is a dachshund - yorkshire terrier mix. She is about 1-2 years old. She weighs 7 pounds but should probably weigh closer to 12 or 14 pounds. She is extremely emaciated. Dixie came to the Norfolk animal shelter as an owner surrender. She has been severely neglected. Despite her situation she remains friendly. Her main focus at the moment though is eating. She is being fed 4-6 times per day to slowly reintroduce her to food. She gobbles anything you put in front of her. We have to take is slow to allow her system to re-adjust to eating again. Dixie has been reluctant to put on a harness but once it is on, she walks on leash to go potty outside beautifully. Dixie will be spayed Monday, June 15th then be ready for adoption she will need to continue small meals several times a day until a healthy weight is achieved. She is a good eater and will happily gobble down food! She uses a slow feeder bowl to help her with each feeding. Overall, her health is good and we will continue to feed her and get her ready for adoption. We will post more photos soon. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.OSKAR Breed: smooth dachshund Age: 8 years Weight: 15 pounds Adoption Fee: $375 Vetting Status: neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccines, dewormed, heartworm negative and maintained on preventatives, recent dental ~~~~~ OSKAR is a sweet & sassy wiener who is looking to settle into a furever home.   He is a professional snuggler & loves most humans, just no small ones please!   Oskar's hobbies include sleeping under covers, sunning himself on the deck, watching TV & batting his BBE's (big brown eyes) at you for any snacks you may want to share?   Canine minions are cool and chilln' with his foster fur-brother is fun. However, very large dogs or hyper-happy alpha types who want to be all up in his face are not Oskar's cup of tea.  Oskar did have some injuries from his prior life when he came to rescue, but has fully recovered & ready to go home. His canine dentist (ok, vet) also says his teeth are in great shape.    He is housetrained and leash trained, loves to go on walks, & ride in the car.   Oskar is okay with crates, but much prefers hanging around the house & would LOVE to snuggle with you in the "big bed" at night if allowed.    Oskar would be suited to apartment living provided you agree to carrying HRH (his royal hound-ness) up & down any stairs, as all nobility should be!     P.S. If you think OSKAR is the dog for you, please fill out an adoption application today! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  OSKAR  is available for adoption through K-9 Rescue of the  Eastern Shore.   An adoption process is required to include filling out an online adoption application available at the following link --  https://www.k9rescuees.org/info/adoption  ` Veterinary and personal reference checks, and a home visit/meet-n-greet are required PRIOR to being approved to adopt.   The time frame for completing this process depends largely on how quickly references respond, your vet office is able to speak to us (some want written permission first), your landlord or HOA (if applicable) confirms their approval for a pet, & how your schedule aligns with that of our volunteer(s) for the Home Visit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PLEASE NOTE ~ All of our rescue members are volunteers with many obligations. While we may not be capable of immediate response, we will respond to all inquiries and application submissions as soon as possible. Thank you for thinking adoption! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #dachshundsofinstagram, #adoptme, #brokennomore, #sausagedogVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 13, 2026, 12:04 am

Story
Meet Skipper! This rowdy fella came to us when his owners health declined and they could no longer care for him. Skipper was well loved by his family and came to the VBSPCA at no fault of his own. Skipper would do best as an only dog as he is a bit unsure about the company of other dogs. This is something that could be worked on with a trainer to help build his confidence and help him to learn proper play and interactions with other dogs. He has never lived with children so we will require kids 10 and up in his future home. Skipper loves people and loves to cuddle and give kisses. If you would like to meet Skipper please speak with our kennel team who would happy to help you meet him.

Chicken**8 Year old Long Haired Dachshund**18.5 POUNDS**COURTESY LISTING** Chicken is being fostered in the Richmond, VA area. If you are interested in both Chicken and her companion, Fiona, please contact Jaime Morrison at jaimesmorrisonn@gmail.com or 7168125700. From a friend of the dogs: Bonded Pair Needing a Loving home Meet Fiona and Phoebe - affectionately known as Chicken. These two sweet girls are looking for a forever home together after the unexpected passing of their beloved owner. Chicken is an 8-year-old mini long-haired Dachshund with a heart full of love. She is a total snuggle bug who adores being close to her people. Though she is deaf, and mostly blind, she gets around beautifully and doesn't let it slow her down. Chicken is curious, spunky, and gets along wonderfully with other dogs, children, and everyone she meets. Fiona and Chicken have spent their entire lives side by side, and their bond is unbreakable. They are seeking a loving home where they can stay together, ideally with a fenced-in yard and experienced dog owners who will give them the care and stability they deserve. Could you be the one to give this devoted pair their next chapter filled with love, comfort, and adventure? Fiona is also listed under the MOMSVA shelter on this website. Both Chicken and Fiona are UTD on shots/vaccines, spayed, and fully vetted. If you are interested in both Chicken and her companion, Fiona, please contact Jaime Morrison at jaimesmorrisonn@gmail.com or 7168125700. **COURTESY LISTING**

