Story
Lucas came to us with mom and siblings. When he was about 8 weeks old, we noticed some funny behavior where he was walking into walls and acting very lethargic. Without surgery, Lucas would not have lived past his second birthday. With surgery, he would have a normal life with the exception of a daily dose of omeprazole (over-the-counter heartburn treatment). In January of 2022, the surgery was performed at Texas A&M University and was a complete success. He has received a clean bill of health at every check-up since and, in fact, the veterinarians say he could benefit from losing a few pounds! Lucas is now 3 years old and is the happiest boy he can be. He attends regular training sessions and is very comfortable in public settings. He walks on the leash without pulling, sits on command, and has no problems meeting other dogs or strangers. Lucas absolutely loves playing with other dogs and knows to respect their boundaries. From what we have seen, he has no issues with cats, but (as anyone will tell you) that depends more on the cat than the dog! Lucas is neutered, microchipped, and (as mentioned) has no other medical issues except for his daily medicine. Lucas eats about 2.5 cups of food per day. This may need to be adjusted up or down now that he is considered an adult dog. Lucas definitely had an interesting start to his life and now he deserves a chance for a forever home! Please review our adoption page at https://www.thechickwithpits.org/adoptions for the full details about the adoption process.

Story
Delta came to our organization by way of someone who thought it was a good idea to dump her in the field next to us with a box of food and a bowl of water (see last photo). We spotted her frantically running up and down the field, in and out of traffic, and without a clue of what she did to deserve this. It took DAYS for us to catch her. We almost got her into the car on day 2, we almost lassoed her a couple of times on day 3, and our landscaper almost caught her on day 4. By day 5, we almost herded her into one of our outdoor kennels, but she just refused to go in. Day 6 was the day - we left our backyard gate open and were able to get her in an enclosed space. In the middle of the night, we rigged up a small pen in the corner and eventually got her leashed... and that's when the fun started! Delta took a while to open up and we took her to the vet once she did. She was not chipped and no one had responded to any of our ads, so we went to work. Delta received all her vaccinations, a microchip, and a spay. She received a clean bill of health and has been working with Boss Babe dog training for a few weeks now. She enjoys walking on the leash, loves playing with the other pups, and doesn't have any issues with strangers, kids, or cats. She is fully housetrained and comfortable in a kennel if need be. Delta is both fosterable and adoptable - let's make home 2.0 much better than whatever home 1.0 was!

Story
Pickles came to us by way of the Fort Worth Animal Shelter. We came across her post by the good folks who work at the shelter and we couldn't say no - despite her condition, she just looked so happy-go-lucky. We could tell she needed some work though because she was underweight, her legs were in bad shape, and we needed to see what (if anything) could be done to help her walk/get some pain relief/etc. A willing volunteer was able to pick her up and get her to us. She spent the first couple of weeks getting used to the new space and constant bandage changes to get the sores off her legs. We were able to secure a surgical consultation just to see what, if anything, could be done about her walking. Unfortunately, the only procedure that could be done would have been very risky and would have only slightly reduced any pain she was experiencing. We opted not to go for the surgery and voted, instead, to treat her as best we could. With our experience with paralyzed dogs in tote, we got to work. We switched her to a raw diet, which greatly improved her bowel movements. We got her a drag-bag and wheelchair, to get her as mobile as possible (she took to it like a fish to water!). We also started her on a range of supplements/herbal treatments plus laser therapy to make sure her other muscles were up to par. After a while, we were able to get her spayed and ready for a home who can provide her the care she needs. Pickles gets along great with other dogs. She loves to run (roll) with them for hours on-end and has never shown any signs of aggression towards them. She does not seem to have any issues with cats - she tends to ignore the outdoor cats we have here at the sanctuary. She is very well-behaved in the bath and has gotten along very well with our children. She does bark when strangers come over, but we think that is because she is unable to get up and see them. When they do come over to her, she is very friendly and excited to say hello. At this point, Pickles is like any other dog, except that she does need to use the bathroom a bit more frequently than others. While she is indoors, we do have her on a waterproof pad in a pen that she can scoot around in. When she does need to go outside, she is pretty good at letting someone know - she starts to scurry around a bit and that is her sign to go outside. She has no issues with the wheelchair or the drag bag, but she tends to like the wheelchair a bit more (for obvious reasons). Pickles is fully vetted - spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. She does not have any other health issues. If you have experience with paralyzed dogs, she would be a great fit for your home! Story
At 8 weeks old, Huck found himself in a scary rural kill shelter with his sister Holland. We were able to save the duo and get them on their road to recovery. Huck was riddled with worms, sneezing, and had some skin issues. Weighing in at a whopping 6 lbs, his body was tired and working overtime. Huck is currently the middle of a puppy pile sandwich with his sister Holland and pseudo sister Harlow. He is a shy little guy with a big voice when he needs to cry. He is current on age appropriate vetting and is currently available for pre adoption.

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
On a late Sunday afternoon, a fellow animal loving family pulled up to HQ with a box full of squishy puppies. They had found the puppies nursing on their dead mother and they didn't know what else to do. These folks donated what they could and we took it from there. After stocking up on puppy formula, we set our alarm clocks for the frequent feedings and zombied our way through the first few weeks. Just like real babies, we had some "picky" ones in the bunch - this one didn't like this bottle, that one preferred this nipple, this one had issues drinking from the bottle, those two eat a bottle a piece, etc. We had just gotten through the infant phase with our own daughter and were back to enjoying our evenings and then we were back in the trenches! Times 8 this time! From what we can tell, these pups appear to be pit-mastiff mixes, but we like to focus more on personalities than breeds here at The CWP. "Sammy" and his siblings have had their struggles when it comes to meeting new people. Given their rough start to life, this is understandable. We have adopted out 6 of the 8 puppies and each one of them took a little bit longer to open up to their new surroundings. When you interact with Samurai here at the rescue, he is everything you expect in a young pup - loving, playful, and goofy. Out in public, he can be a little timid and scared. Sammy has been on many "vacations" with our trainer and after about the third trip, he was more than OK with being away from headquarters. What we are trying to say is - Samurai's adopter will need to very patient and very dedicated to his success. He is a really great pup who deserves a chance at a forever home. As long as his forever family is committed to giving him some time to acclimate, we have no doubt that he will become a part of the family. Please review our adoption page at https://www.thechickwithpits.org/adoptionsfor the full details about the adoption process. Feel free to contact us with any questions! Please keep in mind that we will NOT schedule any meet-and-greets without a completed application first.