Story
PLEASE READ THE POST Meet Grapefruit !! This sweet girl is trying so hard to embrace her new life!! She’s been through a lot but still wants to love. She is one of the now 23 dogs we have taken in from a horrible hoarding situation. She survived being in a feces covered home during freezing temps with no heat, no water, and no electricity for a very long time. These poor dogs didn’t even know what a ceiling fan or TV were. She’s made a lot of progress so far and is overcoming her fears. Grapefruit is approx. 4 years old. She is a Chihuahua mix best guess. She weighs 12 Pounds and is full grown. She will be spayed, up to date on vaccines and microchipped as part of her adoption. She is heartworm negative and on monthly preventions. She takes some time to trust you but then she is a clingy Velcro dog. She gets upset when you leave her and thinks she should get to hang out with you 24/7. She is learning to give people space but if you want a dog that is glued to you then she is the one. Grapefruit becomes comfortable with women faster than men. She will bark and run from men for a while and then she accepts them. It’s a slow process of building trust with a dog that’s been neglected like this. Things like noises outside and the TV can scare her still. She has done well with other dogs after she sees they are safe. She is not fostered with cats so we do not know how she will do but we suspect she would do fine. She’s seen indoor bunnies at her foster home and doesn’t seem to have a high prey drive at all. She is not fostered with kids but we think she would do well with calmer older kids. She will need kids and adults in the home to be willing to give her space and time to adjust to them and feel safe. As with any dog she would need any children in the house to be respectful and not treat her like a toy. Grapefruit had clearly never been on a leash before and was terrified of it at first. She has gotten so much better about it. She walks very well without pulling. She still gets scared of things at times that can make her try to run away so a secure harness or collar is needed. She has done very well on car rides and does not get sick. She hates being away from her people and really struggled with crate training at first. With consistency and firm verbal corrections she has really started to accept it now. She will sometimes bark when put in but then will stop within a few mins and go to sleep. She came from a place where they were trapped inside and had no options for going potty anywhere else. It is taking time to correct that learned behavior but she is starting to figure it out. She does best at going potty outside when there are not as many scary sounds. Things like lawnmowers, trucks etc. can startle her and she won’t go potty. Early morning and late evening when it’s quiet she is doing so well at going outside. The more she builds her confidence outside the more we see her potty out there. She is slowly figuring things out but her new owner will just need to be patient and understanding given her history. Grapefruit had to fight for limited food in her last home and due to this she is allowed to eat separately here. Dogs coming from horrific situations like this may have lasting issues sharing food with other dogs. She is fine with people around her food. She may end up able to eat around other dogs but she may not. It is easy enough to feed her in her crate to allow her to feel safe and secure after what she has been through. She takes treats very gently from people and has not shown us she will be aggressive over food but she does eat very fast. She has a low energy level so far. We do expect when she is more comfortable that her energy level will increase. She seems like she will turn out to be a very fun dog once all the fear is gone. Grapefruit has a lot of potential and we expect her to turn in to an excellent companion. If you are willing to help her learn the rest of her training and give her some time to trust you then you will end up with a great addition to your family. ***Do not apply to adopt one of these hoarding case dogs if you’re not serious about giving them time to adjust. It’s absolutely unfair to expect them to adjust in a day or two. We’ve had 3 adopted and returned within 24 hours of adoption for not being immediately settled and perfect in a completely new place. All returned for things we explained upfront about them. It’s completely unreasonable and unrealistic to expect that from dogs that have been through what they have. The last thing they need is to be shuffled around due to adopters not listening or being serious about their needs*** Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA. (She will need to be adopted within a 1 hour drive radius) ‼️Please message us directly at VillageDogResource@gmail.com with questions or to get an application.
